Your looking at a temperature inversion. It occurs when the air near the ground is colder than the air higher up. The snowpak is cooling the air near surface and cold air is denser than warm air so it stays near the surface. Normally temperatures get colder the higher up you go in this case its warmer further up above the ground. You mentioned the air is relitvly calm which means there is no mixing between the lower and upper layers which is what is allowing this to happen. The reason your only seeing it as you look towards the sun is because of how the angle of the light is passing through colder denser air from your perspective.

The inversion's do hold any particulate matter down lower to the ground, smoke from wood stoves etc.

Could the Shiveluch ash fall also cause the orange ish colour? GeoHub on YT mentioned visible ash in Eastern Washington, and in his place in Oregon he had a 4% drop on solar panels. I think he’s probably familiar with temperature inversions.

Ice fog... the cold air suspends water vapor/ice crystals. even though its cold, the UV from the sun is still melting stuff off. that vapor , especially over the cold valley causes the fog. mountain life is pretty damn great.

Hey man. Jerry up in the Rockies in Canada. So there was a huge volcanic eruption in Russia last week and they are saying it will likely cause crazy sunsets for North America for the next few weeks. I wonder if this is what you are seeing in the sunrise??
@GT-mn3bx

Possibly. I read once where sunrise and sunsets are redder because the sun is shining through what would be 5-10 feet of compacted airborne dust.

The polar vortex is slightly disrupted and average temperatures are more likely in the Pacific Northwest Western Canada 🇨🇦 and Alaska, north central us is near average overall and minimum chance of above average, central us equal chances, and South and east us has normal weather, this won't impact the gulf.

5:08 @Matt Sutkoski got it right -- Bezymianny volcano in Russia erupted and poured a decent amount of ash and SO2 into the atmosphere and it's just following the jet stream currents to get over to this side of the Pacific. It'll result in orange-ish sunrises and sunsets for a couple weeks I imagine. Props to @Matt Sutkoski.

Shiveluch, on the Kamchatka peninsula, erupted on Tuesday April 11, 2023. The volcanic plume ascended to 65,000 ft which got into the jet stream which brought the high altitude plume almost directly from Kamchatka to California. What you’re seeing are the aerosols of sulfur dioxide suspended at that altitude which causes spectacular color effects will last for a while and be really noticeable around sunrise and especially sunset.

Wonder if your going to get hit in winter 23!? Last huge winter I can remember at Mammoth was 2012 so maybe it will be 2032 until it hits that hard again… guess we will find out soon enough. Congrats for making it through. Hopefully LA won’t steal all of the water and Mono lake will fill up some along with the aquifers and lakes basin.

That haze you saw might have been volcanic ash from the Aleutians in Alaska. A volcano recently erupted up there and that volcanic ash/haze has been reported in other areas of the western and central U.S. Not sure whether air currents brought that as aloft over Mammoth Mountain, though.

I wonder how long could snow last if you wouldn't clear it. I guess it could be mid of Jun minimum. Your wheel disk bent due to low pressure and a road bump or even rock on the road. In countries with bad roads, this is a common problem.
