I'm really looking forward to this. My current 17 weeks old Rottweiler puppy is the most bity puppy I ever had. He came from a litter of 11, stayed with the breeder for 11 weeks, and was 3 weeks together with the most agitated sibling of the litter. My puppy of course is teething right now. He also dislikes me giving my attention to somebody else, for example when answering my telephone. I live alone with my puppy, who is going to be trained to be my certified PTSD service dog. So my puppy Thorssàl nibs and bites for different reasons. My former Rottweiler service dog only bit on his biting bones and never ever ruined anything. So of course I'm kind of spoilt. As Thorssàl and I am close together 24/7, with nobody else around, I'm looking forward to your videos. BTW I never ever had a puppy discover our home by himself. This puppy also is at home on the leash, which was very helpful to get to k ow each other and to do the potty training, because I could react right away. The only time my puppy is without leash at home, is when we play certain games. We also go to our dog sports club twice a week, where he is without leash, and I let him run free in certain areas daily on our two longer walks. The funny thing is, that m, puppy always stays by my side when not on the leash. Only if I throw a toy for him to retrieve, will he run farther away, as long as I don't throw the toy too far. Thorssàl also does great with playing by himself with his toys, but he only has two or three toys to choose from at the same time. At the moment I am trying to teach my puppy to not bite into the leash outdoors or in my hands and clothes. Also I want to teach him not to jump at everybody, as he is growing bigger now and because he is really big, people start to feel intimidated by my boy. My puppy relaxes instantly when I give him the command for sleeping, and I also can tell him to be nice. But he only follows this command when around children. When there are no children around, he won't follow this command so perfectly. He surely understands what he is not supposed to do, because in training sessions he also follows the commands perfectly. Just outdoors worth the leash and with adult people will he nib and bite, and also jump. 😮

I have a 14 week old, 35lb, Labrador. He's doing pretty good at bite inhibition in general situations and will pull back or start licking after a few nibbles. In the collar grab training game he does good as well. However, if he wants something that he can't have he will really start snapping and biting at clothes or whatever. Jumping up to try and steal it. If waiting at puppy gate at stairs at dinner time (ate just 2 hrs earlier) where he is required to sit by his choice before I open gate, he won't settle and sit and starts jumping at me at biting, grabbing clothes, etc. If I try to do collar grab at this point he snips at me. I don't yell at him, I try to stand still, but I usually feel helpless at this point of getting him settled and not rewarding him by going thru the gate until he offers the sit behavior. I've listened to all your podcasts on biting and many, many others, and am in Recallers, but I feel at a loss when he gets in these situations.

Currently have an almost 14 week old Jack Russell- least bitey puppy I've ever had and I credit the schedule she's on and so many other things listed in this video. When she's tired, she's a barracuda but that happens once a week at most and when it does she instantly gets put in her pen where she fights her dog bed for about 30 seconds and then falls asleep. This is so valuable & helpful. I have a three month old puppy and he loooves chewing on my hands and ankles. I've been doing the collar grab and also focusing on holding him when he's overstimulate. It's been working good and consistency is key. At the same time letting him be a puppy :)

This episode was very helpful and reinforcing what not to do as well as creating a plan B regarding puppy biting. At the shelter I currently work at I work with the puppies to get them ready for their forever home. The current group of puppies came in at 8 weeks and a few needed to be hand fed. I sit with them in their kennel to get them use to humans. When a puppy in the group gets too excited I can get nipped. I do the ouch sound and get up and leave. They got Kennel cough and had to limit my time with them. Plus, twice a week they get bathed for a skin condition. Yesterday they got fixed. Now, I will take one at a time and work with them doing the different games and puzzles you have covered. I will put this information to good use for my puppy I brought home because there was not room at the inn.

Susan, does this work with an adult rescue? I've had her a year. Demand barking is somewhat better thanks to IYC. This week she started mouthing to get her way. It first happened while playing fetch, after a demand barking/IYC ... She just decided to grab for ball, which was in my hand which I tented, but when I uncovered it and put in the chuck it, as one arm came back down across my torso, she made a grab for my arm. My forearm was in her mouth, she quickly released, almost like dogs do when play nipping one another. I made note of it. Then last night at dinner, another IYC , she didn't wait as usual and mouthed my arm again. Show had been a few feet away, but move quietly, and I wasn't able to reverse direction and remove the food. I did take her by the collar, to get her out of food dish and put her in the hot spot. Waited a minute or two, then presented the food in IYC fashion successfully.

