I have 7 dogs that I just love, and really want the best for them, which means they have to behave, they have to listen and obey. I want to do this like you say, with games, fun, and positive reinforcement. Thank you so much for your kind and wise words about dogs and training. i feel like there is hope for me and for my dogs.

Love the ideology behind this training method - get the dog to choose to do what you want her to do. I try to do this myself with my dog, rather than force her into something, try to make it fun and engaging so that she wants to do it instead. its not always easy of course since she's very fearful and a lot of things are scary to her, but I think it works far better than force based training and she does seem to trust and listen to me (which she probably wouldn't if I was always forcing her into things she couldn't handle).

I have a wonderful 1 yr old Kelpie x stumpy tail cattle dog. He's actually better than I would expect at this age. We take him foe 2 off lead runs every day. He still tends to pull on lead on the way to the park, and he's very strong. I am keen on teaching him more just to keep his mind active (and mine). I'm against giving treats on recall for exactly the reasons you gave....he learns tricks quickly ....I'd love to continue to learn and bond even more with him.

Loved this & thank you. I shared on Facebook. I have a friend that watches several dogs for various lengths of time as a business. She's wonderful and lives all dogs. Just thought she may be interested in your training. I have an 8 yr old Shipoo who has a very stubborn side to her. I love her dearly and finally just got her to eat healthier and walk her 2x a day for almost 1 mile. She stopped peering in the house too! We live on the 2nd fl . And I attribute these changes to her having stayed with my brother for 3 mo. With his 2 dogs.;) I think you are terrific! I need help to become connected better by obeying me more..... Thank you

I just love Susan's work with her dogs and people. I am doing the training course at present with my dog I don't think i am doing too well. Busy...and then tired...4 dogs...2 ponies etc....I have so much fun when I stop and train...somehow I am still not succeeding although my dog is well behaved and always comes and obeys commands instantly.. or tries to choose what she thinks i want..I say stand..she doesn't do it correctly so I wait. So she lies down sits lies down says give me the treat. Stands by leaping sideways again. Her stand was so good at 3mths I have stuffed up here seriously somehow. I do get inspired. Sometimes the videos are so long that I haven't time to implement the teaching ...as there is work to be done. Then I have to try to recall. Recallers...brain is not great🤣🤣🤣

I am SO looking for a way to train my dogs to focus on me no matter what. I have 6 mixed breed rescues. We have sit, down, come and stay accomplished, but if a distraction comes along...FORGET IT! I so identified with the lady from Malaysia with all her rescue dogs. I hope my babies will one day be as calm and focused on me.

Started with the punishment pathway for a brief day and immediately stopped. Found myself looking online through Zack georges videos and found a trainer in my city to work with. After a few months working with her, She became my mentor and has been shaping me into a trainer. This coming April ill be starting the Karen Pryor Academy. My dog now has multiple awards in all ranges of the dog world

Hi Susan that was very motivating for me. I've had a wonderful rescue dog for 6 yrs now and I can honestly say I'm consistently inconsistent with training.ive been lucky that he came to me with very minor disruptive behaviours so that I've always said I'm so lucky he doesn't do "such and such" So I've looked the other way so to speak in terms of his "such and such". Because of this some separation anxiety issue have increased and now I feel I've gone from just focusing on pouring love into this dog to needing to train him from scratch. I hope I can take your course , watch the next video and start to implement the resources so he and I can take our dog/ owner bonding and relationship to the next level and he can be a bit more secure and less anxious when I'm not with him.. I totally get what you are saying but I'm stumped. Adopted 17 month old female Border Collie who was not socialized or trained. (Raised two BCs from puppyhood, so have some experience). Believe she was crated a lot. Extremely high drive. Ranges from Puppy brain with fireworks going off in her head to a somewhat calmer adolescent. After 4 months (and some mistakes) we are doing relatively well in some respects. However her recall still a challenge when she is distracted. Can't start agility until we nail the recall. Biggest "problem" is fear reactivity on and off leash if other dog invades her bubble. She did not learn the usual methods of telling other dog to back off. Instead she gets aggressive in a nano second with almost no warning. I don't have access to some solid dogs that can handle/teach her. Susan do you see a way forward?

I love your thinking. Sometimes I think as a handler I can't see the wood for the trees. I have a young dog who is a really huge challenge. Kelpie x Border Collie she is timid and I struggle to find that switch. I have done so well with other timid dogs by creating the 'drive' to do something and that has carried them through but with dog its been really difficult so I need to change something it could be my way of training, it could be my brain or the dogs brain. I'm a clicker trainer and I also use toys such as tug to reinforce. Love to learn more to make me a better trainer and give me more tools to help those that come to me for help with their dogs.

