I’m binge watching your videos as I just brought my 8 week old standard poodle puppy home. I’ve had dogs all of my 67 years, but I’m learning so much. Josie is very smart and really enjoys using her brain with these games. Thank you for all you do for dogs and their humans! ❤

This is a great video. I have watched videos from trainers across the world wide web over the past few days. Many trainers use force or fear - or worse, electroshock. Others are more excited than the puppy and never get the puppy calm. You are the first that makes me think I can train our puppy (when we get it next spring) and that we can do it while preserving the dog's self-confidence and with love. I'm still not an expert, having watched a bunch of KZbin videos, but you have given me confidence and hope for success. Thank you.

Your videos are amazing! I got a puppy about a month ago and have no idea what I'm doing. I had a Shih Tzu for 13 years that I was fortunate enough to rescue when he was 2 y/o and he passed away several months ago leaving us heartbroken. Now got lucky enough to rescue another Shih Tzu who is a puppy and I need help. Thank goodness I found your videos! Thank you!! Are you still podcasting new episodes? I'm working my way through what you have posted here.

This is great! I love the emphasis on choice as the learning moment - and also the observation that it takes more thought. I wonder whether calling his name in the “I love this place!” game could be confusing for him? When we call a dog’s name, we generally want him to come to us, but in the progression we move further away from the bed, and we are asking him to go to a special place instead. I wonder whether using something like “Settle!” or “Bed!” etc., works better in this game?

I think I broke my new puppy on the fourth day. Your resources are amazing and I have signed up for crate games and I'm watching my way through your puppy playlist on KZbin. He played the first three puppy games really well yesterday. Today I started him on a puppy schedule as per your suggestion. For the first time I leashed him to potty (grass pad, condo) and re-created him twice for 10 minutes since he didn't poop. Finally thought maybe he won't poop until he moves around. So I started with the puppy games again. He may have learned the one about "this place is awesome" (his bed), because today I can't play the games because he is afraid to leave his bed. I finally sat beside him and left a training treat trail, which got him to leave his bed for short period. When I moved the bed out of play, he hid behind me. I've done something in trying to train him that has broken his confidence, which is horrible. He was a super happy and confident puppy until now. Any advice?

Hi Silvia, welcome to Crate Games! We're so happy to have you and you puppy here. If your dog finds more value in staying in the bed than to leaving you can "reverse the value" with higher value rewards for leaving the bed than for going to it (this is part of Crate Games). There are lots of podcasts where Susan talks about building your dog's confidence, so here's one to get you started: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKvUe5qKacmMeJI

I now know about the cycle sleep > out > training/food > out > alone time > out > sleep and watched some of the puppy podcasts. So far I haven't come across enrichment during alone time. Is this (enrichment) something Susan reccomends for a puppy? Or maybe enrichment should always be incorperated in training somehow? With enrichment I mean stuff that can be thrown into a playpen inside or outside for the puppy to be busy with (under minimal supervision). For example a whole cabbage, a pool filled with balls, a box filled with straw, a tub filled with smelly items from outside (rocks, wood, etc.), a snuffle mat, a filled kong etc. If there are any videos on enrichment suitable for puppy's, that'd be perfect.
@DogsThat9 ай бұрын
Hi! Susan does different types enrichment and she also recommends Puppy Bombs (kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3PZln2bZ6hlmqM) Here's the video about the different toys, including those for enrichment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZS2hXxslr2dpMk
@theamziss9 ай бұрын
@@DogsThat Thankyou! Good to see Susan also reccomends enrichment activities that can be done by the puppy alone. Sometimes there's so much pressure that everything (food, toys, sniffing, permission, activities, etc.) needs to come through 'me', the owner, that I get a bit intimitated. It's nice to also mentally distance yourself from the puppy for a few hours, while not having to worry wether you're doing something right or wrong. Just an activity for the pup to do alone while you rest or do focus on something else.

I'd love to see working these games with a high drive adult dog with minimal to no training history and focus. As well as what your goals would be for an adult dog just starting these games versus a puppy
@railNtrail093 жыл бұрын
I used crate games many many years ago for our adult rescue that had EXTREME separation anxiety. She went from breaking teeth and toes and ripping up anything she could get her mouth on (she chewed through a pet taxi) to being able to relax in the crate when we were home and she'd voluntarily sleep in it at night. They really do work for ANY dog\puppy!

How do you indicate that the games are over so you can get things done? My older pup is busy and loves engaging in games, but is at the age where his endurance is longer and if there aren’t any games going on or when they end he is looking for stuff to do. I guess the question is, how to switch to management mode where he isn’t frustrated by confinement? Bones, stuffed Kongs, puzzle toys and such keep him busy just so long, and then he’s fussing and wants out. I never let him out on demand but once he’s out I’m either a slave to playing games or he’s back to investigating and usually getting in trouble 😮

Hello! Hey, new subscriber here!! (I have listened to two of your podcasts today). Our 16 week old puppy (blackmouth cur) needs lots of training! Our biggest problem is that she is not food or treat oriented at all! Believe me, we have tried so many treats and nothing entices her. Yes, she will eat a treat, but if she has a choice of eating a treat or biting my wife, she will choose biting my wife. And that goes for any of the attempted training that we have tried. I put her breakfast out this morning at 7:15, and she finally got around to eating it at 9:45. What can we do to 'reward' her as we train???

Only way to get my dog to do anything is with chopped up meatballs and how he won't eat his kibble 😵💫
@kelleywyskiel8513 Жыл бұрын
That’s so funny. I used a different but super loved puppy food in all my pockets while training all day and then mixed what was leftover with her kibble at feeding time at the end of the day. So you might hand mix some of the meatballs into the kibble during feeding time. It could work. Or just start feeding your dog meatballs for dinner 😂 I’ll admit I’ve made a weeks worth of meatballs just for the dogs dinners before. They have a base kibble and I variate between a couple of tablespoons of canned, raw, or cooked toppers.
