Fun tip I've been fiddling with lately - carry a pencil and piece of paper around with you as you loot. Use it to mark off the skill book volumes you've found to keep organized, I've been doing this: "CARP: 1 2 _ 4 5" on one line, means I just need Carpentry 3, then on the next line "COOK: 1 _ _ 4 _" cause I have books 1 and 4 and need the others. As I find them, I tuck them in my bag, pause, and go change the underscores to the ones I just found. It's a pretty solid system. Also you can remind yourself of the tools you have/need to do a project or whatever else, all for 0.1 encumbrance in a fanny pack.

Now that the game has diaries, I use those instead! It has more encumbrance, but it's worth it (for me) for the roleplay aspect.

If you're on Build 42 keep in mind that it's an unstable build. If you want a more stable and balanced game you should try Build 41, although I will say that Build 42 is so much more immersive.

Although the only thing to be concerned about for new players is that it’s the same world, so time will keep ticking, meaning the water/elic shutoff may happen before you’ve gotten your feet on the ground. Bc of this I like to restart the world each character, or set the shutoff to come later than usual.

Just picked up this game. Spent almost two weeks learning on my own, and man the learning curve is definitely high. Found you on my feed and i think I know enough about the game to effectively use your information. Just made it a few days past the helicopter event on my own, and man it was tough. Had two working cars, was on the hunt for cigs, then my gf came in and distracted me during a loot run and i got hit from behind. Not even mad, now im ready to really go after it

You should note that building barricades on the outside also attracts zombies because it’s a player made construction and they gravitate towards those. If you barricade the inside of the window, zombies are not attracted to the barricades.

For me the perfect zomboid "advice" trifecta is Duck being so correct it's clear he almost wants to go into the math of it all, Lime being extremely sensible but burning his food on day one. And Nurse having a near panic attack when realising build 42 made her punch zombies while holding a mouse. It's all very informative, not equally advisable.

As a returning player, this build 42 brings a lot of freshness to this incredible game. First run yesterday: good looting, found a decent car, dead for a bite on the neck from a Z placed right on top of the stairs of a building (no escape situation). @ that would be ideal. It’s literally the only part I dislike about 42. Didn’t like muscle fatigue at first, but now I love it; it forces you to think about every fight, every task. It’s genius.

@@MrAtomicDuck I don't understand why you want to keep all those keys? Do you really need keys for two dozen random houses? Especially if you've already unlocked the doors. I usually just dump the key at that point into a bookshelf or something inside the house. Even on multiplayer where locking things might actually matter, you probably don't need too many lockable doors to dismantle and take back to your base unless playing on a PvP server.

@@FengShuiDandy It's mostly just a "well now I have to worry about organizing keys along with all the other crap in my base" sort of deal. Like, if the keys had a weight before and it was always that way then I'd understand but I don't see this as necessary. Maybe they should add a toggle option for it and have it on by default if they really wanted. I know there's a mod to remove it but having options in game by default is always better imo.

@@FengShuiDandy I just asked the same thing. Seems absolutely pointless to hoard keys and on top of that, rename them and also clutter the map with the key names?? What is the reason for that? Once a house has been looted, and eventually you have added useful notes on the map (books here, food here, etc) what's the point? The only key I can see a reason to keep is the one to your own safehouse, as some zombies can open doors and it's better to lock behind when you are in.

I think it's worth noting that tv shows seem to currently be capped at only getting you to level 3, too, so it's even less of a priority to catch them all. Just a tip to those who (like me) can get really obsessive about trying to catch them all in those first few weeks -- now you're freed up to spend that time looting and exploring and just catching them when it's convenient.

Downloaded project zomboid quite a while ago but never got into it. Been mucking about in 7days instead. @bagibe I've struggling a bit with the controls as I'm not entirely used to the top down approach. His videos make it look quite fluid but I always feel like I'm janky as heck. Haven't sat down to a proper playthrough yet just jumped in to practice the mechanics. Mostly just find the first weapon and mash Q to shout then see how long I can last. I think I'll try this weekend to sink a few hours in and see if I can actually survive more than a few days, though I'm worried my loot goblin mentality will be the death of me

You can apply 4 barricades to a window now instead of just 3, and the 4th one is the one that will over the window so you cant see out of it.

I just started playing this week. I've noticed that If you hover over the keys it should highlight the doors it goes for. But catorizing where they are on a map is pretty handy as well.

Sheets can be hanged on the outside of windows. I don't know if this is new to B42 because I found it by mistake but if it is then that might be the buggy reason you got the option twice. Some walls are acting funny in B42 so it's quite possible the reason you got it on that window and not the broken one is that the engine wasn't sure if you were clicking on the inside or outside. Also, you should have kept that backpack and pointed out that it can be filled in your off-hand while using a 1-handed weapon, and goes straight into your inventory with the full weight reduction (except for it being equipped) when you equip a 2-handed weapon. It's always a good idea to carry one around to squeeze that little bet extra loot in but it's great to keep a few of them in the back of your car and fill them to minimise your time going back and forth between the boot and the loot.

