Wow, those plants have done so well for the first year in your pollinator garden. Very pretty indeed! I'm all for making my lawn area smaller too. If you need something that grows tall (but it needs trellising of some sort), Purple hyacinth beans also bring in tons of pollinators and the hummingbirds love them. I really love watching your garden videos, so packed with wonderful information. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful! Those two borders harmonise so well together. - My tip to you - try to go out and take photos on an overcast day. When the light conditions are less harsh, it's easier to convey the depth of colours. Looking forward to seeing how this all matures.

Unfortunately, the weather doesn't always cooperate when it's time to shoot my videos! But I do know that overcast conditions are the best.

I admire your restraint in spacing those plants! I would have had them piled on top of each other from day one.

It wasn't easy, but boy did they all grow!

You doing a pollinator garden encouraged me to do one as well but starting much smaller footprint. Susan I love all your gardening hints and my father and I have grown much closer helping each other with flowers, raised beds, hoop houses and giving back to our birds and bees. Next year is plans for each of us doing a pollinator house! Thank you again for all your blogs, newsletter, and videos! Keep it coming. Congratulations on your flower bed! Looks awesome. Will continue to follow you. Thanks again.

Hi, Linda. Thank you so much for such a wonderful note! I really appreciate it and love hearing how you and your father are enjoying gardening together. That is fabulous. I'm excited to hear that you're growing a polinator garden. I don't expect everyone to do one on the scale of ours (or even larger), because everything helps. Thank you again. Take care.

Lovely pollinator bed. I will have to try some of your suggestions, especially those unusual milkweed varieties. My best pollinator this year was a new plant for me: Dragon Head (AKA Moldavian Balm). The bumblebees were all over it.

Hi Susan I can't believe that in such a few months your pollinator garden it's looking so full I just love it❤️❤️❤️ All your hard work has really payed off and I can't wait how it would evolve over time! I have never seen some of those Asclepias varieties do you have a link as where can one obtain seeds?? I haven't checked your blog yet maybe it's in there?? Thanks 🦋🐝🐞🦋

Great video, Susan! So calming it could be scientifically proven to lower blood pressure! I have seen articles online with titles such as “Never Plant These Perineals” or “You’ll Rue the Day You Planted These Popular Plants.” Of course these type articles are click bait and the main point when you read them is that if you start with a nice mix of flowers like you have, over time one variety takes over the bed. Once this bed is pretty well established, what is the work load year to year to keep the varieties consistent and is there a problem with not thinning regularly? I started a pollinator strip this year with many annuals, but also included calla Lillie’s, Dahalias (sometimes hardy here) lupine and lantana and am letting the annuals self sow. I am hoping for something other than just zinnias and cosmos next year, but I guess experience is the best teacher. I have noticed more humming birds this year but about the same number of bees and butterflies over all, although the bees did seem to find us earlier this year than past years. Unfortunately mosquito spraying is increasingly popular here.
@SusansInTheGarden5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Danielle. Thank you for your note. That is discouraging about the mosquito spraying. But otherwise, I'm delighted about your pollinator strip. Since this is the first year, it's hard to know how everything will play out. I'm sure I'll need to "supervise" the ones that reproduce like crazy, though! I intend to do more updates on the bed next year so we have some continuity. Thanks again.

Beautiful. One question, how do you keep the weeds and grass from crowding out the flowers?
@SusansInTheGarden4 жыл бұрын
I weed the bed every now and then. We also have a metal edging between the lawn and the pollinator bed.

Beautiful. Did you install irrigation in the bed?
@SusansInTheGarden5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kim. My husband put sprinklers in at 3 points along the back side of the bed, and I've been trying to be careful not to planting anything tall in front of them!

I see very few butterflies of any kind here by the Port in Tacoma, I have read that 90% of our Monarch population has disappeared in WA state, fortunately, bees of all types and other flying insects make up for the lack of butterflies here.
@SusansInTheGarden5 жыл бұрын
We have a few butterflies here but not as many as I think there should be.
