Sutekh's Downfall (Never Tell Me the Rules Variant) | Empire of Death | Doctor Who Unreleased Music

A variation on Never Tell Me the Rules. This plays as the Doctor brings everyone back to life, and all of poor Sutekh's dust is no more! This was one final piece of music from the latest season that I thought would be worth uploading. Murray Gold really has blessed us this season. There has been so many variants of our favourite tracks. From 'This Is Gallifrey' in Space Babies, to 'The Long Song' in Dot and Bubble, and now another great track from the Matt Smith era, 'Never Tell Me the Rules' in Empire of Death! Say what you want about the finale as a whole, but this scene is beautiful and the fact we get a massive callback to 11's regeneration like this, and flipped the script so that the Doctor is the miraculous crack in the sky while bringing back part of The Doctor's Theme that we haven't heard in 11 years, since the scene this scene is referencing, is just.. Man, scenes like this that can make me cry when nothing sad is happening are great. Just crying because it's beautiful, and definitely makes me look as 11's regeneration being a massive set up for this payoff, which happened, coincidentally, 11 years later. It all came full circle, and I love that.

@@dalliias Uh, not really though. It was an expansion of The Doctor's Theme that premiered in series 4. 10's theme is a toss up between The Doctor Forever and All The Strange, Strange Creatures, although I'm leaning more toward TDF there. I mean, would be a bit odd to premiere a Doctor's theme in one of the last episodes of his final season lol. The Doctor's Theme =/= A particular Doctor's theme. Think of it like how there's the Scooby Doo theme, and then a theme for each individual Scooby Doo series. I think the only time there's been proper overlap with a particular Doctor's theme was I Am The Doctor showing up in Twice Upon A Time. It's been 7 years and the choice to use that in the episode still leaves me a bit confused, although I'm definitely not complaining.

Yeah, Never Tell Me the Rules was pretty directly a continuation of the new part of the Doctor's theme from season 4, and while the 12th Doctor's theme is distinct it always felt like a parallel theme to that section. This moment was reminiscent of both as a result (clearly more directly inspired by that season 4 motif though).

Right at the end before he died I actually felt sorry for Sutekh. That part was good writing by RTD.

Love this song! Btw yeah, I felt a bit bad for Sutekh as well. Had he gained the Doctor's perspective on life from all those years of travelling space & time, perhaps the former would have strayed from his goal of killing everyone. Though the moment he acquired his Godhood, it's possible he rose above emotions & felt nothing from all the adventures since the Fourth Incarnation.

Probably not, and likely doesn't undo the events of the flux. My perception is that Sutekh basically created tonnes of alternate timelines, where he brought death to all those places and times, and when he entered the vortex, he was killing all those alternate timelines he created with his dust of death

I actually like the concept of all death being eradicated as Sutekh has died. It’d undo the Flux and the Gallifrey thing, and make for a good story arc. Or maybe it’s just me. 🤷‍♂️

@@ryanhasproblems For now I think they just brought death to the concept of death as Sutekh brought it, the lady on that dead planet said that even facts started dying so the Doctor brought Sutekh's gift of death to his own gift of death, cancelling it out. But a future writer or RTD himself if he wants, can bring back Galifrey or undo all the damage of the Flux if they so choose and use this moment as the explanation. I love story beats that can be repurposed for other story beats in the future. Handy tools.

Yea kinda, never tell me the rules was in time of the doctor and it’s a different arrangement of tens theme from series 4. This version sounds closer to the one used in time of the doctor so I see why they called it that.

Yeah and i'm surprised to see How many people werent more criticizing for It. Like seriously Russel left so many holes on the plot that i'm surprised people accepted It that easily. For example, why did it snow? Why was maestro so distraught with Ruby and why did she had Carol of the bells inside her heart? It couldnt be Just for the bullshit reason that they made her important, there's so much that does not add up.

@@minicle426 No he made the whole Bad wolf thing work, Torchwood as well. The missing planets were davros doing and the Evil prime minister was literally the master. Like Dona Said in the giggle everything had a sort of Sense, the bad thing is that Russel used the supernatural elements as a excuse to lazy writting.

The whole Sutekh was hiding in the TARDIS thing for years since the initial encounter was remenescant of Star Trek Picards ploy where The Borg were hiding in Picard's head all these years for Star Trek Picard Season 3 Plot. I didn't appreciate that then, and I don't appreciate that kind of plot NOW! You mean to tell me that The Doctor had a monster like that on the TARDIS all this time and it did NOTHING?!? Through all the season finale's The Encounters with Fendahl, Fenric, The Guardians, The Beast, it did nothing. Planting the Susan Triads all over the place, and we just noticed now?!? They also mentioned a planet from "The Tomorrow People" making a distant connection, but STILL, I think this plot went just a little too far!
