I'm a Marine. That is to say....I enlisted the U.S. Marines at like 18/19 years old and stuff. Did my military service and got honorably discarcheg. If all else fails. I'm still under 35 years old. I really do like the French Foreign legion.

The best book about the Legion is Simon Murray's 'Legionnaire - An Englishman In The French Foreign Legion'. Have read it several times over the last 40 years. Murray served in Algeria during the fight for independence. It is a superb read.

There is a great book by Morris Opler called ...An Apache life / way.....where he describes the Apache practice of putting a smooth rock or stone into the mouth of a warrior ....this if I remember was done because of the hot climate and to conserve the exhalation of body moisture through the mouth whilst hunting or running long distances and to improve fitness forcing to breathe through the nose ....... incredible race of people ......true warriors.......

As an ex REP man, I've not seen rocks in the mouth, however, there was a punishment called "Le Boudin" (Boudin meaning sausage). It entailed filling up half a lorry tire inner tube with rocks, tying of the ends, carrying it over your shoulders and running around the parade square until told to stop. The worse the crime, the heavier le boudin and the longer you ran. Afterwards, you would sleep in a hole in the ground covered by a curved corrugated roof with bars at each end... Another punishment was to dig a hole and re fill it. I saw one guy, a Scotsman, disappear into the ground over a period of 2 days, no food, just water before finally being hauled out of the hole. He was then given a piece of bread and pate with a beer and told fill it up...

@@ChrisThrall Thanks. But I don't think I would be very popular because, after an "incident" with a sergeant, I deserted and went back to racing motorcycles. And yes, I do regret deserting.. I had leave, came back to the UK to cool off. I had 3 days to find a job or bite the bullet and go back. I found a job, and the uniform sits gathering dut in my wardrobe...

Whats the make up of nationalities like in the FFL now? 80's/90's was top heavy with Brits & Germans, I would imagine with the end of the cold war etc there would be a lot more Eastern Europeans and South Americans etc?
