Great road trip story Max and Gosia. Polestar specific question for both of you about the panoramic sunroof and the heat of the desert - was this an issue at all with it not having a cover? I'm considering a Polestar 2 for road trips with my dog and want to make sure she'll be comfortable. ...Hope to see more of your adventures soon.

It’s heavily tinted so wasn’t an issue. We never idled long in the desert tho in the middle of the day. We had climate on higher fan speed when necessary but didn’t have any issues. The blonde/leather nappa interior helps

Just so you know, a campsite 30 A outlet is a TT-30, which is only 120 V. It’s not like a 14-30 dryer outlet. I don’t know about the Polestar specifically, but a lot of onboard chargers limit 120 V charging to 12 or 16 A even if the EVSE offers more. Even if you had a TT-30 adapter there’s a good chance you’d still be stuck at wall outlet speeds.

@@Superman-xr1oh In the US, campsite electrical hookups will usually be listed as "30A" or "50A." The "30A" will be the 120V TT-30 receptacle, which isn't really used for anything else. In theory, that would support charging at 120V*24A = 2.9 kW, but a lot of EVSEs and/or cars don't support high currents at 120V, so you'll be stuck charging at wall outlet speeds (e.g. 120V*12A = 1.4 kW). I've read that Teslas do support charging at full speed from a TT-30. "50A" will be a 240V 14-50, which is great for EV charging, since it's the most common plug on Level 2 chargers, and it supports charging at up to 240V*40A = 9.6 kW. One downside is that, at least in the state parks near me, the 50A sites are usually more open and less private, since they're made for big RVs. Our favorite campsites are more wooded and private, and only have 30A hookups. The 50A sites also cost more. At least in the parks near me, all the sites with electricity will also have regular 5-15 or 5-20 wall outlets, and the 50A sites usually have 30A as well. The same campground or state park will often have sites with different (or no) hookups, so make sure to ask for or reserve a specific site with what you need. I don't know of 14-30 being used for campsites. Maybe you can find one in the laundry room since it's a common dryer outlet!

This is the excitement of being pioneers, blazing trails with optimism, courage, and a bit of anxiety! Americans freak out around that last one, but you two show it can be done! It even adds elements of adventure and discovery to one’s travels. Congrats on what sounds like an awesome trip, and thank you for sharing all that information! We took a trip in our 2021 VW ID.4 PRO (the shortest range trim) to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Like your trip, we had adventures and some uncertainty (no DC charging in those remote areas of N. AZ and S. UT!), but we also had a blast!

My partner and I are going to Mammoth Lakes from San Diego this weekend on our ID4. This will be our first road trip in an EV. It's good to know there is a comfortable set of chargers along the way. And we definitely plan on stopping at Eric Schatt's bakery.

That campsite situation is crazy. Why do they care if you are driving a car, RV, truck whatever as long as you paid for the spot? What a mess. Always call ahead. This isn't that abnormal. I have run into the campground mess before. They don't know how much power the car draws and they freak out. Carry lots of adapters and heavy duty extension cords. Well fruit tart is ok, but you still owe that girl a cinnamon roll! LOL Sounds like you had a good time. Other than almost dying...

LOL know the urge to update, 2 years ago I was in Austria and there were and update, so I found a spot really close to the hotel WIFI so I could get the update AND the games updates that the car felt needed re-installing for some reason. I was slightly worried if it was a good idea in the middle of a road trip but all went well.

To be fair, most EV owners in Vegas charging at DCFCs are tourists, they don't live there. I can assure you that most people that own EVs that live in Vegas have home charging.

I would cut a little slack. One is Out of Spec Guides is not the nerd channel. I bring only a 14-50 and a 5-15 when I do long journeys, and if they happen to work, then great else I use DCFC. Only done 100k miles electric though.

The TT-30 isn't even worth it, you need to get a TT-30 > 5-20 adapter, which only gives you 4 more amps as they are 120V circuits.
