Couple of things to consider: - Treat each Point of Interest on the map as a giant warning sign. Police & gas stations are heavily populated with zombies. - a panicked player will usually do something stupid. If you can, consider your options. - Never forget to remove broken glass, never forget if you have something cooking in the oven, consider when to leave your car running, those sort of things. - contrary to going up against humans, I personally find it better to not skirt around corners tightly but leaving a bit of space going around them. Zombies lurking directly behind a corner won't be able to surprise you this way. Group your goals into shortterm, midterm, and longterm. This way you can focus on the most pressing matters first and mark other things on the map for later. Shortterm: - find a melee weapon. Anything at first, later something that you're comfortable with. Blades can now be dull, and many things can break fast so that's a thing to keep in mind. - Find a bottle. Any bottle, and once empty you can fill it with water to drink. - Find something to eat. Can and bottleopeners (I assume that the latter is necessary at least) will open those cans for you. - a bag or backpack. You can craft a simple one out of sheets but it should be upgraded asap. - a flashlight, a pen/cil and a digital watch - find a safehouse at the edge of town, or out of town, preferably something gated with two stories (sleep on the upper floor). Close the curtains so zombies can't peek inside and won't be attracted by light. - A car can be a lucky find early, especially with a key and gas. Otherwise you'll need gas, a hose (to siphon gas), electrician 1 & mechanic 2 to hotwire one. - a magazine how to craft molotov cocktails (another new gate to keep players from surviving, especially the helicopter event) - A hammer, a saw, nails, a screwdriver, and an axe. The latter is to chop down trees which can be sawed into logs which can then barricade your windows with. Good early game fortification. The others are the trifecta of things you always want in your backpack when you need to dismantle something, like a door. - a small amount of medical equip - painkillers, betablockers, antibiotics, some bandages, desinfectant. If you fear a deep wound, a surture needle and a holder. If you run anything that messes with sleep, sleeping pills. I personally keep a selection of those in the side of a car so I have quick access to them when I'm on the road as well. Midterm: - a working car. A lugwrench, car jack & tirepump. - a safe place to stay. - the Emergency Broadcast Frequency for radios. You can pick up radios with the pick up function top left side of the UI. It will update you with events and weather forecasts every hour. If you find it early enough it will also warn you the day the helicopter event will start (Air activity detected) and when the power is about to go out (Power fluctuations detected). - a plan how to survive - farming, trapping, fishing. - Books and magazines to learn and level skills. - if you haven't already, an axe or a crowbar are fantastic for opening locked (garage) doors. Longterm - Setting up a farm - Setting up a method for high calory food (Trapping, Fishing, Hunting) - Two generators and a magazine how to hook them up (1 for your home, 1 to throw into a car trunk to hook up gas stations) - Equipment and skills to shore up your house defenses, farm, and repair equipment and cars (Welding mask, welder, some fuel for the welder to be able to learn metalworking). - depending on when you start, winter gear. - sledgehammer for house renovations and opening up any locked up areas. - Guns can be useful clearing out big piles of zombies. But: They require a lot of levelling investment in vanilla, and even more ammo because the large soundradius will attrack much more zombies than you expect. Depending on location, several hundred rounds / shells and betablockers should be brought. By @jackochainsaw - ancient stoves for providing warmth indoors during winter. They double as ovens, too, which makes them very useful to have. - a 2nd safehouse with a car, gas, some supplies and water. Can be useful when you're away from home on a run, or your first base gets overrun for whatever reason.
@evankim240619 күн бұрын
One quick thing to note about the "molotov cocktail magazine", is the fact that you can't craft it even if you had one. (And I'm pretty sure there isn't even a magazine for that.) Currently there is no recipe for it in the crafting menu, but I do believe the devs will add it back eventually. For now, if you really want to use fire to deal with the zombies, you'll have to find three stones and make a campfire. Alternatively, you could pick the "Engineer" profession and get some gas to make a "firebomb".
@jackochainsaw19 күн бұрын
Not a bad list. With regards to gas stations, I do two things. 1. Put up metal racking right near the pumps (you can keep full gas cans and those you find on the way around, electronics and a screwdriver to repair the generator, you can also keep spare charged batteries and a battery charger here for your vehicles). 2. Put a permanent generator at the gas pump. I tend to put it right in the middle of the pumps under a roof (if they have one). For the winter, great idea to get a wood burning stove as it not only cooks your food and disinfects tainted water but warms the room up too. In addition, you don't need gas to fuel it and it provides a source of light. Pro tip, use zombie socks and matches to light it. Eventually lighters will run out of fuel, but matches last longer. The last thing I'd suggest is a secondary base. If your primary one gets overrun for any reason, or you are simply too far away, a secondary base can be useful to shore up until you can get back. Leave a few working cars, food, and gas there.

