The progressive springs are more comfortable for street use. they are softer when just cruising but progressively get stiffer as your driving get to be more aggressive. Linear would not be the best choice for street because of the spring rates giving you a rough ride....then add in poly bushings and your filling will be falling out. Race track are smooth so you are good to go. I added subframes to my 86 and what a big difference in handling. tightens everything up nicely.

the only thing I can say is poly bushings in the rear suspension, especially the uppers is going to make the factory splayed 4 link setup bind in roll even more than stock. initally it will feel good but once you start pushing it the rear is going to do funky things with roll bind. that leads to the car going into unexpected snap oversteer on hard cornering. Frame connectors, camber plates are right on first things to do. then good shocks. The C springs are pretty low, not sure on spring rates. I went down the Griggs Racing torque arm/panhard bar/tubular K member & control arms back in the late 90's for autox & open track. Have built a bunch of fox's for autox/street/track use. I remember the first time I drove it after the rear suspension/torque arm/panhard bar install. holy cow it was a different car! good luck!
@GearHead704

Thanks Jeff for all the info. I was talking to Warhorse racing and he definitely recommended spherical bushings for the housing bushings over the Poly. Wow, you had that in the 90's. That cool and I"m sure it was a lot of fun.

"Budget" suspension LOL... I guess if you compare it to a full coil over system then yes! If I can add my 2 cents and recommend you a couple things: Add the Steeda Bump Steer Kit to your steering system, as well as a solid steering shaft (the ones that eliminate the rag joint). You won't believe the change in steering precision and feel, specially since you want to race the car. I would also consider the Eibach stabilizer bars, front and rear, as well as a rear strut tower brace to finish your "chasis" tie down. BTW great to hear your back is better!
@GearHead704
@GearHead704 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not a cheap budget for sure. Was already looking at the bump stops, but will definitely consider some of those. I may hold the steering shaft until phase 2, but I like the idea.

Awesome! I am auto-crossing my 89. I went with new edge front a-arms for the extra camber, poly bushings (have fun with those), spindles and the PBR brakes. Subframes are custom built with the seat reinforcements. Also a New edge 8.8 rear end with poly bushings - again have fun with those!

Linier springs are same poundage throughout travel, progressive springs start out softer and get stiffer towards full compression. Linier are better for repeatability in chassis tuning, i e same feel on every corner, no surprises uphill or downhill corners plus offcamber curves...

Personally, I'm using Maximum Motorsports arms and suspension goodies on my SSP Downunder (yes, I have a '88 SSP in Australia) to go circuit racing. The MM arms have poly at the front body end and a spherical bearing at the axle, to help roll articulation and handling. I'd also recommend you use the stock type arm in the top and use a panard bar kit to stabilise the rear axle.
@GearHead704
@GearHead704 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I never would've expected an SSP there, that is so cool! Thanks for the advice. I'm going to start working on this car again soon.
@dpillen140
@dpillen140 2 жыл бұрын
For the front, i suggest using stock sn95 control arms (longer) of not going coilover on a budget. They will get you more camber. Also, you want a ton of caster if you can. Also look into solid rack mount bushings. Tires will also be your biggest issue. Look into a good 200tw tire.. 255/40r17 fits on the frontif you have the right wheels
