I have had a one for a few years, lost it, but it is really useful and very comfortable. I THANK YOU you though for showing the exact method of wearing it. It is totally NOT OBVIOUS how to position it so it actually fits on regular wrists. Hard to explain that it would be difficult to figure out, until you own one and do not have the intro to this video.

Is it transparent enough to be able to see a map through it? E.g. the meridian lines?

Do NOT buy this wrist compass if you're located and navigating in the southern hemisphere. It is balanced for the northern hemisphere ONLY... If you buy this and you attempt to use it in the southern hemisphere, you'll find that the southern side of the disk drags against the bottom of the housing. Unfortunately, Suunto do not make one of these for the southern hemisphere.
