One of the biggest reasons why people started to buy luxury was because they were looking for quality and better treatment for the workers. Luxury brands sold the idea that their bags were made by French/Italian grannies and granpas with 30 years of experience and generations in the business that were compensated fairly. It turns out they were Chinese slave labor in horrific conditions. It doesn't the quality went down hill, to the point that super fakes are not only indistinguishable, but sometimes better than the real ones. There are some hilarious stories about costumes detaining what they thought were counterfeit merchandise because of their terrible quality just to find out they were real

Jess, people are making returns at Chanel like I never seen or heard before! I was offered a nano kelly at the boutique that was a return according to my SA. The client bought 2 and returned both within the 14 days for a money refund. I was offered both by my SA. Then at another boutique offered me a unique flap that was initially offered to me but I didn't get the message in time, so it was bought by another client and later returned and I was offered it again!

I've never seen that kind of price spike before so I don't know how things will settle down from it, or if it will. I think you might be onto something though, comparing it to the sneaker market, especially given how much production has increased from the luxury houses. Another great, thought provoking vid.

IMO entering luxury bags is more difficult for gen Z. Most top tier brands have no entry level bags in boutique around $1-1.5k. In 2019 you could get a bag from most brands (with exception to Chanel and Hermes). With prices of today its a real upfront investment. The prices are peoples rent and more for the month. Saving for a first luxury bag (which many of us did for our first purchase) takes so much longer at todays prices. I dont think its a coincidence that we see genz on social media with supermarket hauls, cotton tote bags going viral, and non-luxury brands. Paying for a trip in some cases is significantly cheaper than a bag. And when it comes to experience vs luxury item, many choose experience. Mid-Tier brands however are having a moment IMO. The price point is easier to afford than top tier, the styles are trendy and timeless, leather is still an option, and you can still get a nice boutique experience or buy online depending on brand. I think mid-tier will continue to have a moment until economy improves.

good point, I'm old and remember when LV was a couple hundred and I thought that was a huge amount to spend on a bag. I thought a $1K bag was a once in a life time purchase. my first was a Balenciaga and that was my only high end bag for like 10 yrs. when I got a neverfull in 2018 it was $1400. I cannot believe that bag is $2K now. and now I think $3K is "not bad" for an all leather bag... not that I necessarily have more money, but they are priced as such, and hermes and chanel has me thinking less than $5K is "reasonable". it must be hard for young people to pay bills and see handbags that are a couple thousand, but the mid end bags are very stylish and good quality like coach and Kate spade, and they have always been.

I think the trend is that Gen Z is rebelling against the whole luxury mostly because they cannot afford it. I keep seeing reports about how the job market in the US is abysmal. Also, what I find of interesting is that Gen Z are more into traveling than purchasing items. Even the ones who max out their credit cards, they prefer to travel. Luxury will never go out of style for those who can afford it without a thought. I do agree that the ubiquity of certain brands is also lessening the excitement of being one of the rare few to have either the bag or sneaker. I honestly don’t care if something is everywhere, if I like it, I get it. I will always watch your channel as it brings me joy 🌸

The job market and the economy in the US is booming. But perception is everything, and Gen Z is a very socially conscious generation. They don't like overconsumption, they prefer second hand or vintage items because they see the effects of what fast fashion has done to our world. The brands did this to themselves by trying to compete with the fast fashion cycles.