@@jackochainsaw big agree on back-up bases/ FOBs (forward operating base). To me this is just a zoomed-out aspect of always having an escape plan. If I come across a good candidate in a given neighborhood (doors and windows in tact, edge of the area, second floor, fencing, or otherwise easily defensible…), I’ll sometimes cut that first day of looting short and fortify + throw a few planks up on the windows. If the main base doesn’t need attention for a few days (see: generator), it can save a lot of time and risk to just shack up somewhere temporarily while dealing w an area. When finished, head home w the best loot. Leave what you don’t need behind, and come back for when/if needed. If things go sour somewhere else, retreat to whichever FOB best suits the given emergency. Even early game it’s a good idea to know what your options for even just safe houses to run through and lose a horde are. This is why I unlock all doors to any house I enter. Never know when you might need to get back in in a hurry…

@@jackochainsaw Good call. Those antique stoves are great for heat and useful as oven at the same time. Usually not using a 2nd safehouse myself as I don't tend to stay in one place for too long before returning and also mostly playing without respawn so places stay empty (and mostly because crops and freezers being on a timer in 41) but I can see the appeal. I feel you when i first started i couldn't get past the first day but here some quick tips: -save your stamina you dont need to run when escaping zombies you walk faster than them. -Do not take unnecessary fights if you can sneak past them do it but if you HAVE to fight do not take them on all at once sneak and wisper at the horde that way you can fight them one zombie at a time. -Find skill books asap as those provide an xp boost of x3. -find a generator which usually spawn in warehouses and sometimes in garages. -towards the end of your first week i would advise to baricade your house and STAY INSIDE for a few days until the helicopter event passes by as it will attract hundreds of zombies to your area and if the heli sees you it will follow you and keep attracting zombies to you until you get overwhelmed.

Can you please explain what are you talking about? You can't see the shows and read the books in week 1? Why not?
@minksmithsonian19 күн бұрын
@@luciusbright generally speaking, you want to read the books before watching the shows. The XP multiplier can be massive. However, in the first 9 days while Life & Living is still on the air it’s unlikely to find the level 1 books you’d want w/o specifically prioritizing a book store or school. If I were to find, say, Cooking 1 in the early days, and my affairs are generally in order, I’ll spare a half day to read it. If I don’t find the book, I’ll still tune in anyway. So unless you have something important to do just to make it to the next day, Life & Living is generally worth watching while it’s on the air in those first days, book or no book, especially carpentry. But later in the game, whenever you find VHS tapes for skills, you should always wait to watch them until you’ve read the book that corresponds to the your level.

