We arrived back to our boat after doing an 2 month Atlantic crossing the day before Hurricane Beryl made land fall in Grenada. It was to late to run to Trinidad for safety.
This is a raw uncut video of what we experienced in Grenada.
Our hearts go out to all the families that were devastated by this disaster. This is the first hurricane in 20 years to hit this low and it was extreme. So many people lost their homes, land based or floating, their businesses, and infrastructure. It truly is a gut wrenching disaster.

Ive lived in FL last 18 years and i cant tell you how many times weve said the words hurricane party.. you said it right when you mentioned the anticipation is awful! Anticipation is the worst! The one time my family ran from the storm it missed FL and hit us all the northest westest part of Georgia! We ended up in a cabin with trees down and no power for 5 days until we could get out of GA.. Murphy's Law! praying for you!

So thankful you're all safe. I've been following the hurricane watching the "live" posts. When I happened upon your post I knew I had to watch as I was already aware of the hurricane passing through that area. You live such a different, facinating lifestyle, I couldn't even begin to imagine how you all felt dealing with the knowledge all could be lost with this hurracain. But I guess we "land dwellers" have our tornadoes. Again, so thankful you're safe. My prayers go out to those less fortunate. ❤

And yes, great that you could get off the boat but yet be right there. And Yes, You were right in not bolting to Trinidad not fully prepared. You indeed could have lost your life. There was no time for errors. Boats can be replaced, but not your lives. When Hurricane Andrew hit us in Miami, we got off the boat. It was a total loss, ( full on cat 5+), we were not. We got another boat. Paying insurance all those years indeed did pay off. BTW, I like your boat. I taught sailing for a US Sailing school in San Francisco and off shore. We put those boat through some serious weather in the N Pacific. They held up to it. That N Pacific is rough!

How terrifying that must have been for them and still is. Thanks for the the info. I would suggest not tying dock lines made of rope directly to a cleat on a pier. The lines can get chaffed where they hang over the edge of the pier. That caused a lot of boats problems in our marina during tropical storms and cat 1 & 2 hurricanes. I made a loop of chain that passed thru the hole in the center of each dock cleat so that the chain rubbed on the edge of the pier, and not the dock line. I made an eye splice in the rope dock line with a metal thimble made tight inside the eye splice loop and the dock line was attached to the chain loop with a shackle. However, hurricane Katrina destroyed every single boat inside that marina a few years after I had sold my boat. The only boat still floating in the marina was a large paddlewheel casino boat. It had one of its dock lines break and it ended up sitting on top of a super yacht. The super yacht was crushed below the casino boat and could not be seen. This was in New Orleans. Glad you guys made it thru the storm safely.

EVERYONE, Grenada is NOT a good place for hurricanes. Yeah better than further north, but Grenada can and does get MAJOR hurricanes. We always sail to Trinidad for hurricane season. The boat ready to move south at a moments notice. Have made the trip back and forth at least a dozen times. Never regretted it. We love Grenada, Carriacou and the Grenadines. And it’s people. But please, don’t plan on Grenada for hurricanes unless you are completely ready to sail to Trinidad at first notice. And by mid July, we just go. I am so happy that you lucked out where you are. Just a little more to the south and it could have been a disaster there too. And good on you for helping there!

@@nurryskitchen4738. When I lost my voyaging home to Hurricane Andrew, Miami haven’t had a hurricane in -25 yrs! Only takes one. Grenada does get them.

I think that we all think of Grenada as a safe zone when it comes to the hurricane season. But as we have seen weather patterns make there own plans. Anything can happen out here we just need to try and stay on top of it and prepare the best we can for the situation that comes our way.

@@sailinghonutime Exactly. We say that hurricanes don’t look at the weather predictions. They do what they going to do And with climate change, all bets are off the world over.

@@sailinghonutime yes I read lower in your comments that someone else spotted that. I have seen several times in our marina after storms a sail has torn loose. I have even taken off my boom in a bad storm, but I noticed you have in-mast furling...

Why not dive on the mooring balls to investigate their reliability?

We have done this a lot in various anchorages. It helps to see the condition but you still never really know how safe they are, just how they appear.

Thankfully, it wasn't too bad for us, just very stressful. Nearby 11 boats ended up on shore, and less than 30 miles away is total wipe out.