I think you might be right about the fact that luxury is not as popular or relevant as two or three years ago. There are many factors to consider such as the price increases, the cost of living, inflation, the overexposure of luxury, the hateful rhetoric towards luxury enthusiast and the new generation who wants to stop consuming and focus on experiences. The resale market is not as strong at the moment, the price is going down and it will continue to go downhill. The birkin baits has risen to 3-1 to 4-1 ratio, people are selling their bags because they are not even getting offer the specification that they originally wanted, this is the first time in years that I’ve seen so many birkin, Kelly and even Constance price is going down in the second hand market. The demand for any luxury bags will continue to slow down and we will see it better next year. Thanks Jess you’re an amazing KZbinr 😊 keep going we’ll continue to watch you

Hi Jess. I agree with you100%. I just got back from another trip to Japan and I was looking at Birkens while there. As an avid handbag lover and collector it was clear that many of the resellers there had not got the memo on the economy. The prices of Birkens on Fashionphile were a lot better by about 15-20% so I figured I can wait and pick one up at home. Not sure if you have heard but Hermes sales were down by 2%! That is a first!. The FOMO really got to everyone during lockdown. Since Hermes makes 50,000 Birkens per year and they have been doing this since 1984….then there are literally over 2,000,000 Birkens roaming the planet. So rare they are not. Hard to get from store yes. Easy to get from resellers yes! But I love my bags and ave for over 30 years. i am not a bag flipper as I notice many people are. I have bags in my collection that are over 30 years old. My oldest a Bolid Secret is 40 years old. So I do not mind the resell market tanking since I hold on to most of my bags and always appreciate a great deal!

I think you’re right and some of this is already happening. My one small example happened recently at Hermes. I was traveling and not at my normal boutique. I ended up buying a birthday gift for my mother, a cute hat (she loves hats and I’ve purchased Hermes hats for her before) anyway the sales associate out of nowhere started asking me were there any bags I was interested in today and kept asking me “what about an Evelyn bag.” Previously this had never been my experience, not in my home boutique, or on my travels to other boutiques. I’d never experienced them pushing bags and why Evelyn so hard. I know an Evelyn is not a B or K, but I’m sure if I had been willing to play along a bit more I could have scored something cool. My point is, maybe things are already starting to change and shift toward more availability. Something to think about.

Between Vintage stores, here and abroad, Farfetch, The Real Real, Fashion File, Italist, Luxury Promise, etc there are thousands and thousands of luxury handbags for sale. Hermes for one. Why would anyone play the "game" to hopefully be "offered" a bag. You have to create a relationship with an SA to get a quota bag. Imagine begging for a store to take your money. First because of the hype and secondly because the attitudes of the SAs turn me off. And I’ve experienced being made to feel like dirt at Hermes. I am someone that thoroughly enjoys the boutique experience and I’ve only ever had wonderful experiences at Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Chanel in many stores all over the world, the Paris flagship stores in particular the staff and SAs are delightful! And in my local stores, the experience has been pretty good experiences as well. I think when the Hermes hype dies down, the SAs there will finally get humbled (hopefully) and will make a little bit more effort in being nice not just to selected clients/selected demographics . And then only then will I probably start my Hermes journey 😅

The development of technology re super accurate copies of bags will affect the luxury market too (sneakers are also easily replica-ed nowadays)… I think this will definitely affect bags that aren’t on “Hermes’ level’ of collectability”. Even brands like Delvaux don’t sell as high on the pre-loved market, and their products are meant to be very well-made/have heritage history behind them… idk if Joseph Duclos sells well on the resell market. The Margaux is also being replica-ed-easy to do since the bag is minimal w/ no unique hardware-as many want to look of a Margaux, but not the price… especially since no one knows if it will hold/increase its value. I think the benefit of having a real Hermes piece is it’s specific history (which to some holds cachet… tbf to others not so much), that it’s partly handmade (some elements are machine stitched tbf) by Hermes’ trained craftspeople who I hope are being paid fairly by Hermes considering the price of the bags, I genuinely love Hermes’ hardware, and they’re items that’ll last a lifetime which can be passed down to loved ones (whilst potentially holding its value). Another positive is that trained craftspeople can repair well-loved pieces. If someone is passionate about the brand, and it’s history then buying a real Hermes piece makes sense. Perhaps the resell might not be as high now, but with time/inflation who knows what will happen in the future? The only Hermes replica I’d be curious to get is a Dalvy in a sturdy/scratch proof leather, but as far as other Hermes bags are concerned… I still love buying the real thing. I’m also a fan of Longchamp for casual, no nonsense bags (love their coated canvas), and they’ve kept the price point of their pieces really fair imo.

