Love the "rest of the story" bits. As a 20-year old kid from the USA I was solo canoeing in the Boundary Waters. Had a fishing license for Minnesota, but strayed over the line into Canada. While I wasn't sure, I sorta figured I was illegal - but I 'm out in the middle of nowhere so... Two mounties in a canoe came upon me. Gave me a ticket ($40??? way back when.) Just pay it when I get back home. They took off in their small canoe - they were FAST! I came up on them at a short portage around a rapids. They invited me for lunch! I asked them about their canoe, and they were on some sort of speed canoe paddling team.

I saw the “hand trick” when I was like 18 on Survivorman and have used it extensively while climbing and hiking since then. It works out nearly perfectly at 15 minutes per finger, despite having really small hands. What Les teaches is stuff that works and will help you-what other “survival” shows teach will get your head popped off, and probably sooner rather than later.
@EAHowe
@EAHowe 4 жыл бұрын
In theory given that your hand size and arm length see generally proportional, it should mean that everyone sees their hand as about the same size as each other against the horizon when their arm is at full span

@Asherah I could not care less. It's not a magic trick. And you doubled-up on "sleight." I think someone is trying to sound smarther than they are. And those aren't "commas," they're quotation marks. Nice try, though.

He holds the ire for the production itself, but I think he does respect Bear and his knowledge/abilities. The way I always looked at it was; Les showed true survival, that the common man or woman may find themselves in a situation like the ones he presented in the various episodes, while Bear (with the safety provided by having a crew with him), was able to do much more "ridiculous/outlandish" things on his treks. Bear was afforded that room for error while falling through ice, hanging from a crevasse, falling into quicksand, etc., which allowed the viewer a way to experience someone going through those things in the highly unlikely event they should ever have those things happen to them. Was it grandstanding and all for show? Yeah, probably, but I think it served its purpose and had its own niche, but I far and away preferred the style of the self-filming all alone TRULY man vs wild that Les presented for us.

Grown up in Alaska. I'm 20 years old, I've heard strange noises out in the rural mountains while hiking with friends. This low elevation mountain we were on is hundreds of miles from any city and about 10 or more miles away from the nearest village. It was late in the day in the summer, about 6 or 7 pm. My friends and I were hiking down the mountain when we heard a loud knock on a tree off in the distance. At first we thought that perhaps it was a gunshot several miles away, but then the knocks continued every few minutes or so. We weren't so phased by the sounds, but then we started hearing whistling a few hundred feet away off in the treeline. Knowing what birds and other common animals sound like, we were sure as hell that it was no ordinary being making these very human whistles. That's when we got freaked out and ran down the mountain. Never again have I had the courage to return to the mountain, but perhaps with a powerful firearm and a dog, I'd feel more secure to do so.

I saw that you are making the transition from SMTV over to here on KZbin. I suggested this to you a number of years ago and I think it will be a great thing for you and your fans. You won’t have to run and fund a network, you can put content up for free and it’s free to your fans. And through ads, you can have a residual passive income that you so deserve for your great content that you create. Also, with the changes that KZbin has been making, it seems like they may be heading toward something like a Netflix type network themselves. This should put you in a nice position if you are already established as a popular channel. Keep up the great work, Les, I’ve been a fan for a lot of years. God bless.

I have used my hand to measure the amount of sunlight left in a day so many times in my life - I've never been in a survival situation but just in everyday life it is so often useful and I have shown it to lots of people. Theres only a handful of shows I've watched time and time again throughout my life. Survivorman is one of them. Survivorman proves that production value doesnt have to be fancy in order to be successful. It proves someone can create a show that stands the test of time without a large crew, a script, or much more than a couple cameras. Undoubtedly theres still a lot of logistics going on behind the scenes. But the true hero that made this show work is Les' ingenuity. I hope more shows like this will find their way onto the tv screen and I hope those people will follow in Les' footsteps and refuse to sell out or give into network mogols. A vision, a dream, and willpower came together in a beautifully harmoneous symphony called Survivorman. Thank you for being apart of humanity Les. Bless you.

Les, everyone of your shows I watch I always think to myself about how TV was then and now. I was and still am into reality shows. Just comparatively speaking I used to watch the chopper shows and those were cool at the time but like the paint in your kitchen it gets OLD. Your shows however NEVER get old, and the added bonus is the wealth of information you share with us is timeless. These shows are priceless and timeless, and your skills, entertainment level, video skill, and knowledge level are out of this world. I'm older now, but now I share all of these shows with my family. God bless you Les, and one day hope to meet you. Believe me, you can't get any better entertainment than this anywhere!!!!

These director commentaries are really good. The thing that occurred to me about this one was the fact the ship called in to the authorities for a lone guy kayaking in a remote area and the 'sighting' of a Sasquatch, was the ship actually there looking for Sasquatch and was prevented by Les being there? It really seems to be linked as if, as I believe that Sasquatch is real and the authorities know it and try to cover it up. I also think Les knows 100% that they are real but he has to maintain the scepticism, maybe for good reason as he knows a lot more than he is letting on. Anyway, great stuff Les, been a fan of your shows on the internet for years.

It would be hilarious if you did a dual survival type of thing with Mr. Grylls! 😂 I am sure this is not an option for you Les but it would be entertaining. Im total Team Survirman!!! I bought your 20 year DVD set and it's the bomb!!! Love it! Thanks again for all your sacrifices for these videos.

Les, you are an incredible person, filmmaker and outdoorsman. I've loved watching you from the beginning. I don't watch cable anymore, so it's good to see you here on KZbin doing your own thing. These director's commentaries are awesome. Thank you!

Les, you were and still are an absolute inspiration to my brother and I who grew up in the scouts. You we're the guy we wanted to be when we grew up. You we're the personification of self reliance and our motto of: be prepared. Which through you I learned wasn't always about having every shingle piece of gear for every situation, (that's really not logistically possible) but rather having a creative mind to make do with what you have. And also the critical thinking skills to make those life saving decisions in times of duress.

I learned that hand/fingers to horizon from you, can't even begin to describe how much it has helped and/or made camping trips (or any trips for that matter) easier and more enjoyable.
