When you’re constantly stressed about money and bills, you also have way less energy to actually go out and look for a better paying job. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s a lot harder mentally to do that. There’s also decision fatigue. You’re constantly trying to decide whether you should pay your electric bill or get groceries for the week, plus a million other decisions that need to be made like that. That leaves you with no energy to try and better your situation. Source: me. I’ve been both super broke, and financially comfortable. You have so much more mental energy when you’re financially comfortable.

Colleges tuition should just be a fixed percentage of your income over a set number of years immediately following your graduation. This would incentivize colleges to make sure you get the profession they trained you for. They would work with employers to get you placed in a position right out of college. As it stands, I'm 40 years old and am still paying off a degree that I never used.

I think the cost of living is in the exact words, “The cost of living.” Because prices went up on everything but especially housing, it requires more money to Live. Most of our income goes to housing. Not food or any other thing that we actually need to live day to day like food and water. I remember when 12.00 an hour was pretty good. My rent was 475 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment.

@BonchegoBonchego I remember that too; my first boyfriend in college worked part-time at a local pizza hut as a full-time college student & didn't have a car & paid his $525 a month apartment working as a waiter there. That same apartment would be about $1,800 a month or more now.

You should do an experiment. For a month, you can only survive off $7.25/hr. Relay back to us how it is like to live while paying all your expenses (how much you are at a loss). Of course, I think you could do this on paper (I do not think people actually want to see you get behind on any payments). To date, not wealthy KZbinr wants to do this; however, it would be a big signal to the politicians and CEOs of the world that "he has a point!"

Prices go up, giving the poorest more however ensures a good strong economy because of the speed of money. The faster money exchanges hands, the stronger the economy. The poor spend money instantly on necessities, which helps the economy. Inflation is typically supply chain issues, binge purchasing related to fear (toilet paper), increases in gas prices or plain greed by business.

A case worker at a nonprofit or government agency can sometimes help with locating resources for low income families. A lot of the times, the community services that are offered like at food pantries or where free hot meals are served will also have information to guide the person to resources to help. Unfortunately, everything takes a lot of time and they try to make things as accurate as possible but it sucks when you are poor and you try to get the help you need and you hit a wall because you don't qualify due to having or not having something.

Graham, when you ask "What is a living wage?", you must first ask "What is living?", because barely surviving is not living. In fact 'hardship' is that experience that you (just barely) survive.

So "surving" is the opposite of "living"? I say "living life" is a minimum of one international trip annually and at least two other cross country trips... a large home on the lake.. and not having to work for a living... I guess I'm not making a "living wage" then.. Did out ancestors not "live" because they had to hunt for their food and build their own shelter?

In the Seattle area, I feel like $100k is livable wage. I saw one study that says to be comfortable in a 50/30/20 budget, you need $120k. You need $220k to buy the median house (which puts nearly all single people out of the housing market -- you need a couple where both earn $110k+. Ideally, significantly more in case one gets caught up in the periodic tech layoffs).

All the money is in electricians and HVAC guys and welders and homebuilders and none of those things cost that much money to learn how to do compared to a four-year college for some degree that you get out and make $14 an hour. You were starting to take your show on the road. I think you should go and Graham tries to be a welder for a day and Graham tries to be electrician for a day Graham trying the trades. 😂

If our taxes worked appropriately on a sliding scale of income and then that money was used directly for something like a minimum liveable wage our economy would be a lot better off. With that said - there also needs to be something done about how properties are valued and charged for (especially with rent). Here in Dallas, there are some one bedroom apartments that are…. Sub standard at best that go for $1300 and that just seems ridiculous when you think about the neighborhoods they’re in and the average incomes of the people around them.

It goes back to having better tax breaks. I always have this conversation with my peers. It costs a lot to run a business and then we have $10s of thousands of taxes to pay, depending on the business size. Tax breaks allows our business to give back to our employees. At least that’s that way our business works. All extra revenues went back into raises and bonuses and more overtime hours. Our main problem is the lack of employees.

Minimum wage has not increased since 2009. Many companies have realized how out dated this number is and have already started raising wages. Leaving it this low only allows unethical companies to take advantage of disadvantaged workers and pay them less then they're worth. The government needs to close the gap, the current minimum wage is unethical.

Agreed but $15 is too high. There needs to be a mechanism so it adjusts automatically, like a COLA for SS so there aren't huge jumps.

*VRI TOKEN* has the most potential to do more than X10. ETH and BTC will most likely do a X5-X6, but that's fine for me. Gotta look for better entry points while I stake IRIS and PGEN, then wait for Polygen's next raise as I also look at their new partnership with Kenzo Ventures.

Agreed about the benefits beaurocracy sucking. But instead of universal basic income, perhaps a negative income tax would work better. That way, rich people can't get extra taxpayer money, and poor people dont have that benefits cliff preventing them from making more than a certain amount. It would kind of be like a redistribution program built right into the tax system.

I was sure the year would end badly for me but I think *VRI TOKEN* is spot on with what they do and how they do it. Can't say for how long it's gonna work and for sure it is overyhped right now but even for half a year or something it would be smart to ride the wave and then eventually jump away but the thing is why this is smart right now is because it's so cheap, won't ever find a better entry than now

Here in Australia our minimum wage is $23.23 per hour for normal business hours and more for weekend work with people getting paid double the minimum wage on Sundays. I think ours is too overly generous really especially as we have a higher corporation tax than the US. Small business really takes the hit.

No business that cannot pay its full time employees enough to survive on does not deserve to be in business. Our country does not need a small business if their business model is dependent on their employees not making enough to pay basic bills like rent food and gas.

Put me on minimum wage with no assets, but also no debt or obligations. I'll show just how doable it is. But let's be honest, in the vast majority of the country right now, if you're getting hired at less than $15hr, you're doing something wrong. Target is hiring at $18hr plus benefits for starting postions.

Well, the central resource doesn't exist YET, but I'm working on it! I'm writing "Hard Times, The Encyclopedia of Frugality." There are sections on housing, food, paying taxes, transportation, household (utility bills, etc.). Each section begins with a list of resources for free and drastically reduced cost goods and services from Federal and State governments and charities. Planning to publish this year. I looked for these resources and couldn't find them, so I figured I would do the research and publish them! Glad to know you agree that there is a market for this information. I plan to market this (heavily) to local public libraries. Wish me luck!

Please do a video on the REAL living wage and not on government assistance. In Ohio you cannot make minimum wage and get HCAP assistance if your working 40hrs a week. A real living wage in Ohio using rents and the 50/30/20 rule is probably closer to 75k a year.
