That view down from above makes it look like a living breathing creature. Not so far fetched to dream of sea dragons, I can totally see why someone would be terrified and in complete awe of something like that. I hope you share about it at least a little on KZbin, unfortunately I don't have money for a Patreon subscription. If I did, you guys would be top of my list 😀 so glad to see the show coming back! This world needs as much educational experience and knowledge as it can get!

I know Time Team is a mostly Great Britain focused show/group, but I would love their style of documentary on the Dutch ship of Batavia, which was launced in 1628, and wrecked off the coast of Australia in 1629 on it's maiden voyage. there is a lot of story behind it, it's wreck, the aftermath, and, the entire ship was reconstructed using period methods between 1985 and '95! very fascinating stuff.

I've always thought a Time Team International program would be great. Go to different countries for 6 months at a time (or so) and do some digs. I'm from Australia, but have lived in a few different countries. Always amazed at what history surrounds you if you're willing to look for it.

The boat is beautiful but for me it's the tools and techniques that are especially interesting, the joinery and knowledge of how materials interact would have been an accumulation of hundreds of years of practice and the ship would probably been considered modern when finished .

Great news, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the documentary! Maybe everyone in the UK is already intimately familiar with Sutton Hoo and the ship, but slightly more context would be great for philistines like me. While I've seen the famous helmet, I don't really know what else was found at Sutton Hoo (well, I guess the remains of a ship) - I would have loved a bit more info in a voice over or as text on the video :)

Please watch this space for more exciting developments on the horizon. Many beautiful finds were discovered alongside the ship. You can also check out our earlier interviews with John Preston, author of 'The Dig', and Neil MacGregory, former Director of the British Museum, where many of these stunning artefacts are held today. Great idea, like to see it finished. But about Sutton Hoo, the Anglo Saxon king was buried there because of the stunning majestic view down to the river which has now been lost due to trees being planted blocking the Majestic view. You can see the new trees in the video blocking the view to the river. I bet the misguided nature lovers who planted those trees would not block any views from their own homes. Sutton Hoo is a National and internationally important Historic monument and the views should be reinstated and protected. Time Team should be suggesting the new woodland be moved well above Sutton Hoo so it does not interfere with the very reason the burials were there in the first place, that wonderful view that you can’t see any more.

I started to watch The Dig after seeing this link. I’ve a couple of questions about Basil Brown’s accent (as an Australian, I don’t know my way around the regions)… now both he and Ralph Fiennes are from the Ipswich area, but the character’s accent sounds much more like a south west rural (Devon/Dorset?) accent methinks? I’d imagine his accent was more chav-by-the-sea😅, meets “raffinement”, as he was self educated polyglot/polymath (according to Wikipedia!). On the other hand, perhaps they are reverentially reference Time Team’s own Phil Harding, also field/self-educated! please let me know what you think?

@bryanthesmith44413 жыл бұрын
When I was at school in the 1960's we were taught that Saxon ships had no mast or sail and were in fact very big rowing boats. There is now some speculation that at this time Scandinavian ship builders were building sailing ships. The thought stuck me is it possible that burial ships were purpose built to a traditional model for traveling to the after life, but the ships the Saxons were using to invade Britain could be equipped with a mast and sail. This as based on no research or study but just a thought to investigate. I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on the subject.

Hang in there. You are not alone! We will still be able to see the documentary when it is complete without the patreon donation and it will be up on KZbin. We just won't have access to behind the scenes as they are filming the reconstruction. That is what they are asking money for. TimeTeam isn't connected with BBC funding anymore since it was canceled so they are pursuing crowd funding for TT digs, etc. They will all be up on KZbin on this TT Official channel. Using crowd funding allows them to produce what they want without the suits telling them what to do. Another TT fan in the U.S.

I wonder who the oarsmen were, slaves or the warriors themselves?
@jessh53103 жыл бұрын
They were the warriors, Commited and incentiveised people who knew where they were going and wanted to get there quickly. Having spent time researching saxons and vikings they almost to a man (and woman) hated sea journeys and wanted them over ASAP. Many sailors carrying freight were mediterranean of origin even those who died and were buried at places like Bamburgh, (long story)

@jessh53103 жыл бұрын
@@rushzimi3865 . Probably not. It takes time to train people to row and you would not want to mess around going home with lots of goodies. From research they had very specific ideas of who they wanted to capture and what goods they wanted to steal. The vikings sold most of their goods to the far east so were probably stealing to order.

I think the experimental archaeology throughout the series successfully tested theories on the lifestyles and craft of people who lived through the various eras. It was honest and humorous! (Thinking of many failures in metal casting and Matt groggily schlepping as a lay brother, and not to forget the amazing skill of Phil whenever he sat down to knap flints!
@lacyoh80663 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy the experimental archeology aspect. Regardless, they are just going in to film the process. Additionally … they have done 2 digs this year so “we are going to” has been backed up by action! You could join over on Patreon and help with input there and get caught up on news. Those 2 digs will be released here on KZbin as soon as they finish all the editing =)
