A solid Sustainability plan is the KEY to longevity after 40. You can’t “wing it” any longer. You need a plan for flexibility / mobility, food consumption, recovery, on / off the mat training, etc. What is your plan for a short term and long term sustainable practice? You didn’t start this to have multiple surgeries / you started your training to IMPROVE the quality of your life. If you need help developing a sustainable practice - message me! bjjafter40@gmail.com

Great video bro.... I find with age I’m getting more mindful and as a result more deliberate with the energy output for longevity 🙏🏾⭐️

I joined a new school over a year ago and started playing their game which was a bunch of younger, smaller guys playing fast, open guard. I recently realized that I needed to use my size and strength to my advantage and to dictate the pace. Now I'm back to my basic closed guard game that allows me to slow things down. At 52 and purple I do pretty well and I don't get hurt. the best advice I can give is play your game (not theirs) and tap often. Proper diet, hydration and stretching are important.

I am a huge fan of yours. I have been training 3 years. First years were 5-6 days a week. I got hit by a car while biking after the first year and had to take 8 months off. I used to love training but now I am in immense pain after rolling. I can at most train 3 days a week and my arm goes numb or my knee starts buckling. I loved jiujitsu but now I have really started to hate it. My inconsistency due to injury has held me back. I was really getting good compared to how I used to be. I was really high on getting close to blue belt then my knee blew out. Facing the decision of quitting has made me spiral in depression.

Find a rhythm that works for you. Maybe you train 2 days per week and use your days off to focus on recovery and resetting. I would recommend the “Knees over toes” stuff for your knees. (There’s tons of free content) Email me if you want to talk more about sustainability BJJAfter40@gmail.com -Mike

I'm just starting to feel that it's not worth it. The injuries and quality of life outweigh the benefits. It's a difficult decision but one that every jiu jitsu player has to make on their own at some point. For me, the constant neck, back, and leg pings were just not a good trade off for being marginally better at the sport, or even the same level. After talking to a bunch of PTs and longevity coaches I just can't support training at an older age, it's so hard on your body - and mind.

I hear what you saying brother but I would be careful of what you trade it for... as a PT/Physio and advocate of health I would say the wider array of stresses it puts on the body, mins and non linear movements can help the bodies integrity but your right you have to be able to train in equal and opposite ways.. be it lifting, yoga and also and most importantly know the limits of who your training with, you need partners that don’t try to kill you and are 30 years older and exploding into positions that your not wanting to be in... wishing you all the best on your journey brother 🙏🏾⭐️👊🏾🔥 whatever you do keep your head up and your heart open

I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. it’s not the case for me. I’ve created a sustainable path in bjj. Free from surgeries but without sacrificing my desire to train hard and consistently. Most importantly pain and injury free. I agree it wouldn’t be worth the path you’re in now. But there’s hope! Message me if you want to learn more. bjjafter40@gmail.com

I have a one on one coaching program the builds sustainability in a realistic manner. It IS doable at 40- 50’s and 60+. You just need the right path. I’ve been doing bjj since 1996. I’ve had a ton of injuries before hitting 40. My training has since adapted to me being 53. I have several clients I work with (out of state and even other countries) they ARE having great results!
