I'm a critical care RN and what Tyler said about his experience reminded me of what a patient told me after we resuscitated her when she hadda cardiac arrest. She said while we were resuscitated her she was watching us as she seemed to be floating in the room while we helped her. She lived and hadda full life after that. I'm so happy all came out with Tyler, i enjoy him so much, and have so much respect for what he does. Tyler looks great, so happy for the world he was saved.

What's the most awesome thing about this video? Chandler, you and Tyler never express anger at the snake that bit Tyler. Not once. An animal didn't feel good, had a temporary visual disability due to the shedding, got scared and reacted. You DO express understanding -- you'll prevent discomfort and accidental reactions from happening in the future, but that understanding and the love you have for animals makes YOUR reaction kindness. This video is worth watching for that lesson alone. So much kindness here.

Huge respect for what you do Chandler. Just like you mentioned the risk of having non-experts twist the story around the snake bite video, as a critical care doctor, I worry about the misinformation you guys are spreading regarding the utility of fasciotomy in snake bites. Admittedly every case is unique and I can't speak to the specific regarding your friends, but a fasciotomy is often a limb saving procedure in the context of compartment syndrome. The swelling can be so severe that it cuts off blood flow to the distal parts of your limb and the muscle begins to die. You are correct that the swelling will go down eventually, but in the case of a compartment syndrome (which is a real possibility following an envenomation), even a few hours of ischemia could result in tissue death and loss of a limb. A few scars and a hell of a story is a small price to pay to keep your arm. Be safe out there man.
@NuckChorris895 жыл бұрын
Great explanation, as an orthopaedic surgeon I totally agree. When indicated, fasciotomies are completely necessary and a limb saving procedure.
@oxBADxWOLFxo5 жыл бұрын
@PureBlue snake bite swelling does get to that level, and often. They are lucky enough to be able say that they think the did not need the procedure while keeping most of or all of the bitten limb, but had it not been done and they had lost the whole limb they would be much more upset than they are now with some scarring. Doctors do not do the procedure lightly, or when it is not needed so the fact that it was done meas an entire team of medically trained professions deemed it necessary to save that persons limb.
@oxBADxWOLFxo5 жыл бұрын
@PureBlue Okay there has been some confusion then as you previously wrote "snake points dont get to that level" meaning you were stating that no snake bites ever make a fasciotomy necessary. So yes most snake bites do not result in swelling making a fasciotomy necessary, however bites from a venomous snake that cause excessive swelling do. Also any reaction that causes too much swelling may need one, I almost required one for a reaction to an ity bity mosquito bite. And as a member of a medical team in the hospital that responds to critical care incidents in the ICU, trauma incidents in emerge, and working in the operating room I am 'using my brain'..
@brockclark43615 жыл бұрын
I immediately scrolled through the comments specifically to see if anyone had called this out, and I was glad to see that you had. As an emergency medicine resident, I was mind blown hearing them say with so much confidence that fasciotomies are unnecessary in these situations. It’s pretty asinine to suggest we “think we need to relieve the pressure” when an extremity is simply “swelled up.” If that were the case, we would be doing fasciotomies every day on people with congestive heart failure who have massive amounts of lower extremity edema. When a fasciotomy is performed, it’s because it’s likely the only thing that will prevent you from having to get the limb amputated altogether. You guys rely on us being there to save your lives when the inevitable happens and you get bit handling one of these snakes. So please don’t spread misinformation on a specific topic you clearly aren’t very educated on, seeing as one of you referred to to procedure as a “scapionomy” and the other called it a “fleshiotomy”.
@jamesgarrity35325 жыл бұрын
But doc,wouldn’t prompt administering of anti venom drastically lessen the chances of needing a drastic procedure? In 2001 I was bit by a captive raised Florida Cottonmouth,I was in the ER within 10 min. Crofab was on board within another 10 min,6 vials. They sent down the surgeon who wanted to cut right away,even though swelling was not that severe( the Crofab was beginning to do its work) I told him to let’s wait and see,the ER attending concurred. After an hour swelling was drastically reduced. A night in ICU,some pain meds and antibiotics,and went home the next day. After two weeks,my hand was fine as if nothing happened with full use to this day. Your opinion please sir.

That’s the price you pay for handling dangerous animals. These are not pets and should never be treated as such. He clearly gets an adrenaline rush out of handling them. He’s very lucky to have survived that bite. Unless you are housing venomous snakes for the purposes of providing anti venom, there is no rationale reason to be keeping or handling these animals. These animals deserve their dangerous reputations. They cannot be trusted under any circumstances. These knuckleheads are painting a very dangerous message to the public.

This is why you should always respect a snake respect it like it’s your crystal or something. When you said he is a 14.5ft beast that instantly reminded me of when you said he’s a beast on that feeding video and he gave you the death stare lol. I still respect you Kevin. He’s a king that’s why.
