What I’ve learned ages ago during my technical education is that there is one particular thing with ‘gear oil’… In many differentials the gears are not just ‘touching a/o pushing’ the gears teeth are actually sliding in touch with each other!! In those cases (so I was told…) one must stick to gear oil with ‘EP’ qualification…. EP meaning Extreme Pressure. I would imagine engine oil does not qualify as an EP lubricant…. So pressumably in this case the differential which is running in engine oil will not be fitted with Hypoid gears (being the one with the ‘sliding’ gears…) Peugeot used gearboxes running in the engines oil too!! (Peugeot 204, 304, and later the 104 and 205) On top of that for some odd reason on their older models (203, 403, 404 and maybe more) the gearboxes had to be filled with engine oil too, although being separate from the engine!! And one final remark… the older rearwheel drive Peugeots (again 203, 403, 404, and maybe more) had a very rare way of driving the differential!! In order to lower the driveshaft to reduce it’s intrusion in the passengers compartment it was fitted with worm-drive!!! Appearantly this involved a rare kind of Bronze part that could only survive on a very special kind of gear oil…. As far as I know uniquely used in these cars! Obviously using the wrong oil can cause you terminal damage to your Peugeot oldtimer’s rear axle… Sorry for wasting anyone’s time…… greetings, Henk.

What a buffoon EPA is not in the UK That's a United States pain in the butt. And we also have C.A.R.B aka California air resource board and they're just a big pain in the butt as the EPA is. Both of them work in hand in hand to make our lives miserable, threatening outrageous fines and jail time over stuff that actually makes engines run better and cleaner. Because the factory tune that they put in every vehicle is pretty much generic. If they let shops actually tune each individual vehicle to its area, it would run better, get better gas mileage and have cleaner emissions. But God help us. They won't even think about it. They rather find you and jail you then let you make something better.
@Jester-Riddle5 ай бұрын
It's those same two officious monsters that also keep production of Rickenbacker guitars restricted (and hence prices so ridiculously high !) due to issues with spraying finishes on the guitars (and basses, of course). They only make these special guitars in California, although they did consider moving the 'factory' when the air quality restrictions first affected them, however guitar building skilled employees on this scale are not necessarily available elsewhere ... So, double hatred from me ... and for many others, as cars and guitars tend to be shared interests.

I had a 1977 Ford that ran cleaner with most of the smog equipment removed and my carburetor tweaking. Had to drill out the epoxy on the mixture screws, blocked off the EGR and the smog pump, the cats stayed. I was able to drop the warm idle down to 450 rpm with the A/C running and got the freeway mileage up to 19 mpg. This was a 7000 lb curb weight station wagon with the 400/6.6L V8 and 2 barrel carb.

2.0 Ingenium engines are the worst creation that JLR have produced. Timing chain issues are the most common. A good friend of mine used to work for a Land Rover independent workshop and he said that they stopped even sercvicing them due to their design flaws. They would use the Land Rover oil and genuine filters but would still sound like a bag of spanners after the service was done. Many Land rover specialists aren't touching them too due to this flaw. They don't want the hassle with the owners saying "It didn't sound like that when I brought it here" . JLR have had a few issues in the past with crap engine design eg. 2.7 / 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6. Only got to look on the internet for their issues and it all stems from the crankshaft. There's a good video series on KZbin showing a teardown of one out of a Range Rover. I'll try and find the link and put it below. The damage report of the broken TDV6 is the 4th link. I do have a question about bearing shells and this kind of follows on from the crankshaft issue above. Spun bearings do happen as you guys know and I wanted to get your opinion on what the "Tab" at the top of the bearing shell is actually for. I think I've heard you say in a previous vid that they aren't a locating tab. Am I right in thinking this? What is it's purpose if it isn't one? Keep up the good work Issac, Lee & John. Always like your vids. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oX7Ug6lnZclrnKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJPHgpWFZcudhZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnbUoZ2mf6l5eKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2XdiXeBodB6ns0

When you talk about a pinto us Americans think about our version over here. It is totally different from the UK. Pinto .The one that was basically a death trap. When it was rear-ended it would either catch fire or explode. They even made fun of it in the movie top secret. You can google that and see the short clip.

Have you thought about creating a type of operation sequence for your various engine components ? @@TheBlibo yes i know the 4-203 engine very well, a lot were fitted to the Mark II Massey Ferguson 65 and some to the mark I Massey Ferguson 165, i dont know a lot about the Leyland FG, i called it the angle cab because the door into the cab was at an angle, some had 4 and 6 cylinder petrol engines made by Morris or Austin, the diesels were usually engines made by B.M.C but that's not to say some were fitted with Perkins engines which i would not be surprised at.

Why don't you use torque plate on top of the block when you bore them. ? Use die spray and 8 Stone Diamond hones. Rough out grit and fine finish grit. You will see the difference in the finish its a much better finish. With a STD bore gauge you will only get a 2 dimension view of bore with die as well easy to see all the high spots. You will find where the head bolts go through on the torque plate the die will stay there . High spots left in cylinder. Distortion will be where head bolts are. 600 /8 Stone cbn to finish.
