Hope you guys enjoy the tour of my homemade car camping setup. I used this last weekend at some BLM land near Moab when I explored two national parks and it really works great for my needs. I sleep comfortably, it has plenty of storage, and is super easy to setup/remove!
I built this setup in my 2020 Hyundai Tucson. The final cost of the materials was $126.69. You do need some tools to assemble it as well which would be an additional cost if you didn't already have some.

I have a 2019 tucson and considering converting it for cheap glamping purposes while I look for some recreational land. nice simple setup man. looks like it's sub 1k to get into it with the framing and basics

Appreciate the kind words! If you want to go even simpler you can store items around the spare tire and throwing a mattress in the car without a platform. Happy camping!

I have a tucson and i want to travel with it. the folding platform bed is perfect. minimal clothing, and exercise and shower at planet fitness do you know of any groups where people can travel in convoys? Where do you sleep?

Nice job, Hawkin! I have a 2022 Tucson and am looking at doing the same thing. Dumb question - You don't have to have the rear hatch open when you sleep, do you? I'm a paranoid New Yorker and would not want to leave the hatch open. Thanks!

@@HawkinSaeger oh yeah I have! I actually made a video about it camping out of my Toyota Corolla. But I couldn’t keep it up over the winter balancing it with working remotely. Can’t wait for spring!

How long is the sleeping area? I'm 5'10" would it work?

My mattress I use on it is 75” so it should work for you. I am 5’7”

👋🏾 I have a Buick Encore would you say the 2 are about the same size? Reason y I’m saying this is i BARELY have any head room as it is That’s why I’m thinking a build like this would be impossible in my Encore but but I’m seeing your getting away with it lol….. nice job

I am not familiar with the size of the Buick Encore so I don’t think I can really answer that question well. The only thing I can say is that I highly recommend taking your time with measuring and planning a build that will work for you!

Nice build. When you camp, can you leave the hatch open for long periods of time? Have you ever had a dead battery because of this? Also wondering if you disconnected any electrical to avoid draining the battery?

I have left it open for a long period of time. I was actually trying to figure out how to stop the lights from going on because I was worried about this but I actually have no had an issue

Hey mike if you manually turn the locking mechanism on the hatch the car will think it’s closed. Latch opens back up when you unlock and use the hatch like normal. Hope that helps!

Hey! building out my Tucson now, wondering if you've ever had an issue with your 'door ajar' dashboard light? I have my dome lights set to off and have removed my trunk light, but I can't seem to figure out how to shut off my door ajar warning light that comes on the dash when my trunk is open. wondering if you've ever had an issue with this draining your battery?? or if you know how to turn it off. Thanks! :)

I actually haven’t checked to see if that warning comes on. I have wondered before if opening doors and the lights going on will drain my battery but haven’t had an issue yey

This is super helfpul. I'm exploring purchasing a Hyundai Tuscon which I will use as my everyday vehicle as well as camping. Maybe you say it in the video and I missed it but I'm guessing your bed isn't super easy to remove in order to use the back seats?

It’s actually not terrible to remove. In fact I designed it in a way I can fold and slide it all into the trunk. It takes a few minutes to set up/tear down. However I’m going to explore removing the bed platform now that I have a roof box for storage

Nice! What do you do for airflow while sleeping? Do you have screens for the windows to stop bugs from coming into the car? Did I miss that?

I haven't used it when it has been super warm so no issues with bugs yet. I usually crack a window for some airflow and to prevent condensation on the inside, even if it is really cold. I do plan to get some screens though!

Haven’t done anything to them yet. When it’s warm I often crack them. I think I want to get some privacy/bug screens soon
