This is our story of surviving Hurricane Beryl on our sailboat. In this episode, we find ourselves preparing for Hurricane Beryl, which has shifted its path towards Grenada, bringing with it the threat of Category 4 winds, rain, and storm surge. The anxiety is palpable as we and our cruising friends scramble to secure our boats and make crucial decisions to ensure our safety.
On July 1st, Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm, devastated northern Grenada and its sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Not a single building was left untouched and infrastructure was destroyed. Spice Island Marine and the sailing creator community have joined forces to aid in the rebuilding efforts of these beautiful islands. This joint initiative aims to raise funds for tools, building supplies, and other necessary items to rebuild small businesses that were completely destroyed. Without these businesses, many have lost their livelihood and the local community cannot get back on their feet. Learn more about the initiative and donate here, every little bit helps. www.risegrenada.org/

I was on Carriacou visiting with my family during Beryl. It was quite a traumatic experience for all of us. Not just going through the hurricane and the fear that brought, but seeing the absolute destruction of the place I called home was even more frightening. The complete and utter loss and devastation is almost more than one can bare.

Nice to see that you were responsible enough to take down your sails, most think a roller furling means you don't ever have to deal with sails again... like idiots. That's why they get destroyed in storms.

Glad you guys and your boat are fine. It didn't touch DR, but the sea was insane! On the south side. I saw the videos, and some friends sent me pictures of the Malecon in the Capital. The aftermath wasn't terrible, but it lifted some concrete benches around the coast walk, that weighed a ton! Seeing that told me this thing was very, very powerful for lifting and throwing a few feet away benches made out of concrete that had been there for decades and seen many many other hurricanes previously.

It is so hard to know which way to go when a hurricane is headed to you. With Ian we almost had our daughter come down from Tampa to stay with us in Ft Myers, then we sent her up to Atlanta as the hurricane turned into a monster and we thought maybe we should move Reboot north up to St. Pete. Then we decided to stay put and spent the next few days storm prepping. Then our county declared a mandatory evacuation at 5 in the morning so we had to take our dogs and leave Reboot 😣. When we could finally get back through all the damage, the only time I cried was seeing her still afloat and mostly ok. We were very lucky, and my heart breaks for the sailors and the people of Grenada and Carriacou. I will help any way I can with RiseGrenada 🇬🇩 ❤️‍🩹

Hurricane Beryl was a very unpredictable hurricane. I went from a named tropical storm to a named hurricane unleashing it's fury on islands leaving devastation in its path. Texas is now its next victim hitting shower as a Cat 3 i think. The weather systems are getting stronger and more unpredictable and stronger. They leave many lives claimed by its strength and many homes and businesses destroyed. The people of these hardest hit areas are resilient, but they know it going to be a long haul to get back what was taken. To these people i give my heartfelt condolences for the loss of loved ones and my hopes and prayers they do recover and rebuild these island paradises

Egmont is a good hurricane hole. Our friends who sheltered there said they never saw over 40 knots. Our boat in Clarke’s Court had no issues, but several friends had damage to their boats stored in Tyrell where sustained winds were 150mph were experienced. We are lucky the storm was not much of an event in the southern bays

You are very lucky to have escaped the wrath of the storm. If it had wobbled even a little bit, as storms do, your outcome could have been devastating. Forecasting is not an exact science and to stay so close to the potential eye is not the best judgement for a skipper. Trinidad is barely an overnight from where you are located and every boat that sailed there to escape Beryl is 100% safe. Why did you not take this option? This would be the choice of an experienced skipper with the safety of the crew and vessel at heart.

Shit guys, no transmission and unlucky early season hurricane. Glad you're OK! What's the plans for hurricane season? Some land travel? We decided pretty late in season we would hurricane hole in Rio Dulce, Guatemala. We have significant repairs we need to do, and this is now the best place to do it. Otherwise we would have been over there in Grenada! Although besides the hurricane, very glad we came over here. Rio Dulce is AMAZING. Highly recommend. Very saddening to see Grenada. The people in Grenada (and especially Cariacou) are wonderful and such a shame to see the devastation. Grenada is where we started our sailing journey on Saguaro, and definitely a core memory for us. Been in touch with people we know from LTD Sailing about it and things to do to help out people we know who had businesses destroyed. SV Saguaro

We THOUGHT it was the safe place to be too (Prickly Bay mooring field) but as the weather changed we realized the right decision was to move to a well known hurricane hole about 2-3NM miles away. All the boats in the hurricane hole made it through fine, some boats in Prickly Bay came off their mooring ball and crashed onto the beach/rocks.

Do you think what it was reading was accurate or do you think turbulence was caused by the hills? When I said that I was actually receiving a text from a boat just on the other side at Woodbun Bay that saw 60-66knts. We also talked about this with the other boats and everyone was saying it was nothing like the 30knt we had seen before.

@@adventurecrews Don't go down that conspiracy theorist rabbit hole. 🤦🏻🧙🏻‍♂️🇬🇧 Keep it real and follow the science .. but it's going to get worse we've all done this and the ocean temps and air temps have been building up like a staircase .. sooner or later all that heat energy and water is going to find a way ... but it's not going to always follow the old patterns and rules. Hope you get clear of the whole region and even then you're going to have to be prepared to get out from under multiple events. 🤞🏻 You were lucky this time now learn and apply it to life but don't forget its changing and Sea levels have and continue to rise.
