Les, you helped me get a job. On my interview with the director of IT, one of the questions I was asked was, who would I want with me if I were stranded on a deserted island, and my answer was YOU. He told me most people say their Wife/Husband. I told him I want to survive, not subject the love of my life to slowly dying because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I GOT THE JOB. Why I watch and like Les is because of him being authentic and not playing a know-it-all but clear „naked“. I may have seen some of his do‘s and don’ts somewhere else, but Les‘ target is to focus his viewers on the actual situation, its pros and cons, making it clear that survival is 1) is not easy, 2) treatcherous, non forgiving and 3) even pros like him are, can or will be subject to mistakes. Thus showing his humblness, love and dedication to being out in the wild, encouraging and not scaring off those interested or those active in nature, the wild. Sincere thank you to you Les, Steph

Nobody doubts Bear Grylls' ability to survive, but his show also doesn't show his 20 person crew who's standing behind the camera. Welcome to television. With very, very few exceptions, Les has always done it alone. No crew, no assistance, no craft service table filled with Redvines, lattes, and yogurt parfaits. Les doesn't give us a SHOW on survival, we're watching him actually survive. Bear gives us reality TV, Les gives us the real thing. Accept no substitutes.

I wonder if they’ve gotten any more cold-resistant? Back in 2007 in college I took a video class and well, it’s January and we had to go film something on our first week to get a feel for the cameras. They weren’t the giant pro cameras here, but it being 2007 they were still pretty chunky for a petite 18-year old girl to carry around. (No digital memory cards! All videotape!) ….so like an idiot, I decided to shoot out in the snow in the woods during a Canadian winter. I got a grand total of ten minutes of (bad) footage before the camera fogged up and shut down. Ugh. My future husband, in the same class, had the much smarter idea and filmed his own “snow” scenes in the backyard through a picture window. LOL.

It finally hit me: after his monologue at the beginning about his doubts, the dangers of the cold, I finally realized how insane it is that he can actually do the survival part while filming AN EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION SHOW BY HIMSELF. Or should I say the other way around, like which is harder for him? The fact that he's doing what he clearly loves or the fact that he has to carry about 2-3 cameras, set up shots, and then explain everything that he's doing, while he's busy doing it. He really is a total badass.

Watched your norway video, for others, and advice from a mechanic. Take the battery with you, rip out the cushions and padding makes great bedding and the foam is semi water repellent, the wool like padding is flammable, brake fluid takes a light well so does oil, if you can drain it, they also make great torches toxic so don't use it as a pure fire fuel in enclosed spaces, pull a bunch of wires out of the car to tie things up, make snares, and start fires, very thing wire can heat up real fast and set things like oil on fire fast. Plastic or the felt panels can be light, make good sleds to pull stuff with (so does the bonnet and its a pure water proof roof, bonnet liner is thermally resistant so if your roof liner, floor mats esp rubber can be good too. Check where your jack is, if you need a club or the likes can improvise. Spare tires or tires in general if staying near the vehicle are great fire pits to get the fire off the ground and breathing, just deflate the tire before starting a fire if you have to cut the valve stem, if you have a small hose or stick you can use its compressed air to help make a silvering fire take. Diesel burns great, esp if you have Styrofoam cups in it, it'll melt it and make it sticky, makes it stick to the wood really well and burns for awhile. If you need to melt snow radiator fluid will do it well but of course make the ground wet use common sense if you do it. Washer bottles and coolant overflow tanks are water tight, rinse them out and you can store water in it (washer bottle for drinking water, NOT coolant bottle, but can use it to store fuel, diesel, or brake fluid, btw can mix them together), jumper cables are strong and good for helping make the fire, attach to the battery, strip some wire put in both jaws of the jumper clamps, then touch other ends to the battery of its a thin wire it will heat the wire to red hot igniting most flammable things. If you have a cigarette lighter car one that is, put the jumper cable on the outside, then use thick wire (can cut the end off one part of the jumper cable, and touch it to the inner spiral ring of the lighter, wait till red hot now you have a reliable ignition source, the washer bottle pump and hose can be used (if you reverse the pumps plumbing) to siphon up water from low down places. I do alot of camping, overlanding, and was a mechanic and learnt some bush mechanics, I've broken down and had to survive in the Aussie outback so I've had to use some of these tricks and if it can help anyone I am happy especially of it saves lives. In short the car battery good harvest upholstery, if viable use bonnet as sled or hoodliner, oils burn well, use coolant tank and washer bottle tank to hold oils (or water for the later after rinsing). Rip out some wiring you have miles of it (litterally) in your car. Hell can even take a headlamp as a signalling device if you keep the plug end. Just hook to a battery. I'll shut up now sorry for the wall of text have more suggestions but no one will read this anyway lol
