Try planting a length of hemp twine in the bottom of the gutter a bit longer than the gutter so it hangs one end. Pulling twine this to get them started when putting in the beds.

I’m planting peas outside this year, because it’d be a late start for me to do the gutters. But I’m sold !!! Next year, it’s all about the gutters. And, it just so happens that I have un-used gutters sitting out in my workshop. They’ve been sitting there for six years with me thinking that ‘maybe someday’ I’d find a use for them. Already excited about putting them to work next year. Thank you soooo much.

I’ve done this for the past two years (after seeing one of your earlier videos!) to keep the seeds away from the RATS that travel through our garden at night. They will dig up the seeds and eat them, leaving a huge mess...and no peas! Thanks for sharing this tip, I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it.

This method could be also called 'shaken peas' 😄 Great technique and gorgeous healthy looking peas! It was nice to see Bill and You working together, thank you for the video. 🤗 I will have to look at it again after work to understand how to make that trellis, I like it! Greetings, Judit 🤗
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hello, Judit! Yes, I did have to do a bit of shaking! I think I forgot to hold my end of the gutter higher, then maybe they would have come out more quickly. But they did require a bit of coaxing. Yes, Bill prefers to be behind the camera rather than in front of it but I'm so glad he decided to help because he does that lattice way better than I do!

Interesting idea, I thought peas don't transplant well? You have good luck with them obviously, sure a neat way to plant. If everything were that easy. Now off to watch the 1st episode. Thank you for sharing Susan.
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Diane. Before I stumbled across the gutter pea method, I used to start my pea seedlings indoors in individual cells. While transplanting them into the garden was tedious, I never lost a seedling so they do transplant well.

Susan I didn't catch you saying drilling holes in the gutter. Perhaps raising the gutter up on one side works to drain excess water out the other end if you leave a seam open at the end cap. Or did you drill holes?
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I don't drill holes in the gutters because I have cardboard end caps that permit excess water to drain out them, although I'm careful about not overwatering, too.

That was amazing. I am new to your channel and would love advice to first time gardeners. Any advice on growing lights? Would be very helpful. Thank you.
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Lucy. It's nice to meet you. LED lights are the most efficient and longest lasting. It's important to keep the grow lights just a couple of inches above the tops of the seedlings so they don't stretch toward the light. I don't know if you're familiar with Joe Lamp'l but he has an excellent podcast. He had a show specifically on grow lights, here's a link to it: joegardener.com/podcast/science-lighting-plants-indoors-leslie-halleck/.

Great video Susan, can you tell me how far apart you seeded the peas?
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ann. Each gutter had a double row, and within each row, the seeds were about 1 1/2" apart. You would think that's too close but they grow great!
@donnahatch63143 жыл бұрын
It seems like in one of your past gutter pea videos you criss-crossed your garden sticks so they were on each side of each row of Peas and then you put a long stick down thru the center of it & used twine to put it all together. In this video you just put the sticks down one side of the row. Does the way you did it in this video work better than the other way?
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Donna. Each of the methods I've used over the past 3 years have worked great. This year, I repeated the same style that I used in my first year of doing gutter peas. And that method worked just fine. So the supports are on the outside of each row. Once their little tendrils start grabbing onto the supports, we are good to go!
@Gepajay3 жыл бұрын
The gutters does it has hole on the bottom
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
No holes. Since I use cardboard on the ends to prevent the soil from falling out, excess water can easily drain out through there.

Hey there....Just wondering why you struggle so much weaving the branches.....just put ithe first row in the soil, then weave the next from top and down into the siol, you'll finish in no time...another tip is that you can soak them in waterfor like a day and they will bend more easier....stay safe both of you my dear garden friends....Thomas, Denmark

Awesome! I’m in zone 6a and have started hardening off onions I started from seed. The weather took a nosedive in the middle of doing this so do I start over? I was on day 6 but they’ve been back inside for a couple of days.
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Onions are very hardy so I think 6 days of hardening off is sufficient and you should be able to plant them in your garden shortly.
