Big thanks to the ship who rescued her. Very sad that she lost her boat and very fantastic that she still are alive. Fair winds and take care out there

The weather has defiantly been quite intense this year, prehaps worse than the original race. In general this has been a confusing weather year at sea. Many sailors have report too much or too little wind this year, the classic weather routes have not produced the classic conditions. Susie must be so disappointed in herself , I'm sure that lead to her reluctance to talk. She is probably blaming herself. I'm glad she says she has at least not lost her sense of adventure. I grew up sailing and racing the 32' version of the modified Kim Holman designed Rustler 36 she was sailing and I'm glad it keep her safe even if it did not survive. Expenses? I suspect DHL ,,a mega shipping company especially out of china, might have reached out to the rescue ship owners. Thank Linus for posting and I'm so glad we had a good outcome. Cheers Warren

We have the Russian entry Esmeralda here in Albany Western Australia for repairs. I have no doubt about the contestants bravery but do question single handed sailing in these size vessels in such isolated locations. Safe voyage to the few remaining contestants.

what a scary situation. So glad it all ended well.

Southern Ocean is no joke. I am amazed the gentlemen that won was 73, I'm 52 and I am never going to the roaring 40's

Wearing a helmet in heavy weather conditions in a race like the GGR is no guarantee that you will win but ; it may save your life . I am curious as to why they do not appear to have them as part of their kit , perhaps there is a good reason why they don't and if so maybe someone can enlighten me ?

Was her vessel ever salvaged?

I don’t think so

Neither hers nor the two others were salvaged to my knowledge.

I thought these type of yachts were good at heaving to. This or a purpose built para anchor.. It just seems a better idea to try and stop the boat instead of still sailing in 60 knots. At least she is still alive..
@CheersWarren6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rustie , heaving to in intense conditions is not safe. The best option is to sail as slow as possible down wind with a drogue off the stern and or bare poles. We think Suzie's drogue line broke and she accelerated down a wave , we will know more when she tells her story. Cheers warren

Glad Suzie is ok. Did she scuttle her boat or is still afloat ?
@SlowBoatSailing6 жыл бұрын
It’s believed to be sunk. It was leaking water from the deck and it either lost all power on 12-8-2018 or it sunk under the waves on that date. If it lost power it’s pumps won’t run and it will fill with water. Susie has refused to answer questions about the rescue and the hours leading up to it. She says she will type up an account.

Questions are often asked why people want to climb Everest. Well, there is no rational explanation other than because it is there. It is a part of our beautiful planet and is there to be challenged if anyone has the will. The same goes for the southern ocean. It's staring us in the face and beckons us (or some of us) on. It's our duty, as human beings, to take up it's challenge or we can simply look away and take no interest citing hundreds of good reasons not to go there but we all have the right to go there if we want. So, in my opinion there is absolutely no irresponsibility involved in having to be rescued when all reasonable precautions have been taken before going there in the first place.

There are 5 boats left from 18 does that tell you something.

I'm guessing the 2nd Golden Globe will be the last. I doubt that sponsors will sign up for another round after the carnage of the first two. It is a shame though, I would like to see it ran again but maybe allow larger boats.
@SlowBoatSailing6 жыл бұрын
vagabondroller I think Don McIntyre is largely bankrolling the administration. There are folks that have paid to sponsor, but I doubt they pay for the PR, office, and Christophe. Most of the participants have minimal sponsor support. Don says there will be a 2022 race, and I believe him. Don also wants to race in 2022.

Ah, well that's good news. Now to start my petition to allow boats up to 42' so that I can compete. Moitessier's Joshua was about that size so there is precedent. I wonder if I could hang out off the coast of South America and slip in amongst the leaders?

18 start; 8 drop out; 5 demasted, and 5 remain. "Continue to stay in the race and lose your boat." Wow - this all sounds like very responsible seamanship to me.

We are now almost one year later..I still have to see her giving a full interview of what all happened.. All her "non sponsoring" fans were following her because we believed in her , we believe in what she could accomplish... and yes we all accepted what the final outcome was.. This is the G.G.R after all.. But why not respecting your followers and give them a run down of what happened.. This is now one year ago..

Seems like you cannot get a view of her without a overkill of DHL sponsorship... I would think that they pay her very well :)

Tony Poulos I disagree, they are only sponsoring her boat. It's good to see DHL are still supporting her and not dropping her. Cheers Warren
