Great video and a beautiful truck. Its kinda strange how we develop a strong fascination for certain material objects over others when we are children isnt? I have a very similiar story to yours. Its 1983, im 13 yrs old. Get my first job putting up hay bales for the ex govenor of Kansas, which is where Ive lived my entire life. He has a 74 highboy hooked to a hay wagon in the corner of a 40acre hay field. Fires up the Ford, puts it in granny gear, lets out the clutch and then jumps out the truck and tells me to start bringing him bales. I was amazed that the truck could drive itself across this field by itself, and it didnt matter to it if the trailer was empty or full, which I knew exactly how much weight it was pulling at idle, because I carried every hay bale. I had a smile on my face the whole time, and decided that day that my first vehicle would be a highboy. Two years went by, and I got my drivers license, and I found a 77 that had a 4speed, and I payed $1800.00 for it. Drove that thing like a dirtbike! Since then ive had a 74, a 75, another 77, and 3 76s. There have been many times I have cursed because of these old trucks, but everytime I have gotten out of one, as im walking away to go do whatever it is im doing, I always take a look back at whichever one I was driving at that time in my life and get a huge grin on my face! They are the toughest trucks ever built! Good luck to you, and thanks for sharing your truck and story how you came to getting it.

Great Video! Reminds me of the first "Dent Side" High Boy I saw as a kid in the Show Me state.....it was Navy Blue. About three to four years later, I saw that same truck quite often at the local 8,000 acre 4WD off-road playground known as "Number Nine Hills".....next to Park Hills Missouri. I found out the owner was Bob Chandler who purchased the truck new in 1974. Yes, this truck later became known as the original Bigfoot truck. Number Nine Hills had sand dunes along with gigantic sand piles along with red clay mud and very unique gray mud...resulting from the lead mines from years past...at one time the largest lead mines in the world. Your 1974 Ford F250 would have rolled off the assembly line with Kelsey Hayes rims with light to medium silver / gray paint. Not sure about the original tires, but the ones you have on your truck are very similar to the original tread pattern. Your truck most likely has the original NP 435 (4 speed) manual transmission behind the Big Block FE 390 V8. The transfer case should be the strong, reliable and durable gear driven NP 205. NP = New Process (New Process Gear Company)....which later became New Venture. The earlier Ford Super Duty trucks had New Venture transfer cases...NV 271 and NV 273. Ford is now using Borg Warner transfer cases in Super Duty trucks.

Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed my video! What a story! Did you ever get to chat with Bob Chandler? The blue on that truck is a beautiful color! You don't see many in that metalic blue. Kelsey Hayes rims, these would have been similar to what I have on there now right? Steelies. I was going to paint them grey or off white but decided on pure white. Yes it's an NP 435 (4 speed) manual transmission with a 390FE. It was an original 360 from factory. I believe it has a Dana 60 front axle. I need to work out how to identify it to make sure. bringatrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1974_ford_f250_4x4_high_boy_160815376260dec12a1974_ford_f250_4x4_high_boy_159918769408fa42201CTP_0550.jpg?fit=1356%2C2048

Had a 73 same color same everything was my baby. 1987 driving to Ft Collins from Green River Wyoming and hit a patch of black ice and rolled her off a bridge threw the mother out blew three tires and got ejected. Broke my neck and back. Truck wounded up on me till a sweet couple stop and dug me out and called for help. What was leftover was in a bone yard in Elk Mtn Wyoming……this was a a tear jerker seeing it but thanks for the time travel!!!🤠🤠🤠🤠

