Thanks so much. I appreciate that. I enjoy making them so it's nice to hear that you enjoyed it too.

After looking at your comparison, I bought a Suunto Core instead of a new Casio. This is actually my one and only wristwatch that is made from any other manufacturer then Casio. I'm pretty sure I'll be impressed and satisfied with the new watch. Thanks for a great vs.

Thanks, happy to hear you like the video. Both watches are adjustable for metric and imperial measurements.

Yes, that must be right. By the way, your vidos are absolutely top-class. Your level of knowledge is great and the way you explain stuff is extreemly pedagogic.
@nikudes11 жыл бұрын
It's based on barometric pressure. When you set a reference altitude, the watch notes the air pressure. It then measures the difference between the reference air pressure and the current air pressure to calculate the new altitude.
@nikudes15 жыл бұрын
If I understand you correctly, I think you're right. The Casio won't figure out what the pressure is at sea level. It measures air pressure at its current location and uses preset values to calculate altitude based on those measurements. Alternatively you can set a reference altitude and it will continue to measure altitude based on that reference. Any change in barometric pressure will throw off the altitude reading though.
@nikudes11 жыл бұрын
Keeping track of the barometer is a way of tracking the weather. If the barometer is falling there's a chance of rain. Rising barometer reading means weather is improving. Both watches graph the barometric trend for the previous 24hrs. The Suunto also logs the barometer (or altitude, depending on which mode it's in) in half hour increments for the previous week. If you note that the pressure dropped to say 950mb one day and it rained, you might assume it will rain again if the mb drop that low.

I had that Casio, now i have the Suunto and the Rangeman GW-9400 and still prefer the Suunto works fine
@nikudes12 жыл бұрын
The watch calculates the altitude based on the air pressure. It works the other way around as well. When you set a reference altitude, the watch then knows what the air pressure is a sea level. To keep the altitude accurate day to day, set the alt-baro mode to "Auto." The watch will attribute slow changes in pressure to barometric change and fast changes in pressure to altitude change. The system is 100% accurate over time however. Check and set the ref. altitude periodically for best results.

@rodbaker Sorry to hear that you're not satisfied with your Core. While I haven't seen it in person, I know that Suunto makes the Core with a reversed display (dark numbers on a light background). You can videos of it here too. You may find that one works out better for you.

@nikudes11 жыл бұрын
With the watches I've seen, you can adjust your altitude setting to "tune it" to your current location. As far as what's best, I haven't used that many and, of course, it depends on your needs. Your judgement on what's best may be different than someone else. That said, I think the Casio Pathfinder is hard to beat. It's cheap, rugged, and functional.

The thing you say at "5min" about the Casio being able to figure out the actual reference pressure/pressure at sea level: That sounds a bit too good to me, flying an airplane with an altimeter for 2000dollars doesnt do this, so what do you think? Could it be a standard value instead? (29,92inch.m/1013,25mb)
@Segulah115 жыл бұрын
I tried a Casio G-shocks with baro/alti/thermometer years ago but took it back when I noticed that the baro/alti functions were very inaccurate and apparently thrown off by one's own body heat. Since I prefer to wear a wristwatch on my wrist, it didn't make sense. Do you know if accuracy has improved with these Pathfinders? I noticed you showed inaccuracy & also had a workaround by setting ref pts. Did that work? I didn't like how Suunto ascribed baro/alti changes to whatever is displayed.
@BX020711 жыл бұрын
just curious..but why would you want to keep a log or record your baro readings..what would that be used for on a hike or any outdoor activity..
@nikudes15 жыл бұрын
I've noticed that my Suunto Core seems pretty accurate but I haven't done an accuracy test on the Pathfinder. That might be a good subject for a future video.

Pet peeve... as long as you are on the ground, your altitude is 0. As you walk along at trail your elevation may change. Altitude is measured in increments abouve the ground (feet, miles, meters, etc...) Nice watches.. In your opinion which is the best watch with a compass of all those you have heard of?? Thanks. Marc
@jaybellomy23462215 жыл бұрын
i think that they have a setting the barometer or alti and basicly what you do is you look at your barometric pressure for local you can adjust it to the right pressure and from there your good. calibration

Can you use a Nato strap with the Core? I think that would be cool.
@MasterofMayhem712 жыл бұрын
with the suunto core, if I wanted the altimeter to be accurate I would reference the altitude, but I noticed that it also changes your air pressure rating, would that air pressure given with the correct altitude be your true air pressure? if so whats even the point of referencing sea level air pressure?
@MasterofMayhem712 жыл бұрын
I have the Suunto core, if I wanted the correct altitude I would reference the correct altitude. I noticed that it changes your barometric pressure as well, is the pressure given is correct when your altitude is correct? If so why would I ever reference the pressure at sea level. I don't really care to much about my barometric pressure being prefect, I like the pressure graph, but I really just want my altitude to be right. whats the best setting to keep it on for that? boggled on how it works
@fisheyeguy5 жыл бұрын
I’ve got a pro trek, but the altimeter is never correct, even with adjustments to zero and a known altitude. I’m going with a Suunto next.

@Requiem071910 жыл бұрын
It seems like both watches are equally capable. The decider is probably how much info do you want on your GUI? More go with the pathfinder/protrek. If you want a cleaner interface go Suunto, assuming money is not the deal breaker.

As an engineer (me) your conversation sound a bit funny :). You don't need maths and physics to know how it works though - I think it is written in the manual (at least for casio)

Hi, I have a suunto core all back and I am very unhappy with. callus me my desk to the wooden floor and a whole line of the display is melted. Also looks very bad even in dark places where the sun does not shine on the screen. that's why I decided to buy me the CASIO RANGEMAN, since this relog am sure that I will not break for a little bump ...

There isn't much difference b/w gshocks and protreks. The protrek is equally tough but has much more functions and much higher price. I've got both a protrek and a mudman and to be honest I think the protrek is tougher.
@Koaki91313 жыл бұрын
the suunto core is cool but no match to the g shock riseman. if you were to say bang your suunto against sumthing its toast unlike g shock which are meant to take a beating. so to those with the suunto enjoy the little time you have with your watch because it wont last

the Suunto Core is the most problematic watch on the market it crashes like windows 95 lol i sent it back to fix 2 times already lookup on the net for the probs before u buy and it goes true batteries like water not good at all if u r out in the wild casio is the pound for pound best i own all the top main digital watches and i love the paw 1500t and the timex ws4 also the PRG-240T-7ER r very good watches, i love the timex ws4 cause it has a analog watch hands so u can use it as a compass too
@jrios6624 жыл бұрын
That's Petfinder is better simply because you can read everything on the display it's super team and visible that other piece of crap while she has I see absolutely nothing he's showing me on there it's completely black and then he says that the light is dim. Are you serious who the hell will buy a timepiece that looks like it was sprayed with black spray paint.

The Suunto Core is hard as shit to see in bright sun light. Like at the beach. It looks cool but the display is Shite! The Pathfinder G-Shock is kinda ugly. But the best outdoor watch I have heard of.

O my god men! 1.I will tell you only one think. If you just make a little scratch on the basel of suunto the compass is going to be destroyed!2.Casio has 200 meters water resistant and suunto only 30 meters!3. Casio pathfinder is a very old watch relatively with suunto core! 4.casio is absolutely shock resistant and suunto is not at all! 5.Casio is much more better and take a look at the PRISE!!