A tip that you haven't said and is really useful since it came up in your day 1 i think is always to be in combat stance when opening doors because there is sometimes zombie on the otherside of the door and could get a jump on you

About guns.. Guns are NOT a death trap. Even at low levels guns can be used to group and lure zombies out of a populated area removing MOST of the danger and time it takes to loot crowded locations.. Especially since yelling has been significantly nerfed . Learning to herd zombies makes this game very easy.

I tried to make the rosewood fire department my safehouse for my first b42 play, but I ran out of food and I didn't have a reliable vehicle. I had to wander further into the suburbs to eat. Now I have a crappy safehouse in the middle of the school and it's dark af in there, I'd have to move all the shi I have back to the fire department.

A note on removing broken glass - I don't believe it needs to be a weapon per se. I think as long as you have an item equipped in your primary hand you won't get cut. I may be wrong, and this might not be the case in b42, so test at your own risk.

yea I think even items without a 3d model can do it, can't tell for sure but I used to play with a mod that made the map all beat up from the start and I remember removing glass from windows on really freaking dire situations lol, so I think almost anything works.

You forgot to mention that keys for cars can be found on nearby zombies or the house or the driveway they’re parked in. I’ve broken unnecessary passenger windows to find the key in the house or on a zombie.

You'll have like 500 rounds of 5.56x45mm NATO, and think you have a lot, then you go through 10 mags at the range, and are like, "Oh, no, I'm almost out of ammo again!" For real, you buy a box of 100 rounds of shotgun ammo, go to the trap range and realize that was only good for 4 rounds (our range does $5 for 25 clay pigeons). Not even an hour of shooting. Then you stock up, have a couple thousand rounds, and then everyone calls you a crazy person, and asks you why anyone needs so many rounds. SMH. Ammo gets used fast.

Yeah its called muscle strain, check the character options after choosing custom mode. Default is 0.6 now, but you can turn it off if you like

Survivor mode already has it at 0.5 instead of 1.0 Strength also decreases it by 10% per level, so professions and skills that increase it help. With Survivor mode + Stout for example I barely noticed it in combat.

I've manually set the muscle-strain multiplier to 0.3. There simply isn't enough to do while you're resting from combat. Devs need to implement a sliding-scale that slowly lowers your muscle-strain multiplier the more you use a muscle.

2:40 - I've broken windows and cleared out broken glass from them holding a tin can and even a rag. Not sure if that's a bug or it'll be fixed at some point but you really don't need a weapon specifically AFAIK.

opinion of short blunt or short bladed now the better wepon as the need to carry a flashlight once power goes out? i know there are new lamps for hats and belt but that depends on you finding them

short blunt is way better, short blade tends to not do a lot of damage, can only crit if a zombie is alone, and rarely do they multi hit. Meanwhile something like a police baton does good damage, multi hits, crits normally and doesn't damage zombie clothes if you want to take them, even a wrench can work in a pinch.

This is not my first time playing but it may as well be. Last time I played this was soooo many years ago. I remember nothing of course, and even if I did, it would almost certainly be irrelevant to today's standards. Anyways, I was wondering why I was so hot despite having stripped all my clothes off but then I tried to go to bed and realized that my health was draining extremely quickly. So when I woke up I tried to take the 9mm pill before I became someone else's problem, and sadly, that feature is apparently not implemented. Moments later I turned. I made it 3 days. So, I guess as a new player, my two questions would be: 1. How to combat? I had a crowbar. It seemed really really difficult to hit the zombies. I would swing too early or I would swing the wrong direction. If I had to deal with 2 zombies I would get scared and miss my swings even worse. I tried to let them come through windows and smash their heads while they were on the ground but they would just crawl towards me and bite my legs. What a mess. I had the thought, "Oh well, all this bleeding just means I can keep cleaning my bandages, treating my wounds, get experience," but nah...they're zombies...they bit me...I turned. 2. Is there really any way to tell, quickly, that I will turn? Like if I get just normal infected wounds, am I gonna get too hot or is overheating always an indication that I am going to turn? IRL it makes sense that your skin would get hot from infection but idk if that aspect of the game is true to life or not. PS 3rd bonus question, DAY 3 WEN WEN WEN WEN WEN???

rosewood fire station bookself has never had any books when you find a "perfect" car but the doors are locked so ya gotta break a window. wish there was a way to jimmy open a car door since we can hotwire them love the changes you can see the trunk in van cars when in the drivers seat soda is currenlty bugged i had a char just drinking em he didn't sleep for like a week

the "simple lockpicking" mod let's you do that with a screwdriver and paperclips, "common sense" lets you do it with a crowbar too. I always miss those mods when I have to play without them.

Wouldn't recommend knocking out stairs anymore! You can fall off sheet ropes and hurt yourself.

You can sleep with pillows!? I have so many hours and I never even thought about that! Then again, mostly played with friends so sleep has never been a problem

It is a new feature in b42, more comfort with a pillow, you can even use it with a bedroll and a tent