For the key naming convention: Probably doesn't matter on a short vid/playthorugh, but there are a couple different towns that start with 'R' (Rosewood, Riverside) - The convention might work better 2 letters. Great video. Couple points, if you check the sandbox settings for Apoc settings. You'll see that Zeds are mostly set to Random now , this is why the Zeds act differently (as well as the new stealth). Also with spawn areas. There is a setting to clear spawn room / house / area. As default, it's house and area. Disabled this, and you'll see the true population values for the area. Boiling water is still bugged as of patch .2 and the only option to disinfect is alcohol, you can check the options by clicking the two arrows in the crafting menu. This is also how you select what to use (like using rags over rope for walls). But another good beginner's video 👍🏼

I would’ve grabbed all of those red cups- plus any other vessel that can hold water- and brought them back to base and fill them w water. For anyone new reading this: The water will turn off at any point in the first 28 days. In a residential area, you’ll be able to pull from the pipes in surrounding homes, but it can be a pain and of course can be dangerous to have to keep going into homes. Having a store of water built up at base is suuuuper helpful. The run you forget to do this, will be the run it turns off on Day 2 lol

I was doing this too. Fill up all the pots and pans. If they have stuff in them and it has gone off, empty out then fill them with water. I know its a "water station" then.

Esp when looting this close to base, at the outset I’m a total loot goblin when not working against a clock or towards an esp crucial goal. Just cross the street and drop it all off. Muscle strain still needs quite a lot of work to balance it out. I am glad you are able to turn it off for these who likes more combat and less stealth.
@skoovee19 күн бұрын
i think muscle strain is fairly balanced for how apocolypse is "meant to be played" but people turning it off and reducing it is fair, especially if you are used to pre b42 combat balance

Gymnast is VERY good. That nimble xp boost is huge. Also just starting at lvl 1 is nice. Often I can get lvl 3 in about a month. It might not be something for the short term, but high nimble is very good and nice for the long run. It really makes a difference after a few months or even a year in...

"Echo Creek doesn't have as many useful locations.." that are shown on that map! Without giving anything away beyond that I'd say go explore the area up there 😁. I don't recall if this was in B41 and I just now noticed or if it's new for B42 but for the Smoker trait you can light a cigarette at the like from an oven that's turned on or when in a car, because they used to have cigarette lighters in them in the 90s as standard! One thing I would recommend for new new players that are struggling is always the Custom Sandbox options, there are some really handy individual options in there but it's a lot of data and options to sift through so not for the faint-hearted. Things like Multi-Hit and Starter Kit can be handy ones (I forget if the melee / ranged highlighting is in the sandbox or regular game options but those can help too), even turning down / off the muscle strain if necessary, beyond that there's some handy default option sets to choose from too like Initial Survivor which really lowers the number of zomboids to start with and the max population among other handy things if I remember right. Great series, Mr Duck, the one thing PZ never seems to do is run out of new and sometimes completely random and unexpected things we can all learn! 😁

Build 42 has changed so much and while some things have gotten easier, the game mostly got a lot harder now with more aggressive zombies and high priority areas being a lot more packed ith zeds.

An important thing to consider that took me about 150 hours to realize. Being over-encumbered, even very slightly may not seem like a big deal, but it has killed my 2 month old character before as I was a little bit over my capacity while looting for a while, not realizing it constantly drains a certain amount of your "fatigue" and prevents passive regen while walking. I was fine until I suddenly became fatigued while walking away from zombies until it slowed me down so much I got caught by a horde. I am amazed I even lived that long constantly moving around like that.

Doghouses were absolutely lootable in B41 and sometimes had suprisingly useful things like guns and ammo, but that was obviously nerfed and now you find things that make sense, pillows, toys and water bowls

I had a game where I chose the smoker perk. I found a pack of ciggies and no lighter, but when I walked next to a oven (which I turned on) it let me smoke a cig. Which makes sense, but it seems like they added that in with the new patch. Pretty cool!

Do I want to see more videos about build 42? ABSOLUTELY! Ever since the release, I've been living and breathing zomboid. I came back after playing about 800hrs of 41 and I have to refactor the way I do things due to the muscle fatigue thing.

