Deer are a major problem to me as well !! planted Western Red Cedar due to shade and although they do not eat them the fraying has been a problem , best control ( apart from shooting ) is letting brambles grow around trees ( not what I really want !!) to keep deer at bay , when large enough I will cut back bramble to some extent ...it really is a waste of time planting broadleaves !

I have worked in the timber industry and own a piece of land with second growth, I have worked in tree farms and old growth forests. Biggest issue with tree farms is lack of diversity in species that leads to pest or infection of some kind that causes the harvest to be pushed forward or timber lost. Natural woodlands look nothing like a timber farm and in my opinion are a lot healthier even though you may not get the same board footage as in a tree farm where they maintain the trees and land more.

Spot on. There are some so obsessed with turning profit from wood, that they can't make a woods. Firstly stop planting saplings that get overcome by grass and weeds. Plant taller trees in good positions. Plant ground cover that suppresses weeds. Natural environments are not flat, trees fall and create mounds. The landscape that is flat won't support diversity as well as a bumpy landscape where shadow and water and is high and low in varying degrees. Not good for walking or vehicles but great fi diversity of ecosystem. Forests tend to evolve from grasslands to woods, and there are a number of stages that make this happen where different species and conditions exist. Typically we want to jump from 0 to 10 in one leap.

If you want timber at profit, you create managed forests for felling. If you want woods for wild life and climate, you build a wood. Different books.

Grey squirrels will eat a lot of things. The bark stripoing is a last resort for food. Throw food down, put bird feeders for them. It reduces their foraging and reduces vandalism.

are there options for stands that have heavy squirrel damage? Or is it best to cut your losses and replant?

Forgive my ignorance. Why is it not good to plant at 3 metre spacing? Thanks in advance.

once a tree is mature its roots and crown will use up that space any closer and you will lose efficient sunlight etc

"Sustainable dog-man husbandry" could also be another name for this video 😂 hopefully the dog-man living areas don't expand.

airgun and a tin of pellets will sort out the squirrel problem.

Don't bad mouth the grey squirrels 😂 I am joking. I can see how they make things bad for other animals.
