The ocean is often thought of as a victim of climate change, in need of human protection. But ocean expert Susan Ruffo says that mindset needs to shift. From storing carbon to providing protection to coastal communities, Ruffo highlights the ocean's ready-made solutions to the climate crisis and asks: With more than eighty percent of the ocean still unexplored, what new solutions are waiting to be discovered?
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

After having lived on a sailboat for seven years and doing a singlehanded, high latitude circumnavigation that included both the southern and northern hemispheres, I have seen first hand the toll we are taking on the oceans including the over exploiting of marine resources and plastic and oil pollution. Very distressing indeed.

Many videos talk about “what if “ “what if”. I see videos with many views that don’t really give any answers. I’ve been converting gas cars to electric for 25 years and when KZbin came out I jumped on the bandwagon and started posting how to convert your gas car to electric to help people actually do something. “What if “ people watch these videos and actually did something? What if instead of talking about what we could do somebody actually showed how to do something? What if there was someway to show people that there’s more they could do then just talk about the problem.

This comment needs to be pinned to the top, well said. While I'm all about starting the conversations, I'm numb to hearing "the earth is precious let's save it".

I think videos like these are cool because they give us hope that we can fix the mess we've made. A lot of people have skills but don't know what to use them for, and a lot of people have ideas but not the skills to execute them. I fall into the latter group, I have a lot of ideas but no way to execute them. For now, I'm dedicated to learning as much as I can and live a lower impact lifestyle. Sometimes that's all we can do and that's ok!

Good ideas, the ones that cost rich people $, are hidden. Patents are bout and shelved. And a lot of times the inventor dies mysteriously.

When I try to help environment in a small way, like getting trash in the sidewalk and put it in my bag. I think I don't contribute on the environment. However, as I watch this video, it gives me hope. If we keep on helping environment in our small hands we have an amazing impact that we didn't imagine how big and important that could help us save ourselves.

Good speech. But now I can't stop thinking Bout the time someone took me fishing by sooke bc. A thousand fishing boats all fishing at this "hot spot" which would started to get littered by beer cans and water bottles by noon.

Indeed, so far we have only relied on man-made technology to solve problems on this earth. Without us realizing that the technology we use to solve problems can also cause problems, because basically man-made technology only engineered natural work systems that should. Climate problems on earth that are increasingly out of control are also caused by man-made technology. Technology can indeed make our lives easier but don't forget to keep nature in balance and not cause problems for life on earth. I hope that in the future the technology that develops is not only beneficial for humans but also can maintain the balance of nature on earth.

Awesome. Ocean is core part of climate change. So, we need to save the ocean. The first thing we can do for save the ocean is reduce emissions. Making little changes in the way we live can go a long way to reducing energy use-and carbon emissions. We need to save the ocean from the plastic too. I really hope people in the world care more about climate change.

It is written: Therefore, beloved, being warned of this, beware lest ye fall into the error of the wicked, and fall from your affirmation. 2Petrovo 3-17 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matthew 7-15 "And I saw another angel fly in heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. And he said with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour is come when he will judge; and worship the One who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water. And another angel, a second, followed him, saying, The great Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that made all nations drink of the wine of her fornication. And another, a third angel, followed them, saying in a loud voice, If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he will drink of the wine of God's wrath, which is prepared pure in the cup of his wrath; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment shall be for ever and ever; and those who worship the beast and his image will have no rest day or night, or anyone who accepts the mark of his name. This requires the patience of the saints, those who keep God's commandments, and faith in Jesus ”(Rev. 14: 6-12). And yet, it is written: Fear God and repay Him Glory, for the hour of His judgment has come, and worship the One who made it heaven, earth, sea, and springs of water. ”- Revelation 14: 6, 7. It is written: John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. And he who rejects the gift of salvation is written: Revelation 14:10 He also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is prepared pure in the cup of His wrath, and will be tormented with fire and brimstone before the holy angels and before the Lamb. And it is also written: For there is nothing secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. Luke 8:17. This world is going away and if you want to be saved, give glory to your Creator, repent! And this is the golden verse of the Bible: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16. Ecclesiastes 12 - 13.14 Let us hear the end of the whole word: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is all for man; 14 For every hidden thing, God will bring to justice every deed, whether good or evil. Luke 6:31- And as you desire men to do unto you, so do ye to them. God bless you!

This whole "we need to use the ocean, we haven't considered the ocean" idea ( which is the core point ) is complete bullshit. Yes the ocean obsorbs CO2, but it also makes the ocean more acidic and toxic to life. Using it as a sink for all our pollution is not a good solution. Yes wind power over the ocean should be used , but it has enormous engineering challenges that usually aren't worth it. Yes artificial reefs are helpful for micro control over the tides. But we don't need micro solutions for a 5 foot increase in sea level, we need macro solutions. She really cheapens climate change by saying " oh we are so silly we haven't considered the ocean guys! " Good grief
