Love the resourcefulness and attitude here. That said, I might opt for a more portable and flexible solution using inflatables. Those wood pieces are going to need to be stored and managed, and they aren't small/light.

I went Car camping for the first time in my Hyundai Tucson. The only issue I had was a dead battery after the weekend. As far as I know there was no power draw. Have you had this problem and how did you remidy it. I figure it has something to do with the key fob in pocket
@HawkinSaeger7 ай бұрын
I don’t have an electronic key fob. Mine is an actual key so not sure about that. Leaving radio on or door lights might be affecting you?

@Hawkin. Nice and simple! Well done. Thinking about doing the same for my 2010 Ford Edge. How did you secure the longer posts that support the head end of the platform, just behind the seats.
@HawkinSaeger2 жыл бұрын
They just go from the floor to the platform! Removable bolts secure them to the platform. Nothing holds them in place on the floor except force I guess. No issue yet

I just got a 2016 Tucson and camping was the first thing I thought of when I saw the cargo area. Did the cargo weight limit of 130 lbs cause any problems?
@HawkinSaeger11 ай бұрын
I haven’t had any issues! The trunk piece sits on top of the cover for the spare tire and it hasn’t bent or anything. I don’t think I have over 100 lbs worth of gear though. Also I never really put my full weight on just that piece

What kind of plywood did you get? 3/4 inch? And also did you just get one 4 x 8 piece or 2?
@HawkinSaeger5 ай бұрын
There's a blog in the description that shows the material list! Yes I got 3/4 inch and I planned my cuts to only use one sheet of plywood

@@HawkinSaeger Follow up question! If the back plywood piece is 40 x 30" long and the smaller pieces you are 8 x 30" did the board up top hang over after you took out the small cuts for the 2 x 4?

Awesome design! Do you need to support under the piano hinge section? I can imagine it needs direct support to take the weight of a person on top of it..?
@HawkinSaeger2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I do put in a 2x4 that runs the length of that section on the seat. Then once extended, I have supports on each corner that go to the floor of the SUV to the platform
@emmaoleary42032 жыл бұрын
Hey Hawkin, great video and super helpful for me as I'm planning an SUV conversion. I can't open your blog, (I was hoping to check your build measurements). Any chance you could post them here? Cheers.
@HawkinSaeger2 жыл бұрын
Hey Emma! Weird it didn’t work, but hopefully I can sum it up for you. The platform overall is 75” x 40”. It is made up of 3 pieces that are: 30” x 40”, 25” x 40”, and 20” x 40”. The 3 plywood spines holding up the largest piece in the trunk are 8” tall. Here is the blog link too maybe it will work from here 🤷🏽♂️ hawkinsaeger.com/blog/how-to-build-a-car-camping-setup-in-your-suv-for-cheap/

I'm 5'11" Is there anyway you could measure with a tape measure the longest distance (diagonal too perhaps) from the back of the inside of the trunk to the back of the front seats when they are pushed all the forward. This would be the sleeping length that we have to work with. Would help soo much to know this distance! 🙏
@HawkinSaeger2 жыл бұрын
So it’s a bit complex because the trunk door is curved slightly. I would say seats all the way forward to the trunk is around 73” safely you might be able to push more. Diagonal around 80” Hope this helps!

Mate. Allison Anderson built this design on her channel four years ago. So…. Not your design😮
@HawkinSaeger2 ай бұрын
Didn’t claim I came up with the idea! I have been a subscriber of Allison Anderson for years and absolutely love her content! Also, if you watched Allison’s video she actually got the design from a blog she links so it’s not really hers either. Regardless I linked both her video and one from Felicia Fullwood that I took inspiration from in my description. I made a sort of combination of both for my design custom for my car and I am happy with how it turned out! With any build you do it’s a great idea to research and learn about various methods that could work well in your own vehicle. Thanks for watching and for the comment! Hope this sheds some light on the process
