Wow! Absolutely gorgeous. I agree about the two types of daisies: Gloriosa daisy is a big favorite of mine. Shasta daisies are pretty, but they tend to take over. I also need to cut back mine in my much smaller 1/4 acre yard. Cheers!

Luv your backyard landscaping. Gee, must have cost heaps to put in so many trees and plants, etc. Well done Susan.

Actually, we were pretty thrifty about it, to be honest... between purchasing saplings instead of large trees, starting plants from seed, dividing them, buying from plant sales, and so on. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Just beautiful! It's a full time "job" (even though it's really a joy) to meander around your property, deadheading here, weeding there, transplanting this or planting that. But just to sit and enjoy all that beauty is quieting to the heart. You and husband are truly master gardener, designers and environmentalists.

I'm so glad you did this. I recently watched a video where you mentioned eliminating the lawn behind your house and I wanted to see in more detail. We have flower borders encircling our entire backyard. Last year we decided to eliminate the grass and covered to entire lawn we 5 mil black plastic (regretting that) and covered the plastic with wood chips. We had had some invasive bermuda grass and more recently sheep sorrel (I think) and are hoping to get those under control. We plan to put Island beds in the center by cutting through the plastic. We'd like to include a fire ring and water feature. Your garden helps me visualize what it could be!

Just started watching, but had to stop to leave an urgent comment: Love this little tour with the stories, histories behind them! 😍 I also love the fact that you like and know birds so well. The second the the song sparrow started singing I thought 'which bird was that?!' and there it is up on the screen, which bird it is 🤗 Thank you for the video! Greetings, Judit

You have a wonderful playground. When we moved to this place it was sand dunes, sandburs which I thought were extinct and a house we can’t tell front from back as the front faces the back south side. So we call the gardens north and south. I usually only mow once a month to knockdown weeds and this year I haven’t had to mow at all with extreme drought. However, WE HAD RAIN YESTERDAY 🎉🎉 2.75”!!! Hooray! I tried frost cover once for shade and it was up on sides but it got to hot underneath. That pink hydrangea is interesting. The Lauren’s Dark Grape didn’t make it for me and will try again as it’s very nice. I chopped some of the red poppies down as they looked bad, but I want the seeds to drop so I left the rest of them. Is that what needs to be done? I had so many other poppy varieties like breadseed and I will have to try again. Those purple morning glories are everywhere here and we only helped that as we also thought they were pretty and they seeded everywhere Beautiful lavender!! I just cut some yesterday. Did you start them all from seed? I can’t figure out the variety I have and seems to be hardy-wish I had wrote it down. It is The Only plant that is handling the drought and heat. The native plants died. A trumpet vine would cover that fence, but 😅 they can get crazy. Sorry about the rose. I use burlap in winter now for tender perennials, boxwood and Alberta spruce. I know all too well about setbacks from environment and wildlife. Late frost this year and we are the oasis for deer and can’t grow Anything without a barricade and it does not add to the beauty. We have finally decided it’s voles in the garden eating lettuce and making tunnels as we started with gophers and had them also again. I’ve never seen a vole in my life and the sooner they are gone the better as they decimated spring bulbs. If we had a water feature it would draw in more pressure. I have a small fountain. I Finally had it with the hose and found the irrigation supplies locally in plumbing dept! I wanted to see it and ask questions and wasn’t able to do that online. IM SO THRILLED TO HAVE IRRIGATION!🎉🎉😄. I actually have time to garden! And a few days after we finished the north garden it rained😂 😂 just as if I hung out laundry😂😂. We haven’t had rain since May! 8+” down on precipitation in WI Z 5a. Can’t wait to do south garden.

That looks so beautiful. I wish I had the money to do what you did. Right now, I've left a lot of my property wooded and go with no treatment on my lawn space. As long as it is green, I let it grow. Where I live, ticks are a major problem so I cannot let my grassy areas grow tall.

Beautiful! I have hopes of creating something similar in our yard. Unfortunately, the deer haven’t read the plant tags that say” deer resistant“ so I’ve had some setbacks. Like anyone with the gardening gene, I’ll keep at it. BTW I keep a small branch in my little pond; I think it gives little birds a better chance of finding a way out if they fall in. I am inspired by your videos. 💐 Thank you!

Thank you so much. And yes, deer are challenging and they never read those tags!

Your yard is just beautiful!! Where did you purchase your steel edging? Was it easy to install?
@SusansInTheGarden Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We bought it from a local company here in Spokane, called Ryerson Steel as it was recommended to us. It's fairly easy to install, depending on your site. The soil in our (previously) unframed beds had eroded over the years, so we had some digging to do, in order to redefine the edges. We bought metal "pins" to hold the edging in place since there are a lot of curves involved but figure we can remove a lot of the pins once the new bed shapes firm up.

Where the trellis is thats hiding the shop, fir trees grow FAST. I bought 2 firs one is a turkish fir?? And a Norwegian fir both have grown so much since spring! I'll have to move some perennials soon! They are used for Christmas trees i guess but I stuck them there for visual structure. Also we have 2 sequoia trees in our yard that went from 8 ft to about 40 ft in just 6 yrs! ( I did not put them there!) And we have 2 japanese cedar called sekkan sugi ? I thought they were little yellow arbovities when I bought them but they too are about 40+ feet in just 5 yrs. Everyone stops and ask us what they are and think they are beautiful....the limbs grow up and the color is an amazing contrast for all the acers and blue spruce etc. No pictures on Google even come close to showing the beautiful shape and color of these trees! Your place is such a beautiful " legacy" property! I wish I didnt move so much because I wish we bought one property 30 yrs ago and continued to improve it! That just shows wisdom, constancy, patience, love and steadfastness! If I regret anything it is that we didn't do that! Seeing what we've done here in just 10 yrs is amazing..I mean TREES are such an amazing part if the gardens! I'd never leave here now because of the many trees we planted including fig and other fruit. And all the beautiful areas! You have so much room for more trees and paths....all the way from the trellis up to the shop! Gardening is amazing!

Thank you for your kind comments. Our biggest challenge is water, so we have to be careful which types of plants we grow and we don't want to expand the landscape any more, for that reason.
@KayLambert-h8w7 ай бұрын
Do you get deer in your garden
@SusansInTheGarden7 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Our front yard isn't surrounded by deer fencing but our small orchard, vegetable garden and backyard are protected with deer fencing (this video shows our set-up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2LGipl6mbyoZqM). The flowers that I showed in this video that you're commenting on really aren't bothered by deer so if you have issues with deer, perhaps you might consider growing some of them.