Hi Susan. I love your approach. I've used "Hope" in the past with our 8 month old border collie. I would enjoy our daily walks much more if he could manage the noise that we deal with in our neighborhood. He's obviously stressed and I am willing to make my best effort in helping him to become a great, relaxed, and obedient family pet. Please let me know when I can enroll.

Hi Susan, I've probably tried all 5 methods but we're into positive reinforcement with a bit of 5 in there. We have a strong bond but she's still not always making the right decision, which is always around going to chase the critter or run to her friends.

I recently adopted a lovely 2 yo mixed breed dog. I thought I would spend quite a bit of time training her but due to some physical limitations it has been difficult. She is actually a very easy dog and she makes a lot of eye contact with me. The thing I really need is a solid recall. She is great if there are no distractions but she is very keen about chasing squirrels, chipmunks, and especially rabbits and will not come when called. In fact, a little while ago, while on a walk, she ran into the woods after a "chippie" and came running back out with a very angry momma deer chasing her! I'm really hoping for some help. Thank you.

Great video! How do I know if my dog is coming to me because I have a treat (#4) or because he wants to listen to me (#5)? Could it be a mixture of both? I have called him off of bunnies, deer and a few other critters, but I can usually see him thinking about whether or not to listen to me.

I am really thinking of starting the course with my GWP but my only concern is - is it all treats based? My dog was doing great at the basic obedience course, but now at almost 8 months she completely ignores me and I am having a really hard time. Jumping, biting, pulling - where have I done the mistake?

I have a 9 year old Golden Retriever whom I love totally. He's a four times champion - Show, Agility (AAC), Rally (RAE) and Obedience (UD). But my obedience training is 95% lure based and I'm always concerned when he goes into the performance ring that he'll turn off... he knows the situation and he knows he won't be treated until he's finished the exercises... At his age (and mine... I'm 73 !) what can I do to change this? Or do I just wait for the next puppy and start fresh?

I have a 7.5 month old border collie male intact pup, having trouble with recalls when he has a toy, stick and when he sees I’m leaving and want to put him in his crate. Started crate games with him at 4 months in a wire crate, he caught his back paw in the bottom when he was coming out ☹️ so he has been fearful going in and out but will go in on his own. Should I restart the crate game ? Then the recall playing with a toy, he loves to tug, just will not bring it back ? Please help me!

I started training in obedience about 35 years ago. Then I met the husband and everything went down the drain. Boy I wish it hadn't. I wish I had never stopped working with dogs the animal I love the most . I went back to it briefly with my beloved Jack Russell but it was a manners class and she was so frightened of everything we just kept taking manners classes hoping that she would get over whatever had happened to her in her past. She is a puppy mill rescue. She has changed drastically over the past 8 years and is the love of my life. She is so loyal and loving and we go everywhere together. I just brought home a Toy Fox Terrier puppy that the mother dog wouldn't have anything to do with and I know that I need to get her into a puppy class otherwise I think that she is going to be a monster because of the lack of important training and nurturing being with the mother and siblings would have given to her. I just decided to start watching these videos because of her and I was thinking about working with her like I used to years ago. Wow! Has the methods of training changed. But I believe for the better except I don't understand the #3 technique and that is of Training using punishment for control! Maybe I am jumping in to the middle of everything and need to start from a different place. I thought that punishment went into to trash years ago and positive reinforcement was the way to do it now? Have I missed some very important part of this training method or am I misunderstanding the question above with the five pathways? I must be. I can't imagine that bringing back the negative would bring any good results in training a dog or puppy. I won't use punishment that is for sure. Thank you so much for offering these videos to relight the fire in my heart that has burned out so many years ago….

my dog has mostly been trained through Zak George's Training rEvolution videos. she's extremely smart (APBT mix), and picked up "sit pretty" in literally one 5-minute training session. I've always been really good with animals though, and trained a wolf hybrid all of her commands in French using only kibble when I was in 7th grade. I read somewhere once that training in another language will keep the dog from getting desensitized to the command word. My current dog though, Luna, the one who learned Sit Pretty so fast, is maybe a little /too/ smart. she's an absolute lunatic (no pun intended) when we're not training, and I can ask for a sit 20 times without any kind of acknowledgement from her. however, when I even touch a bag of treats or her ball, she's putty in my hands (I don't actually have to pick it up, as she thinks merely touching it makes it be in my hand). how do I capture that focus without rewards? I've never had this much trouble weaning a dog off of treats before :(
