Thanks, glad that you liked it. I haven't taken the watch snorkeling but the manual says that the max. depth measurement is 10 meters (32.8 ft.). I'm pretty sure it records depth logs the same way as altitude logs. I made a video of the log function. It's in the "Related Videos" box on the right. It's called "Suunto Core Review, New Band and Log Function." That'll give you a good idea of how it works.

@mecover I appreciate your service and your feedback. It sounds like I can stick by my "Suunto Core is like an Audi. Casio Pathfinder is like a Toyota" analogy.

Thanks, glad you liked the rest of the video. As far as the depth rating, I don't think I can explain it any better and I'm not an expert on the science. All I know is that every watch I've seen that's rated water resistant to 100m is only suitable for snorkeling depths. If you search for "Water Resistant Mark" on Wikipedia, you'll find an article that goes into more detail.

I've been wearing the Suunto all the time lately. It does everything and the interface has a lot of depth and a lot of features.
@nikudes15 жыл бұрын
It's massive. The case is 53mm across. (The Suunto is 49mm.) It's not heavy though. It weighs just over 2-1/2 ounces. (The Suunto is just under 2-1/2 ounces.)
@nikudes13 жыл бұрын
@i8Europe Well, I thought it was a fair comparison given the similar feature set, though I agree that they are in different leagues. I think the analogy I used was Toyota vs Audi. One's tough and basic and gets the job done. The other is sleeker, has more features, but also has its quirks. Glad you liked the video anyway.

You're right. I mention this in the comment section. For some reason I assumed it a G-Shock but it's a Pathfinder. Kind of a glaring goof.

Thanks for the video. I have a similar Pathfinder in titanium and it's always been a great watch - got it at costco ten+ years ago and the solar works well, haven't changed the battery and I only take it out occasionally. I like the look of the Suunto too, and it seems to have a good number of addition functions compared to the Pathfinder. One detail I remarked on was that you quoted 10 bar for the water resistance (for both), which I believe is 100m/~330 feet, not 30 ft. My Pathfinder says 100m, but I believe the Core is rated at 30m/~100ft. Hope this is helpful, cheers.
@nikudes10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I'm a big fan of the Pathfinder as well. I'm wearing it more these days than the Suunto. Re: the 30' question. I heard somewhere that, when diving with any watch, it's good to limit oneself to about a third of the ultimate depth rating, since that rating is determined in a static (no movement) test. Real-world use and movements subject the watch to greater pressures than the static test does, hence the very conservative 33% of ultimate depth rating recommendation. In the Core's case a third of 100ft. is roughly 30'. If I'm not mistaken, that's where the watch's depth gauge maxes out as well.

My mistake, I didn't zero them correctly. Also the Suunto can calculate true north whereas the Casio only registers magnetic north.
@ArbitraryLifestyle10 жыл бұрын
My Suunto Core simply quits working when I take it off of my wrist and the temp gets below 40F. The alarm doesn't go off, I can't read the time, altimeter is all screwed up. I've been contemplating a Casio...
@nikudes15 жыл бұрын
Technically you're right. 10 bar is the pressure generated at about 100m of depth. A watch rated as water resistant to 10 bar or 100m is recommended only for snorkeling though, which in practical terms means about 30 ft. The reason is that as you move the watch underwater, you generate more pressure on it in much the same way that air exerts pressure on your body when you move through it on a bike. Limiting the depth to snorkeling just provides a large safety factor.
@nikudes15 жыл бұрын
In the video I mention that it's 51mm across the case. The model is PAG40-3V.
@homemadealcoholstove15 жыл бұрын
When a watch manufacturer says "WR 200m" it doesn't really mean it will not have water ingress at 660 feet. It's simply a sort of "classification" Generally, people say that the true WR is a bit less than 1/3 of what it says. On the other hand, if it says "DIVE 200m" it is most likely manufactured to ISO 6425 standards, so it has been pressure tested to 125% of what is marked on the watch. And keep in mind that a plastic case will be relatively hard to make WR at 200 meters...

Nice review! Suunto really needs to work on their display. The reverse is way too difficult to read. I looked at one at a store yesterday and could barely read what time it was. I have a PAG40 and love it. I'm thinking of getting a Suunto Core next, but with the positive display style.

Yah just to let you know the Cheapest model of the Core you can find online for around 220 dollars, the most expensive all aluminum model you can find 375.
@Halfzipp15 жыл бұрын
I dont see how that makes sense. 100m is 328ft, which is more than 10x what you are saying.. If they meant 30ft, they would say 30ft, not 328ft. Other than that, great review and video.

@dlegeant77 The ""OPEN" indicated means the dealer did in fact open the watch. They probable lost one or both of the contact springs that makes connectiont to the back cover. Without those the circuit is open. I doubt the dealer was an official casio dealer.

That's my mistake. I didn't calibrate the altitude before filming. The altitude reading on both watches will wander over time because of variations in barometric pressure so they need to be calibrated to be accurate. I forgot to do this. Once calibrated they're both pretty accurate though.
@theodoresweger49485 жыл бұрын
I checked by using sea level, using my phone and suunto core it was very accurate. Note, your altitude will very wildly due to barometric changes, if it doesn't you may have a problem, hence the expression up and down like a barometer. My suggestion reset as often as you can to either sea level or known altitude for your known location. Hope this helps..

@nikudes10 жыл бұрын
I haven't checked the accuracy but it's precise to 1 degree. It has to be calibrated. There is no correction in the watch for declination. Try comparing the the watch to your favorite compass. I bet it will compare favorably.

@nikudes The Suunto will not hold up. I have had both watches. The Suunto bezel will completely wear off in contact with clothes, the bezel scratches in contact with grit in the air and the band will not support even casual use. The Casio, uglier , harder to read and not as accurate will last a lifetime. Comming from two tours of Iraq, S.A., and 6 years of missions with the Casio. Semper Fi.