Hi Susan. I have watched a few of your videos and I am going to try all your techniques. I sighed when you said at least by 12 to 14 weeks. My Australian Shepard / Husky girl is 18 weeks today. She bites hard and then she will continue to keep nipping and biting. I am sure some of this is learned. I did try the freeze, but she wouldnt let go and it hurt. I keep trying different techniques and I had a trainer, but he worked on really basic training. Nipping was one of them, but she took it as a game, SO I stopped what he recommended. Which was holding her by the scruff. It worked the first 2 times and then it was a game. And now I am going to be honest. When she gets to be too much, I put her in her crate, which I hate doing to her. I cant get anything done because she will even come over and start biting me when I DO try to have some down time. It does break my heart to constantly do this to her. Anyhow I could use advise and maybe you have a good video. I want to see us both happy.

I have an almost 12 week old spaniel pup …he was having really bad “witching hour”’s in the evening especially the first week I got him. I had a schedule where I would walk, play and train him every day so I felt that he was getting enough exercise and play and training. I did a number of different things that so far has seemed to help. Also keep in mind that a pup in a new home for at least the first week will have higher cortisol levels due to the stress of being in a new environment. I cut back on his play, train, and walking by a little bit..half hour a day total, is what I cut out. I also played fetch with him more than tug and when I do play tug I let him do the tugging, I do not get aggressive with the tug toy at all unless it’s just to engage him with it very briefly. I also started the collar grab and scruff of the neck move with a firm, No! It depends on your dog….you can try different things and see if they work…I also gave him a couple hours of crate time in the afternoon instead of being penned up in the kitchen. I was concerned that he wasn’t sleeping enough. When he gets really bitey at night, close to his bed time, it’s then time to go to bed in his crate. I do need to work on getting him to relax though as I need to trim his nails and clean his ears. Hope this helps someone….

I also have an 11 week old spaniel, my biggest problem is the my pup tends to bite my 30 months old spaniel. The older dog does not respond except by moving his head away. Yep! Just like human babies, they investigate stuff with their mouths! My seven-month-old Shepherd girl Sophie “gently” mouths my fingers and hands, and I can tell she is telling me, showing me, that she loves me in the only way she knows how to tactically communicate it that feels good to her … and (she believes in her puppy mind) feels good to me. At seven months old Sophie is so smart and sensitive that she gets a worried look on her face if I say “ouch” or “no” when her love-mouthing becomes a bit too over exuberant. Everything about her body language and countenance virtually oozes crazy love to please me. I am discouraging her love-mouthing the older she gets and the longer I have her … at this point - 3/6/2024 - I’ve had this beautiful girl exactly one month, so we are still in a honeymoon, getting to know each other phase. Sophie is going to be my Mobility/Support/Bracing Service Partner, and we are going to go lotsa places, and have bunches of adventures together! Thank you for the informative, educational video to help us on our way … Sophie says a big “woof” too! 😊

i find the biting is also from built up energy thats not used up. a tired dog does not do that, a dog bored and not enough mental and physical stimulation will continue. if you cant walk all that energy off your dog on a daily basis you need to find other ways to use it up. keep throwing his favourite toy across the yard for him to fetch. if your dog will not be near small kids of your own then i find attaching bungy cords to pull rope good way to make them really work it off. its like using resistance bands for body toning. i use the tugging game to help him tone his muscles and use command "pull" for times when we walk up steep tracks and im too tired to make it up, this comes handy that can just pull me up the hill. Please do not do this with your dog if you have younger children that will be around because dogs will need to adjust their grip on the toy and if they bite down and your kids hands still near it, its not good.

My last puppy went from breeder to vet and from vet to daycare. Daycare has trainers and dogs are too tired afterwards, especially if they go full time, to bother biting or other objectionable behavior.

I agree on format of issues of learning dogs. I never did at home, fenced and go out with leash to pee.I do have good use for, I first out or in door behavior and load vehicle with leash. I like the HOT format especially observing and what the dogs are observing still,I don't understand the leash idea for peeing/ poo training. I have my habits that are not consistent but I am slowly developing references with my notes. The training with bites are a owh! leave it ,or drop.I do have english bull that nippy pants if walk pace goes into dog trot. last time used leash handle for a communication to stop. The 7 mos dane, I call attention getters and love bites and testing me if I will bite back for fun.I have another 80lb neutered male that is teaching me how to control dane who is now entering hormonal male challenges and so far are best friends. After leash training walks in park which is extremely testing. The dogs get loose fun exercise at home in fenced area and do gut twisting run, bite and crashes sometimes I stop if get too ruff and neutered male makes his point who is dominant. The bull dog was a breeder bitch that was left in hot car and was resuscitated confiscated and adopted by me after being spayed. She is another challenge in that it maybe like a person going into menopause! The males even younger respect her but, can't resist pushing her with face barks, she has bit the dane pup. So far day 3 no territory pee/ po in house wish me luck.

