Follow along with us in the race to rebuild Mammoth after a record setting winter. Projects are coming online the phones are ringing people need help rebuilding. Update on the swamped 308… we tried getting it out and made things worse now it won’t start. Hopefully we can get a wrecker over and drag it onto higher ground soon.

What a classic illustration of getting bogged down!!! Sooo sorry to see the mess. Wow.
@briane173

Heavy on the word "bogged." That's almost all forest detritus; if they wait until it dried out that rig would be there for half a year, and then it would get dry enough to become a tomb.

I'd bring in another trackhoe, & clear all those mounds away, make channels for the water to flow away from the stuck machine. You want the stuck machine will be on high ground

So I see the solution for your excavator. You have logs in the background. Grab a few of the logs lift the front end up with bucket. Put under put weight on it spin it under then grab another and do same. Again and again till your out. Been there

When you raise the tracks, try to put some logs/wood under it, maybe that will help it to gain traction.

You can't get your head around how big the Long Valley supervolcano is, nor how much tephra got blown out of that thing when it erupted. It's humbling.

Thanks for the shots of Twin Lakes. We spent over forty years in that campground and helped out at the store for several years, staying behind the store in our RV. Needless to say, we love the Mammoth area.

I remember the Winter & massive runoff in 1968-9, I was a coastal flatlander that left the south coast for the mountains that year, it was my first of 54 winters to come, living in the Sierras everywhere from Lee Vining to Lone Pine, after a winter such as '69, the village & county were strapped for labor, very short handed to handle the deluge from both the winter's snow load & then the massive late spring/ summer runoff, machines of that era were not very plentiful & very crude & unreliable by todays standards or non existent all together. A lot of hand shoveling during the winters snow & then re- directing the spring runoff around structures & downhill out & away from the village. Mammoth Lakes was a actually a village at that time with a permanent year round population of under 400. Not sure but I think Mammoth has about 2X the population of Bishop these days. Most the side streets & the few residential areas that did exist in 1969 were unpaved or light duty & quickly became washed out rushing creeks, mud bogs and swamps. Getting to where i lived in Old Mammoth could be a real task in the mud especially around the meadows, In winter cross country skis or show shoes were the best sensible mode of transport for getting to town. I can only imagine the logistical headaches these days especially on weekends with all the development, the traffic, impatient demanding & usually unprepared people. I am sure alot was gleened from this winter about building structures, placement of pipes and utilities, parking and where to put the snow that's being removed, as well as how to direct the runoff to prevent those new hazards & property damages. Definately a destination resort today, Though i left when the village population reached about 1000 residents, Did June lake which didn't change that much, but i changed as i got older and not so cold tolerant & headed for the valley below & the Southern Sierras where i been for the past 34 years. Hats off to you folks that keep the high country passible..It.s a massive task & workload, but with plenty of labor available and the modern machines used these days to make the unthinkable doable.

I was wondering if you'd use water barriers to help move the snow-water somehow use the water use barriers to direct where you want it to go, for gardens or for fighting future fires, up in Canada they are having a heck of a time fighting the fires, would be a shame to somehow take that snow-water, put it to some good use.

You need to use those logs on the side there & between the bucket arm & logs, you should be able to bring the machine UP on top of the muck, instead of THROUGH the muck...just saying.

Why not take a loader, a cable and try and pull that excavator out? Maybe some tree trunks right in front of the tracks so they can bite into those and get traction to get up and over, together with the Loader..

I wouldn't blame Owen too much. Not a lot of experience with saturated forest detritus, and the sheer amount of snow has turned it into a bog. Knowing the bedrock there is all volcanic you can get a false sense of security out there. I'm betting he got in there and just started sinking without even moving just from the weight of the rig, and any attempt to grind his way out just sunk him in deeper. I know they're impatient to get that project going but they'd have been well advised to let the snow melt off and let the detritus dry out a little before putting heavy equipment in there.

If you’s flew me out there I can guarantee I’d have that 308 out in under five minutes… it’s apparent none of you’s are operators, I could see the guy working the levers and then taking his hands off to work the travel sticks…you’ll never as you have shown, will get out of a hole unless your using the travel pedals with your feet and pulling on the sticks at the same time to get you up and out of the mud hole. You should of brought that mini over and trenched it so the soup had somewhere to go, this way you could lower the water level and not killed the engine. Love your videos, but jeez they should never rent equipment to your squad…god forbid you bought it and destroyed the engine already.
Using a 50 ton rotator to recover my CAT308 from a massive sink hole.