@@stacks_and_setbacks If you plan to come to the Cowboy state (Wyoming),.....very scenic drive over the Snowy Range on Highway 130 from Laramie WY to Saratoga WY and or Encampment WY. The road comes to a T...turn right to go to Saratoga or left to go to Encampment. Another very scenic drive awaits if you turn left and go through the town of Encampment (a few turns in town to stay on the main road) to continue on over Black Mountain and down to the town of Savery WY. If you like Old West history.......there are TWO must stops in South Central Wyoming. 1. Wyoming Territorial Prison located in Laramie WY on the north side of Interstate 80 and not too far from the Highway 130 exit. Famous Outlaws - The Wild Bunch.......aka - Hole in the Wall Gang - Robert LeRoy Parker - known as Butch Cassidy; Harry Alonzo Longabaugh - known as the Sundance Kid; Harvey Alexander Logan - known as Kid Curry......they all spent time in prison there. wyoparks.wyo.gov/index.php/places-to-go/wyoming-territorial-prison 2. Wyoming Frontier Prison Museum located in Rawlins WY a few miles west of Laramie and or North of Black Mountain. The historic Split Rock is North and a smidge West of Rawlins. The historic Independence Rock is West of Casper.....and Devils Gate is nearby...the entrance to the Sun Ranch. Can also see Hells Half Acre West of Casper. Devils Tower up in Northeast WY.....west of Gillette...near the town of Sundance. wyomingfrontierprison.org/ The Johnson County Range Wars .....go North to the Big Horn Mountains up around Sheridan WY. The historic "Wagon Box Fight" is near Story WY....just South of Sheridan. Fort Laramie is a great place to visit......located about 110 miles North of Cheyenne. I am not a big fan of the museums in Cheyenne.

You Gotta Be Kidding Me??? Some people sure step in the S%&( just at the right time. Well Mate, show me where to take my next step. Good for you Bud. Just looking at the interior sure brings me back. I drove some Fords in the 70's that were used for collision shop towing and chasing in Brooklyn. I can sure feel the shift from 2nd to 3rd. We used to invert the air cleaner lid to give the engine a more robust sound. Loved the bench seats and when an accident came over the police radio, possibly a 10/53 or a 10/85, off we would go racing through the streets to be the first at the crash site to claim the wreck to tow back to the shop. Those Highboys give you such a sense of purpose. Driving it is such a Blast but owning one would be the Dream. Of course it would need to be as clean as yours. Can you drop me a tip on finding these highboys through Facebook, Craigs list. Last but probably the most expensive would be BAT Auctions. Most of them on BAT are sourced by salesmen just looking to flip it and they still need a ton of work. Times have changed. Nowadays, rust and awful old fading paint are called "Patina". Must be some kind of "Wokeness Brainwashing". I'll take no rust and great paint any day. For your enjoyment, go to BAT and look up the last highboy, about 2 weeks ago, that went for $55,000 because it had such great Patina. CRAZY. Good Luck to you and your Truck. Hope to chat one day. Take Care Mate.

Very nice! I also have a 76 high boy. Mine is a bit rougher. I assume u still have the original 360 in it? Or has it been replaced with a 390? I like the wheel choice! I love the look of a simple steel wheel with aggressive knobby tires. My 76 had a roll bar in it as well? I wonder if that was a dealer installed roll bar? I should see about looking into that? I assumed somebody else put it in but idk? I notice your gap under the hood looks not quite right? Maybey some adjustment might take care of it? But super nice just the same! I'm not one to really get cought up in the body imperfections anyway! I'm more interested in the mechanical side of them.

@jesseduke694 6 ай бұрын
Oh I noticed your hubs? They look bigger than mine? Mine has the dana 44 front axle, is yours possibly the dana 60 front axle? I see u have the big radiator also. I would have to look into it to be certain, but I believe the valve covers u have are not period correct if that's somthing u are interested in. The valve covers for that truck I believe have smaller lettering & are boxed in. I can't rember for certain if they was used only on the 75/76 engines or if they were used from 73-76? Maybey u know what I'm referring too?
@stacks_and_setbacks
@stacks_and_setbacks 6 ай бұрын
I appreciate you watching and commenting. One thing that lets this truck down is the engine. It’s a 390 and not out of a 4x4 (front sump). And like you mentioned, incorrect valve covers. I don’t know that about the valve covers. Thanks for pointing that out. I’d actually like to pull the engine out and for period exhaust manifolds (going backwards in terms of power and economy), rear sump and like you said, valve covers. I just bought a rear sump for another project. Gee, they’re expensive.