And after I got Covid the first time, just made training impossible with just no energy for months. I also have a 12 week old pup (shiba inu), and he is the mouthiest puppy I have ever had. In general, his first reaction to anything is to use his teeth. He has very little patience and gets frustrated easily. Thank you for the tips, we'll see how it goes. He has gotten much better, but it is still pretty difficult.

My now 16 month golden retriever is pretty good about not biting in the house (she used to be a TERROR but this and others of your videos helped so much), but lately on walks she will jump bite. Sometimes there’s a clear trigger (like a group of disc golfers or another dog) and sometimes I can’t for the life of me figure out why it started. While I’m trying to figure that out, what’s the best way to react to biting on a walk? It’s painful and can get a little scary, but yknow I’m on a walk with her so I can’t quite ignore her or remove myself. 😂😭

Hi Susan, thanks for all your training and tips. I have joined Homeschool the Dog and loving the content. Our puppy is 18 weeks old and is biting even more than he did when we got him, especially in the morning and the evening. I wonder if I am inadvertently reinforcing the biting? He does not seem to like the collar grab even though we are gentle with it. He has plenty of chews. Is it teething? Can’t seem to reduce the biting.

Haha. Just rescued an 8 mos old border collie mix that had been living rough on the street. Since it's been over a decade since my previous dog passed, I'm watching vids to brush up. This evening, I saw about 4 or 5 things rolled into one biting incident now that I'm hearing them listed in the vid. She was tired because we'd just been walking. She was excited because we were in a new area. She was wanting attention because I was ignoring her and talking to a friend. She was hungry because dinner time was near. I have no idea what her background with people is. But she's super smart and I'm wary of accidentally allowing her to train me!

I’m starting this as you list..my 15 wk GS still has a memory of suckling, he wants your finger in his mouth, he also licks and suckles on the tail of the Kong alligator. His real bitey stuff is more excitement/frustration, opportunistic biting. I’m having trouble holding kibble to lure into heel position, he gets aggressive and knocks it all out of my hand. He’s got a billion chew items, was one of 11 in the litter. I pushed his last poop around w a stem, there was a bark chip in it..he’s like a chicken, he eats anything! My worst habit is reacting poorly to a hard bite by grabbing his snout, it’s just human nature when your patience runs out..

Good video. I liked that you listed all the reasons a puppy may bite. We have a 14 week Aussie Shepherd/Border Collie mix (we've had an Aussie Shepherd mix in the past) who is a little raptor gator lol. He is great in every way and has even been potty trained for the last 3 weeks. He is a typical puppy but seems to want to test me more than my husband. A lot of what I've tried that seems to work for others but he ignores me and just continues to bite after correction. The only thing I have found that works for me (he seems to do better with my husband) is putting him in his kennel for a 5 min time out. I give him chances to correct his behavior but after many bites, the chances are down to 2 or 3 lol. After 5 min i open the kennel back up and tell him to come out. Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't and just lays there and yawns at me which probably means he was tired 😄. He has no issues with the kennel and goes in it very well making no sound whatsoever. So learning the whys of biting and which it is we are dealing with is a big one for us. As you said, sometimes he's just being a puppy.

I'd bet your husband is giving the biter puppy firmer, immediate corrections when he bites. My 12 week Malinois "Malligator" has a huge biting problem. My wife just tells her "be nice" when she gets bitten. I give an immediate firm rap on the mouth with a "No bite!" or give the thumb in the cheek correction where biters bite their own cheek. Puppy rarely bites me, but is often out of control biting my wife. These pups adjust so well and rapidly to what the human allows. Our Mal is a strong willed girl and will sometimes bark at us semi-defiantly when she gets corrected for biting. It might translate like this, "Im a Malinois! I bite! It's what I do! Who do you think you are trying to take away my biting??!!"

