What I've learnt from architecture school is that we don't have to be really competitive with our classmates. If we compare with the ones who are really good, then we will never appreciate our work. And when we compare with the ones who are (sorry to say) lower than us, then we would be arrogant with the little knowledge that we have. Therefore, the only person to compare is our past self. If we be so competitive then architecture is indeed not a fun place for us. And support your friends all the time. If their work is good or better than yours then, be happy for them. Help each other, we won't know when we will need their help too.

Agreed! I felt my own studio year was very supportive and it made a big difference. We supported, challenged, and questioned each other not to be mean, but to understand and improve. I had many classmates that I felt comfortable asking what they thought or to explain their concepts. Not having those friendships would have been a very lonely process. A big part of this atmosphere was the profs and school itself. They made it a priority to promote a collaborative learning environment.

Needed to hear this. I'm in my second year and have been getting quite discouraged because I feel as if my classmates have not been pushing themselves hard enough to raise the standard of work in my studio classes now that we are online. This was just a nice reminder that I don't need others to raise the standard in order to push myself to put out my best work.

@sp-tj9ye4 жыл бұрын
I think that happens due to 2 main reasons 1) we don't know where to stop designing. How much is too much? 2) There is no end to creative process unless you define its limits in terms of time,work,detailing etc. I think creative people get caught into that trap to do a bit better design. You can work on a single design for a long & still won't be able to complete it. Creative mind will keep on hatching ideas.

Just finished my Masters this week! Other tips I would recommend are to: 1. Remember that people see the drawings, not the model. It’s important to set up views early and model only what is important and what will actually be seen on panels. 2. Borrow books! Especially architecture journals with illustrated floor plans and details. It’s important to read about notable architects and their ideas/concepts, it’s a great way to break through a design block. Don’t just look at Pinterest or what’s trendy. 3. Articulate your concept so that it could be understood by anyone, without the need for complicated language. I would test it by seeing if my parents could understand it. And yeah, get sleep. All-nighters seriously contribute to burnout further down the line. And don’t worry about what other people are doing, just focus on yourself and your goals 😊

My advice dont give up just because you are struggling in one project. Last semester for me was a nightmare i couldnt sleep i made a lot of mistakes, my teachers completely destroyed my ideas and i had a bunch of personal issues that made me doubt if i made a right decision with my career. When the semester finished i rest for half of my break then i planned and checked why was that semester a nightmare what made me feel an idiot. My floors plans had mistakes fine lets see how is the correct way to do it, i had no time not even to sleep then lets make a schedule and organize my time. I am soooo much better this semester, i am not the best but i am so much better now and i cant believe how much i struggled how my mental state was. You can do it if you are in a semester like mine was YOU CAN DO IT IT WILL GET BETTER.
@chibimaster78194 жыл бұрын
My advice is: don’t do all-nighters I know they’re super popular especially in architecture but seriously try you best to sleep! maybe you’ll feel like you’re behind in the first few semesters and stay up late to work but TRUST ME when I say that working on a full night sleep or even just half a night of sleep has been the best decision of my life. Staying up late for weeks sucks, I got so ill and barely got any work done. Also don’t sacrifice your health. No amount of work will be as good as the work you make when you are healthy and well-rested. Eat, sleep, exercise if you want, take breaks. It will genuinely show in your effort because your mind will actually function the way it should. You are a human not a rock. Hell, even machines need fuel and maintenance. My final advice is, if you can’t take criticism, don’t worry. You’ll learn to. No one wakes up one day and is suddenly immune to harsh critique! No one will tell you this and I WISH someone had told me, but taking critique is a skill you have to learn. Like drawing and model making, it takes practice and it takes time to get used to it and for you learn how to use it properly and not get personally offended. It’s hard, and I still struggle, but it’s important to remember that this is about the project, not about YOU. I just wish teachers didn’t frame it as such sometimes 😪😪😪

