Range Rover Sport owner here. Loved seeing the RRS tackle this challenge without even breathing hard. I was a bit disappointed in the GLE's performance. Great test. Cross overs are not really "hard off road vehicles" but will probably provide good ability on gravel and light off road. The Jeep is probably the best entry or dividet from cross-over to off-roader and the Range is in a different class.

My range has that too and its cool that they easily dominate the other ones! they probably dont have lockers.. but the jeep should have one!?

Perhaps there is an answer to your question too. Question #1: The drivers are not driving correctly. They don't know how to ride and so on. Drivers deliberately drive as slowly as possible and along a deliberately “wrong” complex trajectory. This allows you to demonstrate the effectiveness of the four-wheel drive system. If you take a good acceleration, then all cars will easily pass this obstacle and you will not notice any difference in their behavior. Question #2: What driving mode is used? Why was off-road mode not turned on? To better understand the difference. At first, all cars drive in the “dummy” mode: the gearbox is just in the Drive position. After the car gets stuck and cannot go further, we activate the available auxiliary mode, most often this is the OFF-ROAD mode. This sequence allows you to form an understanding of how the behavior of the car changes in standard and offroad modes. Question #3: Different tires, so the test is not fair! I completely agree with you. The same tires will add objectivity. But since I do not have a car tire factory, we work with what we have. At the moment, we are checking that the tire pressure corresponds to the factory values (for each car individually). Question #4: Range Rover is not a competitor! You cannot compare SUVs equipped with 5 litre engines to SUVs equipped with 3.0 litre engines. I intentionally added a Range Rover in this video to show you that this obstacle can be overcome. The only question is the technical capabilities of the car. Question #5: Why is there no Land Cruiser / G-Class / Lexus GX & LX / Jeep Wrangler etc. in this video? I think this is the best off-road test I've seen. The Range Rover was clearly in a class of its own and a pleasure to watch how assuredly it tackled this climb. However, for me, it was the Q7 which was the biggest surprise, not least since in looks it doesn't have the same 'off-road styling' of some of the others.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee needed the drive mode changed from 'auto' to 'sand/mud/or rock'. Being an Overland model, it would have combined traction control and is eLSD to crawl that whole track with little to no wheel spin. It's a fantastic system, superior to traction control only vehicles, shame you didn't showcase it.

Its not a true 4wd though so nothing less expected. The rear 127bhp electric motor kicks in for performance under acceleration on highway for performance. Trouble is you tubers don't understand this and class it as 4wd which it is not. Goes like stink from a standstill on tarmac though. It was never designed for off road use. It is purely a road going luxury suv and a very good one at that.

David Wilson If that is your statement, you are not a truck/suv person as that has more to do with the tires than anything else. Driving up an icy paved road is something an AWD sports car can do as long as it has snow tires (or Michelin defenders in your case). The competency and strength of an AWD system shows its true colors in low traction/high torque situations. Sand is one of the best ways to test an awd system.

The vehicles you brought to the show were not in the same league as range rover and merely show that as a luxury 4x4 this car is superior in any terrain although the terrain you thought challenging was merely a bit of mud n sand. Fantastic video. One of the best I have ever seen. I will definitely watch the others as well. This was a difficult test. The Grand Cherokee had the advantage of the low gear transfer case. Too bad it was not available for the second round of testing. The Range Rover was fantastic. Very impressive for such a heavy vehicle. Great video.

I've owned Land Rovers, Range Rovers and Land Cruisers. The Land Rover and Land Cruiser are far superior in this terrain than the Range Rover. A Jeep Wrangler would beat all of them in this type of terrain.

The best is to have all the wheels connected to the engine and spinning together with fully lock diferencials, like the old Hyundai Galloper and Mitsubishi Pajero were, those things were unstoppable, much better than modern electronic 4x4 transmission.

The thing is that these are mainly on-road high performance wagons with raised ride height. The average owner would not want to go off-roading properly with them because their are very expensive luxury cars. The Range Rover does it far better probably because that is what Land Rover as a company is based on, but the average owner will still not want to risk breaking the thing, because they do break and are a pain to fix when they do, I use to have the full size Range Rover.
