This has been a great series. The game is short on real-time tutorial information for some of the more difficult concepts, like colonist mood management. Your dome setup makes a lot more sense than those I was building. I think I now understand why so many colonists were giving up on the colony and asphyxiating themselves outside the domes. Thanks for the great info!

Well the game didn't explain it very well but from all appearances yes. Basically they were leaving the expedition, then they would die of asphyxiation. Since I had open homes and jobs for them, plenty of food/water/air/etc it didn't make any sense... now I feel like it was because their moods were too low, and I was also trying to have people move between domes to live/work and that doesn't work.

Thank you so much for the tutorial! I picked up most of the stuff from the earlier videos just watching the alpha build and early access players, but most people have to stop before they get to setting up the domes and I'm not sure how well I would have picked up happiness management without someone at least pointing out that it's important. On an unrelated note -- asdfghjkl; it bugs me SO MUCH that finished research options are grayed out and ones you haven't started are colored in. I don't even know why my mind insists that the opposite makes more sense, but it does and I'm kind of hoping really hard that someone in the modding community is going to have the same issue and figure out how to swap them. Urk.

This is not a rant merely and FYI. For those that are thinking Quill's play thru looks too easy is because he is playing on a very low difficulty mode. His sponsor gives him lots of money, research and rockets. The area he landed in has a low chance of threats. This play thru is meant as a teaching guide on how to play which is hard to do if the planet is constantly trying to destroy everything. Go back to the first video and check the options he could have chosen.

research is critical early in the game..you have to have a certain number of techs researched before 100 days are over, failing to do so doesn't constitute a game failure but it affects your overall score. Also the tech that appears in the tech tree is completely random.

It's too bad he either didn't know or didn't cover how you can hand pick exactly which specific colonists come on the transports. He ticked a few boxes then let RNG handle the rest but you can hand select colonists so if you want 10 engineers and 2 medics, you can disallow everything but engineers and medics then click the review button and approve two medics and 10 engineers. Letting RNG handle it means you're just as likely to get 10 medics and 2 engineers (assuming enough pass other filters).

The one thing I see that I THINK is wrong in this is that Quill isn't managing the shifts effectively. From what was explained on the Paradox streams, people can work the first two shifts without complaint, but don't like working the third (midnight) shift. Quill has the morning shift activated for everything, and the afternoon shift is only active on a single building (med center). That means there's not enough workers in the morning, and not enough jobs in the afternoon. What he should be doing is balancing things out. So, for example, make the machine shop work in the morning and the hydroponics work in the afternoon.

Too bad workers can't live and work in different domes. I'd like to think it would make more sense from a colony building standpoint to separate productive and leisure areas into distinct domes, and having commute as another challenge in the game.
@TekGriffon6 жыл бұрын
It becomes a lot less of an issue with the medium, large, and super-large domes. With those you have more than enough space to cater to all the comfort stuff and still have plenty of room for production jobs.
@Loalrikowki6 жыл бұрын
Moving citizens around outside of domes is a costly and potentially dangerous prospect. Having the colony's survival depend on it would seem to be an unnecessary risk; better that every dome be at least somewhat self-sufficient.
@Latronibus6 жыл бұрын
IRL, you would absolutely use sealed hallways between your habitation areas, instead of self-contained domes like in Surviving Mars. But you are right that what colonists actually do when they leave their dome (suit up and brave the elements) would be risky. Except that they do this *every day* in order to work in mines and polymer factories, so it's just kind of weird and arbitrary.
@Gurumediatationgamer6 жыл бұрын
I agree on this. Perhaps a dlc in the future though :)
@mr.battle206 жыл бұрын
They now can. The new DLC "Opportunity" has added passages between domes. Colonists can now move freely between domes, which means you can specialize the domes (residential, work space, agricultural, leisure, etc.) Pretty much how the game should've been in the first place.

One visual that I wish was in the game is that as a basic resource, like concrete, is being mined, the little icon on the map starts to dim or gray out. And when the resource is completely exhausted, the icon disappears completely. I get that there is graphical representation of the area being cleared out, but having the icon still there is kind of distracting and misleading.
@ScientistDog6 жыл бұрын
That happens with the other sources (water, metal and rare metal), but concrete deposits are bigger than the area a single extractor can mine. You can demolish your extractor when depleted the zone and build a new one at the side and keep mining (especially in the bigger ones). Though is not very profitable to mine the last remains (the borders), so there will usually be some concrete to mine.

If you check the first video in this series, there's a tab in setup called Mysteries or something like that. Seems to be some sort of late-game special thing.

If u completed the mystery, researched all things and achieved all milestones, maybe builded all the wonders... And u done. Nothing remain the end of the game. the concept of "they wont goto another dome to shop or work" is one of those really weird game mechanics that make no sense in an IRL setting. Of course if you had to don spacesuits to move between the domes, i'd understand it, but theres supposed to be connected pressurized tubings between the domes. Lazy martians....
@edmartin8753 жыл бұрын
There are tubes between domes available in the game but he hasn't touched on that yet.

@@edmartin875 Actually i was speaking about them not solving that problem either. They used to only allow workers to go between domes but they got a huge morale penalty for some dumb reason. @Adjuni6 жыл бұрын
True, but you have to play a game without concentrating on it because you have to entertain the people watching you. Not many people can focus on playing a strategy (City builder but close enough) game well and still engage with ones audience. Sitting in complete silence and playing does not make for something entertaining to watch for most people.