top 7 things I wish I knew before arch school: -your mental health is important
@kylesinko4 жыл бұрын
This is just such a well produced video Rasha. I'm so impressed! I've learnt that I'm a bit of a perfectionist too. As I watched the video I thought back over my last 3 years and wanted to share some of the things I wish I knew if I were to start again. 1) This is something you touch on in the video. Architecture isn’t just designing buildings. You need a mix of skills - or a willingness to learn. A lot of students go into architecture school thinking they’ll just be drawing buildings and creating cool designs. Architecture is a mix of so many different skills and so you need a mix of skills to be successful - or - you need a willingness and an open mind to learning new skills and not getting stuck on old ways. 2) Architecture is difficult. Just because there’s no exams, it doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact. Architecture can be quite difficult. Architecture is very much a profession involving a lot of problem solving and deep thinking. It’s not necessarily an easy course to study but if you’re up for the challenge it can be extremely rewarding. 3) It’s a long road ahead. Get ready for a long journey - you don’t stop learning. Ever. I don’t just mean get ready for 5-7 years of formal education - I mean get ready to learn every single day for the rest of your life. Architects, or good architects, never stop learning. Something my dad always tells me is to improve in any little way, every single day. Doing so, you’re becoming a better person and you’re changing your life for the better. Get ready for a long degree, followed by a long profession of learning and experimenting with new things. 4) There’s no “set way” of doing things. Try new things and experiment. Architecture is subjective. There’s no set-in stone way of designing or doing things. Those students who are most successful in architecture school are the ones who step outside their comfort zone, step away from what everyone else is doing and experiment with their own ideas and ways of doing things. 5) Those who practice outside of their formal education do best. Architecture school, and any formal education really, are made to teach generalised information for the masses. If you want to gain specialised skills and learn something difficult that others aren’t, you need to practice architecture outside of your university degree. You need to push yourself to better yourself in ways others aren’t. That’s how you create opportunities for yourself and strive to be a better person. 6) Don’t get discouraged by other’s experiences from school. Social media is filled with architecture memes and comments from other students, complaining how they don’t get any sleep, they don’t have any money, they haven’t learnt anything. Don’t let other people’s experiences discourage you from studying architecture. If you stick to your own guns and stay in your own lane. Focus on bettering yourself every single day in every single way - you’ll find yourself getting better and better. Don’t let what everyone else is doing influence you and your thoughts. 7) The more time you spend on a project, the better it’s going to be. But your design will never be finished. I’ve found that the more time you spend on something, the better you’re going to be at it. If you were to put students’ grade into a chart against how much time they spend on their classes - you’d see a direct correlation between the amount of time they spend on it to the grade they get. The more time you spend, the higher the grade. You need to be able to manage your time and not leave everything for the last minute. And again, this is something you’ll learn with experience. 8) You must be a good listener. Architecture is very much about listening. If you don’t listen, you can’t design to the client’s brief, you can’t work with engineers, surveyors, builders and other contractors, you can’t make the changes your teachers are suggesting. If you’re a good listener, you’ll go very far. 9) Just say yes. There’s nothing stopping you from doing a semester and then dropping out. You have plenty of time. If you’re 17 years old or 47 years old, you’re not even halfway through your life. You’ve got plenty of time. Don’t think that you’ll be wasting 6 months of your life for trying architecture school. It’s an experience nonetheless and if you think you’ll enjoy it - just say yes and give it a go. Having this give it a go mentality will take you far in anything you do in life, so it’s worth adopting this mindset. I hope someone finds this helpful. Good luck everyone!

I'm a modelmaker before I'm an architect, people can think the materials are expensive and all, but all you really need for a study is some paper, scisors and glue. Sometimes I even use kid's modeling clay for studies, it's really good because it has a little more freedom than paper. I experienced in college that not many people enjoyed doing models, but because they couldn't understand that it wasn't there just to show a beautiful design, but to study posibilities.

I always felt discouraged in model making early on because many people that entered my freshman class had very good craft and attention to detail, some were already experienced model makers and were praised for it often too. I had no experience making models and I hated working with the materials they made us use (tiny sticks of bass wood). Once a professor told me years into the degree about how to do modelmaking as a way to generate ideas without so much focus on craft it made a lot more sense to me.