My 6 month old Yorkie comes & starts mouthing at my hand & it gets harder for a short period of time. Then he stops & cries assumably because his teeth are bothering him so much. How do I deal with this? He’s not lunging at me and biting. He has a good supply of toys & mental stimulation activities. Remember, puppy biting and your response, is important to how your dog will handle himself as an adult. Our current dog (4 years old) will use his mouth/teeth on us when we do something he doesn't like (trim his nails). He will grab our hands with his mouth, but will not hurt us. A simple, but firm, "no bite" directive (as he heard when he was little) will cause him to start licking our hands. Remember, your dog can not grab you in any other way, so make sure the way he grabs you is appropriate.

Two sincere questions: Isnt a “puppy bomb” reinforcing a chewing and destructive behavior we wait to avoid reinforcing? Also, isn’t holding the puppy’s collar and stopping him from biting like that (which seems sound) a negative reinforcement or aversive? Removal of restraint for a changed behavior? I don’t disagree with the method. But trying to loop it into an over arching philosophical consistency.

Could you help my puppy is good he goes to sleep at 9 and wakes me up at 7. I let him outside and he goes to the toilet. We and po. I let him in and he has his breakfast. Then he comes on my lap and we have a little play and cuddle. But then he starts biting me and jumping up on back off sofa. I then but him down on the ground but he keeps jumping up because he wants to get up again. So I pick him up and then he starts biting me again. So I put him back on the ground and tell him no. And start to play on the floor and play with him on the floor. Am I doing the wrong thing. I play with him for about an hour and a half. And then put him in his crate for time out.😢

I have a 12 week cavalier King Charles spaniel. I’ve had her 3 wks. She hasn’t cried in her crate, toilet training is going ok training is going well (sit, down, she knows her name, recall all ok). She a dream. Only one thing she bites when I give her treats. Can’t win am all I guess 😢

Mine is not a puppy. Almost 2 years old. I've had him since he was 12 weeks old. He's fine with me, but recently, someone came over and he was crazy. He wanted to play, but his play was all nipping and flailing and going crazy. I don't have friends and I've worked from home since I got him. He's been the most challenging dog I've ever had (he's my 5th throughout my life) bc I live in an apartment so potty time means going down the elevator and possibly seeing over threshold distractions. He's perfect indoors when it's just me. We play, he listens, he learns new tricks, etc. Another element in our space, and he gets crazy. He does seem to stop if I use some sort of interruptor, but I don't want to have to interrupt all the time bc it doesn't last. It's already hard making friends as an adult, and I don't want him to be the reason to not invite people over anymore.

@jt4351 -I would gradually play the easiest games he knows outside the apartment (if you aren't already) as well, so that it is easier to distract him when you are outside meeting people, and that those other distractions become white noise. it will get to the point where, when he goes out, he expects to be doing certain things with you, rather than putting his radar out on mouthing on the neighbours and friends (chuckle). Funny little buggars aren't they :) Xx

I know it is a ton of work but i am looking forward to when i eventually get a puppy. I think my next dog will be gotten as a pup but i have a number of years to wait. For now my max number is 2 and i have a 11/12yr old and just brought home a 10ish month rescue (though my fiance is a cat person he insisted on bringing home the dog who has since decided that is "his person" lol). I hope to have my older one for another 4ish years but thatcould be wishful thinking since she is quite a large dog. As a side note my older dog's *favorite* treat is a toilet paper roll 😂

My 9mth old Aussie is still doing the bite . He doesn’t just nip he bites and I get frustrated. He’s my 7th Aussie and the worst due to my neglect. At 76 and puppy free for 16 yrs I forgot how much energy they have. I picked up a lot in this video that I was doing wrong and hope to do some corrections. I’m working with a cattle dog pup… seems like the “all” do a lot of nipping. A lot of owners of heelers seem to find this amusing… I personally don’t 😂😂😂 my heeler never gets too tired… the worst is the heeler kisses… kisses with teeth 😆 You just have to suffer for 7 months old 😆

Susan, if we "trained" the puppy that biting gets rewarded. (we didn't mean to but nothing else worked) how do we break that chain? We still haven't figured out the reason (most likely attention). he will be playing with something turn around and start nipping and bark/growling at us. Sitting still and ignoring him isn't working and anything else we have tried hasn't worked. Collar grab is useless when he has gotten in that mood. if he is on his leash he is better behaved, once off, completely different dog. I can't seem to get him to realize I am the cookie machine.

Puppy Bomb: I have adopted a 4 year old dog that LOVES to shred any toy he gets his teeth on. He also insists on eating what he shreds. Would you recommend a puppy bomb for him? He would love the food of course AND he gets to shred. Of course he’ll eat the tube. That would be better than the fabric, plastic and rubber of the toys he tears apart at least.
