You described the clamshell operation correctly- manual ones had thumb rests like on the ignition switch to manually drop the tailgate/ but the glass would still be electric.

I believe those 71-6 GM fullsize wagons had to be the heaviest wagons made,they had heavy duty leaf springs and a overbuilt frame.They were a good looking car,its nice to such a clean original car that was not destroyed in some demolition derby.They were great in the day and drove beautifully.

This car reminds me of a car similar to this one, that I wish I still owned. It was a 1973 Buick Estate wagon, with a 455 4 barrel carb, got about 10 miles per gallon. The electric rear window goes up into the roof, but my car had an optional non-electric tailgate that dropped down below. This Pontiac looks great, and the green interior is gorgeous. I like the steering wheel design, the vertical stripes on the back gate, and the sport wheels, but I am surprised it has crank windows. These cars are absolutely immense !

Power windows were still considered luxury car items, so were not common on low and lower medium priced cars. Even some Cadillacs had manual windows.

This brought back a funny memory. One of my friends bought a 74 Catalina sedan new in this same color. He came over to pick me up one evening and when he stepped on the gas, the nameplate across the dash fell off in my lap. I can still picture him looking at me and saying say WTF did you do? He only had the car a dew weeks and the dealer fixed it.

Maybe the funeral home used it as their 1st call car. Meaning, they sent the Pontiac to pick up a body from a nursing home, a hospital, a home and brought it to the morturary. I've never seen it done, but maybe they used the roof rack cover to partially cover the body when they 1st picked it up. They might have also used it to pick up flowers and arrangements but it seems to clean for flower pickup. I have a friend into professional cars and I'll ask him to look at this. The floor seemed so clean and not scratched I doubt gurneys or anything with wheels were dragged over the floor. I'm guessing again, if it had been an ordered car by the funeral home I would thought it would be black. Also for a funeral car the rally wheels are too busy for such a use. The standard 15" wheel cover would have been more proper.

Always liked the clam shell wagons which were made from '71 to '76. Although GM didn't make taillight changes to these wagons every year, 1974 marked a mid cycle taillight change to these wagons at all divisions. In Pontiacs case the taillights became less rounded. the equivalent sedans had taillight changes every year except for 1976.

I have to disagree. I have a 75 GP with this antenna in the windshield. It picks up radio stations better than any other vehicle we have.

That looks like a dual power clamshell, the one that was less expensive the window was power and the lower portion of the clam was manual, there was another ring around the keyhole that you would turn 90 deg or 180 deg and that would open the lower clam shell part, one would need to pull it up by hand, my family had a 76 safari wagon with the same pontiac rally wheels, ours had the wood grain on the sides.

You are incorrect. If the gate were manual, there would be a pull handle on the top center of the gate to close the gate with. It would also have the ring around the keyhole as you mention. With both of the these absent, it is a fully electric gate and window.

Yvette Vanderbrink said it had a 455 c.i. engine with 400 transmission - she mentions this right before she opens the bidding. It would have been a typical family vacation hauler back in the day. Maybe towing a boat or camper trailer - with that engine and trans....it could climb mountains !

At the time they were around here in alaska, not any real interest in how or other.... who knew what this car could come to be. Its a "new" old car and not a rig to take to any regular shop for repairs. Those clam shell doors were real problematic

I liked the 74 cars. Last year before the Catalytic Converter, great styling. They didn't run good stock, but being smog exempt nowadays, that is easy to fix. Just plug the vacuum line to the EGR, maybe richen the air-fuel mixture across the board, definately richen the idle mixture, and bump up the ignition timing some, and get rid of that vacuum advance block that disables it unless you are in high gear. It will run much better and use a little less gas as well.

Amazing condition car. Really is shocking though how much degraded a 74 was compared to mid 60’s Catalina. The interior is so bland and cheap looking with all the hard poor fitting plastic. Also the 74 was not a banner year styling wise for Pontiac. They just didn’t have that winner look they did 5-10 years earlier.