It is not a big deal. Don't try to be perfect from the first go. Maybe you see a good concept in one sketch... take that idea and start a new sketch, beginning from that concept. That's how you can built it up. In the end, you can look at all your sketches to see your thought process (and for you teacher to see it as well). I have just started by 5th and final year of my masters. Boy, it has been a long journey but I am proud of how much I have grown. It is very rewarding to look back on the years. I have gone from being a student who never had a finished portfolio, not even plans and sections sometimes (due to procrastination and perfectionism) to now letting go of that 'control' and just letting things happen! This mindset has allowed me to produce many sheets that show my ideas and are in no way near perfect, but a lot more promising than the blank sheets of my first year. I have realised that my need to be 'perfect' in the past had capped my ability, and it would have been better to just try to produce something and not fixate too much on the outcome. Believe in yourself and on that note I wish good luck to all the architects out there! x

Im A+ student in design this is my last year in school 🙏🏻, take my advice don't defend ur project or argue with ur instructors specially if your are in an arab country🤣 they take it personal. 2nd start working in ur project earlier so when u show ur concept u bring everything such as first Draft plans and 3d sketch and diagrams. Care more about the little details, give more than what is required such extra diagram or structural details or anything. when u get an idea while sleeping or driving or any write it down or sketch it because it easy to forget about it. Never complain and stay positive ♥️

The first tip is truly gold! I have been affected by the 'perfectionist disease' throughout my whole academic career and it is something that is extremely hard to get rid of. I am too going through the process of embracing the unknown and letting ideas flow freely, although I am still far from achieving total peace of mind! I hope I'll eventually manage to someday...anyways, great video! Keep it up :)

I'm doing good on the first 2 years in arki school, but right now It seems that the spark that I once had was gone. It feels like everything is a chasing after the wind, I am currently on my 3rd year. I kind of speculate that the cause of this is the groupmates that procastinate a lot. I'm a person whos doesn't procastinate and wants to design something good. But these days I have a feeling that my groupmates pulls me down. I usually take lead on design groups and sometimes I mostly do the task that my groupmates aren't willing to do. This cause me a lot of exhaustion and deep depression. And really slows down the progress of everything. And now I found my self procrastinating which is not so me before. I always hide this emotion to my fellow groupmates, in which I portray to them is this enthusiastic vibe of mine. I'm kind of thinking right now if it's better give up or not. But for now I will just hold until the dark clouds is gone.
@SurvivingArchitecture4 жыл бұрын
KeinAeron, you can't bottle up your emotions. It will not do you any favors and will only hold you back. You need to speak up and speak to your group professionally about the project. It's not fair when some people take advantage of you so you can't let it happen. If talking to your group doesn't work, you need to speak to a lecturer and inform them of the situation. They will most likely offer some advice on how you can finish the project and handle the group. Speak up! 💛

Its the same happening to me and tell teachers about it, 😔 they say its just a excuse and that if other group mates are not working then you alone do it, which is not possible because its alot. I am getting mad. I have got selfish and lazy friends😔

What I learnd in architecture school is that organization and discipline is the key. But the place I've learn the most was in the pratice. I'm brazilian and around here to graduate you need to complete some hours at an internship. What I've lived in school doesn't even compare with the knolege and maturity I've acquire having the skin in the game. The most valious lesson I've learn, working with architecture since my 3rd semester is that there are an enourmous variety of professionals profiles and the market need that diversity. Maybe you are not the most creative one, but you have serious management skills or you are not good with producing visual contente but you are an excellent techinic. Do not struggle about what you suck at. Know your weekness and work to improve it, but focus on the path that you are really good at.

I happened to just finish the whole program in my university and I’m finally preparing for my thesis. During my first years (not to say, almost during my whole time at college), I struggled so hard in my projects. Everything ended up square. All my houses looked like boxes. Not for lack of imagination (I have tons of it) but for my obsession with logic and applicability. My classmates always came with some crazy ideas, cool shapes and interesting things, because they didn’t care. My professors told me that was the purpose of the first design courses. To free my mind and to take risks. But every time I wanted to come up with something cool, I started questioning everything: “This roof makes no sense”, “this is structurally weak”, “This garden is too expensive, I’m sacrificing budget”, “No one will like something like this”, “the ceiling is too high, the wall is to high, the columns are thin” and I always ended up not taking risks and making the most boring spaces for my presentations. It took me a while to get out of that mindset. Don’t make my mistake. Have fun and take chances, be always able to do new crazy stuff. I’m still pretty perfectionist but I don’t let that to block my imagination anymore.

