Here is some clips showing both the inside and outside of the Sutro Baths (burned down in 1966) and also the Cliff House. You will also notice the oddities scattered around the upstairs are now located at the MUSEE MECANIQUE on Pier 45 at Fisherman's Wharf (moved from the Cliffhouse in 2002). Some great glimpses of when the Sutro Baths were converted to Ice Skating and Roller Skating Rinks later on down the buildings history. Thanks to Anne for the clips! More info on the Museum:

Wow! Watching this brought back so many memories of being there as a kid just before it closed. I recall the steep stairway going down to the baths and all the interesting attractions along the way! 🥰

Great posting. This is the kind of stuff that makes KZbin great. As a kid my parent's took us Ice Skating every Monday after School. The third shot where he is walking by the kids playing games was surreal. I remember playing Goalee and the photo and voice booths! Loved the Maritime room with the scale models of clipper ships, watching the seals and birds through the binoculars. My Dad knew all about the collection of boxing photos on the wall as you came down. The toothpick carnival, and...

my dad just went in the police dept dec 16th 1956 and delivered the car for this movie. I watched sutros burn down that sunday in 1966. my dad arrested the boy-maget batch for the fire. I have a sign off the building from sutros. what a historical loss. remember seeing everything in this picture. jim

This is so cool! I lived at Mt. St. Joseph's Girls Home in the '60's and actually rode in that same yellow bus! The "Mount" was on Newhall, near Third & Bayview. That spot now is condos. When I first got there the nuns wore that black habit with large white coronet, but later changed to a more modern blue habit with much less 'dramatic' headwear! They are Daughters of Charity. We said we lived with the flying nuns! LOL!

OMG! I learned to ice skate there in the late '50s. I still remember the binocular room and the taking bird rooms. I loved the place.

Cont. My other favorite memories include the Tucker automobile (I hope it didn't go up in the fire) and General Tom Thumb's clothes from the P.T. Barnum collection. I never got to swim or ice skate there as the museum always captivated my attention. When I got back from being in the Air Force, it had burned down. 40+ years later, I still miss the place. I've been to a lot of places in the world and a lot of museums, but it was like no other. Sigh!

Cool to see the interior after Whitney (who owned PlayLand) bought the business and land from Sutro's son in 1952 (for $250K). He's the one who put the ice rink in.

And in doing so, permanently closed the majority of the complex to the public, which was a shame.

I remember when the Cliff House had that redwood decor on the outside when George Whitney owned it in the 50's. Also in this movie a SFPD squad car is shown parked right out in front of the merry go round building entrance on Cabrillo & the great highway at Playland at the beach!!!

As I remember it... Near the end as he is exiting, you can see a statue in a glass case at the bottom of the stairs. I think that was of a Japanese guy who made the statue of himself and then (supposedly) pulled every hair from his body and put it on the statue. I'll always remember that!

@Scottgross To answer your concerns about the Tucker auto that was at the museum. Almost everything that was at Sutro was removed before it burned.

At 7:30 you see two people lying on the skating rink. A man on the left in a black suit and a man on the right in a gray suit. I thought it was just the man in the gray suit and his wheelchair that fell to the ground after being kicked by the man with the briefcase. Somebody tell me why there are two people lying below instead of just the man and his wheelchair.

If you watch closely, when the guy in the wheelchair is falling he hits a skater. The other guy lying there is the ice skater.

Okay, how did the guy in the wheelchair get all the way down there? I grew up in the Outer Sunset, born in '62, so missed Sutro's. I love this film for all the City locations!