Yep, and in terms of sneakers/designer shoes… they can be replica-ed, and from my POV aren’t an investment on the level of an Hermes bag that doesn’t have the opportunity to get as dirty/unsanitary as a worn-over-time shoe does. Re retaining value… I love Hermes bags, am so-so on investing in designer jewellery/watches (jewellery is also replica-ed now), and don’t see shoes as an investment at all.

I'd like to see you have a bag made for you. Like a Peter Nitz or something. I've messaged him a few times about an order but I didn't hear anything back. He does classes too. He's probably got a waitlist. Plus I don't live in Switzerland. Edit: I agree with you, fashion is a cycle. A very controlled cycle let's be real. Things go up and things go down and eventually come back around. In general though, in the last 30 years, not a lot has changed. Its kinda boring right now.

Great topic Jess. The sky high prices, low quality and horrible economy in the US, China and Japan all contribute to low buy to no buy customers. The bottom is about to fall out here in the US. Elections are at the forefront of many American’s minds. All I know is my 401k doubled under Trump and now it has lost under Biden. There are fewer jobs out here as well. Most working two or three jobs. But bag lovers will never change. I may not buy but am always in for good content like yours.

I wish you would have left politics out of this discussion, especially since investors prefer Democrats in the White House. "According to Liberum, a U.K.-based investment bank, since 1947 the average annual return under Democratic presidents is 10.8%, versus a mere 5.6% return under Republican presidents. The best stock market performance by a president in the post-World War II era came under Bill Clinton; the S&P 500 was up a whopping 210% in his two-term presidency, from 1993-2001. The second-best return under a U.S. president? That would be Barack Obama’s eight-year tenure when the S&P was up 189% from 2009-2017. Next up are a pair of Republican presidents: stocks rose 129% under Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961) and 117% under Ronald Reagan (1981-1989). Rounding out the top five is Democrat Harry S. Truman, who saw the S&P rise 87% during his eight-year term (1945-1953)." Facts and data are easily found on the internet. So, its best to avoid making this a political discussion especially when your implications are factually inaccurate. Good day.

@@qr5vy Nope, I'm not arrogant and will not "sit down." If objective facts make you butt sore, then that is a YOU problem. Trumpers ROUTINELY consume, digest, repeat, and spread misinformation, lies, and "alternative facts" to fit their political agenda, and I'm frankly tired of hearing and seeing it. On December 31, 2019, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 183.12 points or 0.6%, to close at 28,462.14 and the S&P 500 slipped 18.73 points or 0.6% to close at of 3,221.29. On Friday, August 30, 2024, the 30-stock Dow jumped 228.03 points, or 0.55%, to close at 41,563.08. The blue-chip index touched a fresh all-time high in the final minutes of the trading session and closed at another record. The S&P 500 advanced 1.01%, closing at 5,648.40, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 1.13% to end at 17,713.62. The Dow is UP from 28,462.14 (after Trump Administration) to 41,563 (under the Biden Administration). If you don't understand how these numbers impact 401K in the US, get a "finance bro" to explain this to you.

Resell market price is heading down, yes, there are people still buy preloved, but people used to think they can resell for a lot more money so they buy as “investment”. They realise these are not investments, so nobody is buying anymore. There are more Birkins, Kelly in the preloved market, agree, really not rare anymore. When people try to sell now, they need to take 50 to 70 % lost. Buy ONLY if you will keep it and love it. ❤❤

*unidups* If they look exactly the same, why would you pay 10 times more? No one is going to check my wallet without my permission, so who cares. Perfect looks are what matters! The experience of using it is what matters, and it's just as good as the original.