The biggest problem as an architect is 'letting go ' of a project. When you're not working on the project , you're constantly thinking about it and stressing yourself out. This has gotten so bad that you start feeling guilty after working for insane hours and taking a break because the project still leeches away at the back of your mind.

Well guess I'll drop out lol I currently lack motivation, so I procrastinate on all my assignments. It might also be because of perfectionism, but also my non-existent mental health. I really thought all my life that this is what I wanna do, but...I'm not so sure anymore. And the fact that I might not be cut out to do this affects my mental health even more. yikes It was a good video tho and I agree with all of your points. @@Ndowah Yeah...I feel you. Some people might be able to just drop out and move on but my fear of failure is so powerful that dropping out would actually make my life worse. I can say after one whole year of Uni that I am still struggling but I consider the fact that I'm in my third semester a win lol. So yeah...hang on...you can probably do it even if it seems impossible. Just be sure to have people by your side who support you and understand your struggles, cause it can get pretty damn difficult at times. Wishing you best of luck!
@HoneyDimon3 жыл бұрын
@@sunshine1909 Still goddamn exhausting and stressful, but considering not many people get past the first year of uni, I am proud to say I started my second year and I'm still kicking. I think overall I was in a very dark place mentally at that time so that's why I strongly believed I'd drop out by the end of my first year. Thankfully getting a therapist helped a lot. I still have days/weeks when all I want is to drop out and sleep for a century, but there have definitely been weeks when I felt satisfaction after passing an exam or after finishing assignment that I liked the results of (in terms of drawings or models). So I'd say it got better but not less stressful or difficult.

I just started my architecture degree this September and it's a lot of work with so many different things to look at. How did you manage your time and balance social life with uni work and extra research in your own time? Thanks
@tyra59154 жыл бұрын
Since you just started I recommend using your extra research time on just getting to know the programs and commands and if ur not doing computer work get to know line weights and how to draw a perfect axon or finding new tools to make things with. once you learn these your work time gets shorter because you are also learning short cuts. Tbh social life is a hard one I recommend making architecture friends or just spending time w friends doing homework together, but I make sure to have at least one day without architecture so you can see friends on that day. I’m literally only in my second year and I probably don’t know that much, but I hope this helped.

Heyy! I’m not really sure if you’ll see this but.. I thought I’d give it a shot I’m a high school student (11th grade) so next year I’ll be applying to colleges I know that the reason architecture intrigued me was the designing part, bcz I enjoy drawing and sketching and I find older architectural designs so beautiful I could stare at them for hours.. and I really want my work to be something that benefits people in the community however.. I’m not really the best student in physics I never failed or anything and on average I get 80% on my work but.. do you think that could make going to an architecture school a wrong decision?? Do you think I’d be better off doing applied arts or smthg..

I am just now actually starting to use the library because of my thesis, and there is so much cool stuff that I did not realize we had and I can get any article from any school in the country if I just ask. I feel like I’ve wasted the past four years of not being as involved with the Architecture community by reading up on cool things.

The problem I faced during my academic is how professors criticize your work to make it rigid and minimal, Regardless of your efforts and ideas. Never got a chance to express my design my way. Even though you distant yourself from being competent, there is that one professor who always compare you with others and expects more and fail to appreciate your efforts. :)

I constantly feel tired, i have no energy to do anything, even drink a cup of water, i hate it and i hate my life. Every week i cry at least 2 times and consider to drop out at least once a week. To be fair though if anyone asked me if i would choose architecture again if i had the chance to go back in time i would say yes. It's a love-hate relationship. Things I’ve learned since working in architecture for a while... you don’t get enough time on projects. Don’t forget to hand sketch daily. People are scared to say “I don’t know” or “l don’t understand”. Learn 3D CAD now. Make sure you understand your end game (those pesky deliverables). The higher up you get the less time you get to design. Value engineering be like that sometimes XD
