These are good tips! I handle make-up purchases similarly. Such an important conversation, I think a lot of people struggle with this, one way or another. Thanks for sharing! It could also be helpful to reflect on why we want to shop during the sale. Is it fomo because we've been told it's smart to shop sales or is it due to subconsciously feeling sad about not participating in the sale like seemingly everyone else? And obviously, just because we could save money it doesn't mean we automatically have the money to pay the remaining like 70% for the products. Sometimes money is tight with annoying timing. And pause to reflect on last year's sale before filling the carts.

That’s a great point! Because I only want to shop a sale because I already wanted the items I didn’t think about FOMO being a reason. I forget about FOMO because I don’t really ever feel it, but I know friends struggle with it

I had one palette in mind to buy on black Friday, and one that was a maybe (I was waiting for a reveal). Even though there are many things I want, getting my two things, one on sale, is gratifying. I find great satisfaction in the process of considering what to buy, in many ways it's more fun than the actual purchase.

I bought nail polish from kbshimmer (fun buy) and underwear (less fun buy) and I'm trying to resist falling into the trap of other sales! Glad I can watch this content instead of haul content and get sucked into a deal.

Great video! I’ve been doing the wish list thing for awhile and it’s super helpful-as long as I actually stick to it and buy things ONLY if they’ve had a chance to sit on my list awhile. My biggest weakness this season has been the “Oh it’s a sale let me see” I am so susceptible to this. I don’t need to scroll Bloomingdale’s beauty sale offerings for fun just to see if there’s anything I might want. Shopping is not a hobby! (Except I’ve been treating it that way during the “Black Friday month” sales.) It’s okay to specifically look for things already on my list…but that’s it-no scrolling to pass the time looking for something on sale to buy. If it wasn’t already in my list, I don’t really want it. The “up to 60% off” thing this year has been crazy. I don’t remember it ever being so prevalent. I’ve seen so many of these sales this year. The things I’d want are never in that category! What they don’t know is that it aggravates me so much, I click out immediately and get nothing. It feels too much like a bait and switch scenario.

Oh yeah the bait and switch is so common. I looked at a few stores like Bloomingdale’s to see if items I already wanted were included and they never are

With makeup related purchases, I think it’s good to keep in mind that ALL MAKEUP eventually goes bad! If you’re buying from a “clean” beauty brand, the products are going to go bad faster. I bought a The Balm blush palette which is a clean brand and it went bad after 1 year. I have palettes from Tarte and Becca that are at least 6 years old and they still work but I know they will eventually be not useable. Creams in general go bad faster than powders. I know many of us enjoy connecting with influencers, but I keep in mind that many (not all) are on this platform mostly to make money by pushing affiliate codes and their collabs especially if that is their only or main source of income. It’s okay to quietly unsubscribe if watching them makes you want to shop more when you want to avoid shopping. I keep my subscriptions hidden in part so nobody sees who I subscribe to and might have unsubscribed from.

I've totally thought about this too! Makeup is a consumable, not a permanent product. When you think of these as "temporary" - the pricetag looks totally different!

Last year, I had 10 eye palettes total. I tripled my collection this year, and now... seeing the palettes I bought this year in stock and now go on Black Friday sale... is a lesson for me that it IS possible to wait for a big sale, even with indie makeup and stocking issues. I now will not believe the scarcity and pressure to buy right away So far, I've only made some smaller purchases with Black Friday sales - just a few single shadows. I see now that it's okay to lust over something for a year or even longer. Waiting for restock is okay!! It's nice to finally get something and be confident in that purchase, rather than rush and regret. I recently received the Cosmic Brushes Muse palette, which is now my all-time fave. I had waited over a year because I didn't pull the trigger the restock before this one. And it's even more enjoyable now because I really appreciate having it finally!

Aww Bean's little sweater! My wishlist is 2 or 3 years old now, and I am still patiently waiting for some items to have a good sale. There are two things I am tempted to get, but did not 100% plan for: one of this year's Ambient Lighting Edits and Milly's Clionadh collab. Clionadh seems to keep their palettes around for a long time, and I hope I can a bit later so that I can use BF sales to shop for gifts. My main budgeting techniques are being a europoor and my cat giving herself cystitis.

i’m commenting late, but we have very similar sale mindsets (although i’m still stalking that louvre palette 😅). one thing i also like to do before placing orders is compare my carts to one another so i can choose between similar product types or formulas from different brands/sites. this year i bought far less than last year or the year before 😊

I almost completed an Em Cosmetics purchase with this Black Friday sale. But honestly... I re-checked my logic and it didn't make sense for me. I would not pay the sale price at face-value for the product ($26 for a blush). This was stuff I wanted for a while because I thought would be "staples" for me (blush, cream bronzer, eyeliner), but my makeup style has changed. I recognize that I don't use blush often, I never want to contour, and I now prefer a smudgy eyeshadow liner rather than a sharp pen liner. It's so true that these sales actually happen multiple times a year. I remember struggling during Memorial Day this year! I'm struggling with the temptations now and I know that is because the holidays is a dense and stressful time of year for me at work. I really, really appreciate you posting this video. You're the only beauty influencer I follow who posted something like this. Everyone else is posting the schedule of sales and buying recommendations... I'd love to check out your friends' channels and any other KZbinrs you recommend who talk realistically like this to the regular consumer.

My staples and makeup style has changed a lot the last two years so I understand. I am glad this video was helpful. I don't like to post about sales all the time, I might do a single post with some that might be worth it but I always say only buy what you planned, wanted, and can afford. I never want to feel like I am pressuring anyone to spend. I hope you enjoy Tom and Cam's channels. I have them linked in the bio.

i try to limit myself to things I've wanted all year (or at least a month) and it's a price i would feel good about paying- since as you mentioned, brands often have multiple sales a year. NO extra items for free shipping is key for me. if I am not willing to pay the shipping with the cost then I don't want it enough at that price. the big deals i got this year were last year's viseart eyeshadow holiday palettes. the sirenuse is pretty but if i still want it next year it will be a better price. your point about not needing something as soon as it comes out if you're not a beauty reviewer is something i keep in the front of my mind

Only getting things I already wanted it key. And I’ve definitely gotten over the add an item to get free shipping mentality. The only time I will is if the item is less than the shipping which has happened weirdly.

Speaking of not overspending, I wanted to mention Cosmic Brushes relatively new palette- undergrowth. I have ND's Yucca palette but undergrowth is calling my name, it's like Hautemess Tom says, one is usually attracted to similiar makeup to what they already have- but as a fellow yellow olive- I wanted to mention it to you. I have never tried the brand, but have seen good reviews. Happy Black Friday!

I'm zeroing in on Nomad's Cyber Monday sale because I really want the last two releases. Otherwise, I picked up a few things I truly need (bedding, work clothes, new sofa, couple of holiday gifts) and am done. The sales have been truly tempting, but 2025, starting now, is about paring down for me.