Projext Zomboid is one of my top 2 favorite zombie survival games. Its tied with State Of Decay 2, but its begining to to take the number 1 position. With the unstable build 42 ive been playing, if thays just the prelude to what the full release of build 42 is gonna be, project zomboid will be my number 1 favorite zombie survival game I have over 1000 houra in project zomboid, and i love it so much. Builf 42 is so much harder than build 41, with the adition of random runners, OMG! If you've never encountered a geoup of runners, you're dead, well oerhaps not but it is very very difficult to get away let aline fight them. If you see a small group of maybe 3 or 4, or a spread out group, you still need to really weigh the odds, unlike in build 41 id the was a large group, you could just walk backwards and the zomboids would just line up in a nice straight line comming after you and it was very easy to take them all out. Now, in build 42, the zomboids DO NOT form a straight line their path pattern is random, and you can get overwelmed quickly.

During my first B42 playthrough i started in Riverside, precisely due to the new systems (combat, muscle strain and stealth) but i realized that sometimes, after hitting zeds, sometimes zeds would turn around, as if one every few hits was louder (without a sond queue, though), so i went to Retanaru as one of the most reliable sources of information for making Project Zomboid a nerd's dream and indeed, he also found out that at random times, some blows are louder than the rest, close to screaming (Q) and as such, it snowballs zeds, causing an endless wave of those guys. No idea if it's on purpose or a bug, but already reported on Steam forum, it kinda defeats stealth and/or combat changes. The video is called Build 42 Combat Changes Explained - Project Zomboid, should check it out ;)

I believe the grunts and huffs are tied to fatigue (or at least meant to be). Fitter characters experience this less 👍🏼
@carlosalbertohernandezojed829015 күн бұрын
@ninjacoom2310 Huh, never thought about it, but this means that starting out you attract more zeds? Also if so, the sound queue should be clearer, but I'll watch out for this

@carlosalbertohernandezojed8290 I only really noticed the character noises when already fatigued. Occasionally, when missing a swing. Could be a coincidence. But if not, adds immersion.

I've played the game for 1139 hours in total in b41, very good experience, but i only played the ''get tf out of the city'' scenario, this time around my first serious playthrough in b42 is one of my best so far, right now my character is a smart, average welder that watched the news a bit, found them sad, and prioritised taking care of chickens instead. I tried taking everything slowly since muscle strain is a real thing and skills seem faster to learn(or atleast not such a pain anymore). Now im trying to find a blowtorch to expand my backyard to be safer and to be able to take care of 2 pigs aswell. Its almost day 20 and i haven't explored all of muldraugh, im having such a blast, i haven't been so excited about pz in sooo long, the devs are absolutely cooking. update: i died trying to find that darn blowtorch

One thing I have noticed with build 42 so far, is things can be too dark. In my current playthrough for example, it was 1pm in game, the room I was in had it's curtains shut and the light off, so I of course expected it to be somewhat dark, but it was actually pitch black, literally couldn't see anything at all other than the red dot that light switches have when they're off now.

I wish they kept it where you could get XP from dismantling things. At least keep it for the first couple levels of that skill.
@sora319 күн бұрын
You can. In the Sandbox settings, there is an option to allow XP from dismantling. Currently, it's set to 0 which means it's off. You can set this to 10 which is what Build 41 had.
@zwenkwiel81619 күн бұрын
So how do you get xp now? I never liked the disassembling thing cuz if you run a server players will slowly disassemble everything and would even disassemble important loot containers..
@sora318 күн бұрын
@@zwenkwiel816 through building ironically. I think the devs made it intentional that you should watch the Woodcraft shows first to get started then go out and get the building.

When it was first introduced, I hated muscle strain. But after giving it some time, I've grown to like it. I do think it's a bit too strong right now so I usually bump it down to 0.5/0.6 in the sandbox settings. But that mechanic alone has changed the way I approach combat now. Same with the new aiming mechanic. This game (when it's fully developed in 20 years time) will be INSANE.

There is a chance for zombies to spawn in your starter house. I had a 2 story + basement in Muldraugh once. I searched the master bedroom and found a woman's ID in the night stand. I went to the basement and there I met the zombie of my late-wife. Great way to start the apocalypse.
