The French company "Leviathan Dynamics" is developping a cooling system that is using water instead of HFC as a refrigerant, it is also using 30% less energy than traditional air cooling systems.

I am sure, these guys do very useful things. However, as experienced person in this area I can say - the recent already achieved targets are 15X energy saving (EER 200+), 20X carbon emission reduction (water as refrigerant) and 5-7X cost saving (3D-plastic-printed device with 5 components).

If all you have is a simple fan and water, just put a large wet towel on your shoulders or back and let it dry. within minutes it will cool your body very nicely for low cost. works even better when combined with a fan.

2:15 That's the problem, the people who are responsible for causing most of the heating, as well as the people in charge of making policies are always rich people who have heaters and air-conditions in their homes, cars, offices, clothes, etc. so they never have to feel the effects of the cold or heat they are causing or responsible for ameliorating. Maybe if they could feel it, they could relate the plight of everybody else and be more amenable to dealing with it. 😒

A/C is not "inefficient", and modern refrigerant is not bad for the environment. Literally everything that requires energy is heating the planet. You breathing is heating the planet. We need to focus on the largest contributors to the heating of the planet : transportation, energy production, and ... Wait for it... Heating

I am looking at the VC Industry and HVAC innovation ecosystem, especially Evaporative air cooling part and just guest - what should be the tech and innovation level to be noticed by VC and visionaries and get a support and enablement to implement innovation. It strikes me as rather amusing that suddenly the air conditioner has become the villain when no one complained about the heater. I have three air conditioners that never get switched on, and at the same time, in winter I shivver because I don't have a heater.

This is a happy idea, but homes and buildings that blast warm or cool air because they were poorly built, dilapidating, or just plain outdated, will continue to be a problem. Cleaner electricity is still something worth pursuing, but tackling how to get homes and workplaces efficiently cooler is more than plant rooves and water pipes. :/ I feel like this Talk was sold as the full answer to the problem, but missing too many parts of the problem to be a full solution.

This is largely foolishness. Simply superinsulating all new housing, reinsulating older housing, insulated shutters, and instituting inexpensive energy recovery ventilators and whole house fans will cut cooling AND heating use and costs by 80-90%. Most solutions are far lower tech than you think. Simply putting awnings over windows will accomplish the improvements on energy use you discuss.

I dread turning on the A/C every year (typically in late April or early May) because my power bill jumps an additional 250 bucks a month, at minimum. There has been solar powered refrigerator units for decades now. The same technology that was used in early gas (not gasoline) refrigeration. The absorption cycle using ammonia works, is lo-tech and CFC free. This tech is out there and this lecture doesn't deserve to be a Ted video.
