Even if you know the basics, make sure you stick around till the end of this video to see some sus chord flexibility! Also you'll see a freak video editing glitch that I'm leaviing in. I really don't want to re-render and re-upload this video as ugly as it is, It's just a huge pain to do that and means I wouldn't be able to repost this video till tomorrow, so enjoy the huge ugly error :)

Perfect timing: I was just this morning fiddling with inserting sus chords into a progression I've been working on, for some of that serene shimmer. Let me add my voice to the chorus of praise, Jake. One of the songs I've written, "Across the Field of Glass", makes heavy usage of suspended chords in the verses, and I think of it every time I hear an Asus2 chord now. Man Jake, you really make understanding theory much easier than any other teacher I've ever experienced. This one was somewhat rudimentary for me, but it was an excellent refresher and I definitely learned to think differently about sus chords. I agree with another comment about Rick Beato. He's an unbelievable wealth of knowledge and knows his sh!t down pat, but he looses me quite often. I'm sure it's my pea sized brain, but when I watch one of your lessons (no matter the depth) I'm instantly into it and I never feel lost. @YourFavouriteColor4 жыл бұрын
love the modal mixture over the sus2! Wanted to chime in and say that you CAN suspend half diminished chords which are the actual chord at the 7th degree. The half dim sus4 is a sharp11 sus 4 (B E F A resolve the E down to the D) and the sus2 is a natural 2 suspension, which means you need to travel briefly outside the key, but still really beautiful(B C# F A resolving the C# up to D). Usually they sound like 2 chords for a secondary dominant minor key, but suspended diminished chords (especially half diminished)are under-used and have so many wonderful applications! PS I understand that enharmonically, suspended diminished chords spell inverted b5 chords and augmented 7ths and stuff so it's not as cut and dry but depending on function they can still shine as legitimate suspended chords. Classic example is in a minor ii V. Picture these chords as quarter notes. Left hand single note, right hand chords. (B A B C# F) (B A B D F) (E G# B D F) (E G# B D E) (A A D E) (A A C E) That would be Bm7-5sus2-bm7-5, E7b9-E7, Asus2, Am. You could name the suspended 2 chord just "Bb5sus2" but I think it's so clearly functioning as a suspended half diminished it's better to describe it that way.

Hey man, they’re actually not that difficult to use. Basically treat them as dominants chords, they build tension that wants to be resolve. The difference is that they’re symmetrical, you can build a new aug chord every major third from the note you started, so you can use them to change keys.
