Trees are resilient and strong living beings, and provide paramount resources for our health, like clean air and biodiversity. However, to maximise their benefits we must learn to take care and blend them in our cities. In the past 50 years, many of the trees planted in urban scenarios have died. Why? because they were not fit for the surrounding environment. Thanks to this talk, we can discover a new concept of the urban forest, where our individual actions to protect nature can become a legacy for future generations.
Kenton Rogers is an Urban Forester, co founder of Treeconomics and author of the Haynes 'Home owners Tree Manual'. Since 2011 he has been focused on a benefits based approach to urban forest management. Rather than managing trees as liabilities, in the context of hazard and risk, as is so often the case, Kenton has been advocating for trees to be viewed as (in)valuable assets delivering many crucial public goods. Trees are the front line defence against climate change in our towns and cities, but we need more of them and they need much better care. Kenton has a Master’s in Forest Ecosystem Management and led the first Urban Forest Valuation in the UK. He has written articles and scientific papers on the role and benefits of trees and has presented to the UK Government, the World Bank and the UNECE on these topics. Kenton was also a contributing author on the Urban section of UK National Ecosystem Assessment and the Springer Handbook on ‘The Urban Forest’. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Fantastic talk, gives a fresh appreciation of the role that trees play in our lives... not just looking pretty, we have a friendly but silent workforce secretly cleaning our air, soaking up our carbon, and helping us to feel sane!! 🌳
