I've been playing Guitar for over 20 years, never learning how to read music or any theory and I have to say your approach is by far the best and easiest to understand. For a long time I could solo over the whole fret board but never understood why certain riffs worked over some chords but not others, even when I was in the "correct" key. Thank you so much for clarifying this for me and bring the joy back to playing!

19:20 - Yes, it's making *perfect* sense. I've chased down several of your mode videos in the last day or so, and they're super-enlightening. I feel like a new piece of the puzzle is falling into place for me. Solid gold.

Don't feel bad about people donating. You deserve it. I've seen other channels where people spend more time asking for donations than actually focusing on their content. Plus, you are genuinely teaching. I love the look on your face when you stream with your student and the student gets it. You are not showing off and making your students feel bad about themselves. You genuinely want to share the knowledge, and I love that. I've been playing guitar for around 30 years and after watching your videos and streams, I feel an even deeper connection to the instrument. Looking forward to the next video and/or stream!

I just would like to say. This was a great lesson, and also a beautiful moment. I was smiling so much from the generosity, love and thankfulness in this video. You have and are helping so many, and you truly deserve all positive you receive (not just donations). Ok sorry I got so salty lol, I'll shut up now. Thank you Ian!

I kinda figured this out on my own some time ago by comparing Dorian & Minor Pentatonic, but you give a really good explanation here Stich. It is the Keep It Simple idea for sure. Many people just seem to make the whole mode thing so complicated. Thanks for all your videos.

I'm new to your channel but am learning a lot. I think after 30 years of Pentatonic I'm ready for a few new ideas 🤔 I was listening to the Battle of John and Yoko and at the end there I heard a very cool use of the Mixolydian. Anyway I'm now a fan, subscriber and will be checking out the other videos you've done, thanks Man!!

Thanks for being so giving with all this knowledge. Its pretty amazing how easy you make learning guitar. Hopefully this question makes sense. Is there a formula for figuring out the special note for each mode or is it just memorization?
@Biteyourownteeth
@Biteyourownteeth 7 жыл бұрын
www.cyberfret.com/theory/modes/101/page7.php good question this vid is awesome bececause it explains the theory but yeah memorize Mixolydian,Aeolian ,Ionian,Dorian. Phrygian shapes in that order in the key of C major/A minor . just the regular shapes not the three notes per string shapes. and you will see how they all fit together a see the the whole fret board and how it connects, and how the mode shapes kinda live over the blues boxes campfireguitarstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/guitar-scales-modes.png its not hard just like learning the 5 blues boxes with a few more notes per box. just move the shapes up or down to change key. but yeah you need to run your scales every day all over the neck that's the gig use backing tracks they are huge helpers

Awesome awesome lesson. You talked about adding the one note most unique to the mode. But aren't there two notes we'd need to add to the pentatonic? Is that note not as special?
@DeFianTTxx

Hey Stich, so how should i identify modes? For instance in the key of A. Is the 5 mode A mixolydian? or is it E mixolydian? The first way being the key signature (A) then the Greek name of the fifth mode, or is it the starting note (E) then knowing that it's the mixolydian mode you can assume the key signature is A because you know mixolydian is the 5th mode? If I can clear this up I think it'll have a better understanding of modes

Stitch NATION! I have a question bro. Desperate. I've been playing a while but decided to really get serious. I know my pentatonics. But I just learned the Major Scale. Should I learn Dorian as a separate scale or just try to force the notes into Major Scale 2nd mode or even your survival technique seems like a survival technique. I feel like I feel it more (Big ABB fan) when I learn it as a separate scale. Ie: Liz Reed, Whipping Post to me is Dorian A, not "G Major but think A". But that is gonna add an entire new scale to learn in the 5 positions. Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope...
@douginny
@douginny 7 жыл бұрын
StichMethod Guitar Yeah, I feel Dotian better as it's own scale. But at least you saved me from having to learn the Mixolydian too. That one I can simply flat the 7th per the stitch recommendation. But after watching your Zeppelin video on Since I've Been Loving You , I am now fearing that I may have to learn the Aeolian too. Therefore, I hereby formally request a STITCH METHOD minor scale lesson...

I want to donate, how do I? I've learned a lot and I want to contribute. Can you also summarize the special note for each mode to add to each pentatonic scale. I think I got most of them but not all. This concept is beyond a major breakthrough for those of us stranded on the pentatonic plateau. I understand modes, I would just like to know each special note for each pentatonic. Thanks again for the enlightenment. JoeRye

Stich, Your efforts are as you say well worth the deciphering. But, the deciphering puts the reality that your offering to much misdirection within the effort to clarify. Set the straight path first then allow for the exceptions please. I took the opportunity to subscribe just because you have a solid understanding as demonstrating, slightly off center if I hadn't understood in advance where your going with the video.

I offer this one train of thought, I have a variety of modeling amps....including a Mustang modeling amp. As well as a few others..... My point goes to this. When trying to achieve someone else s tone I have to go to the real pedal use to for what ever the reason be able to tweak and refine more readily. Now my thought is that if you yourself find the dial up tone here. let me know. When its not a modern industrial tone. I go to pedals
@James57AOL
@James57AOL 7 жыл бұрын
I m going to ask because you made the impetus that all things relative to the Ionian scale. But you step out to the Pentatonic as the key reference to the Dorian ......For continuity of your statements and knowledge, wouldn't be better to go directly to and stay relative to the Ionian mode when stepping up or down reference. Is that how its suppose to be understood, interesting how you offer this relative mode awareness. Ionian to all major modes and Aeolian to all relative minor modes. Now that is a good position to stand on. No shaky ground there. Earlier in the video would be great from now on this topic please
