What fun to see Tristan on a motorcycle, and finally, in the vicinity of Adobe Town! Your experience is like mine: every time I visit Adobe Town, I have it entirely to myself. You're right, Tristan, you need to come back and concentrate on the Adobe Town Rim, where the best of the badlands are. Happily, it's a short ride from your home in Rock Springs. You could easily ride to Adobe Town, directly from home. Take your drone! I look forward to seeing your drone footage along Adobe Town Rim! The hoodoos are otherworldly! Riding a motorcycle around the wild horses can be great fun. They are curious about motorcycles, particularly if you're alone. I once encountered a herd of wild horses on the west side of Adobe Town. I was riding slowly, and the herd came over to the road, and they cantered along right next to me, for half a mile, then crossed the road in front of me, and cantered along on the other side for a distance too. The wild horses are one of my favorite parts of Red Desert rides! Tristan, you missed an interesting aspect of the ruins at Fort LaClede. The rocks it is built from contain billions of fossilized snails. The rock formation they built it from was once seafloor, and the rocks formed when conditions changed in the inland sea and killed off billions of snails, which then settled to the bottom and got cemented together. If you go to rock shops in Wyoming, look for a rock called "Turritella agate." Fort LaClede is built entirely from Turritella agate.

Same-own a WR250R. My question would be how comfortable are you leaving your vehicle parked while off on the bike? Seems like a recipe for break-in or theft?
@philhurst9053Ай бұрын
Stick with the XT250, great bike it will take you anywhere you want to go, unless you decide to start cruising the highways. Always remember “Less is More”, being a backpacker you already know this.
@KTMNomadАй бұрын
I'll second this. I've rode many miles on various bike brands and styles, all my experience has me gravitating towards smaller and simpler bikes. More electronics create more problems and in remote areas, this can be a big problem. I am very savvy with bike maintenance, but that doesn't mean I enjoy solving problems in the middle of desert. Besides, journeys are best explored at a modest pace. This bike keeps everything in check.
@jimhaley7496Ай бұрын
We have a back rack on a trail capable vehicle like you. We stick with 80/20 dirt tires on the bike and use the truck for the pavement miles. MUCH more safer as well. WAY more comfortable than slabbing down the highway for more than a few miles. About 600 miles of pavement miles will ruin decent off road tires. ANY bike's capability is determined more by what kind of tires it has (full knobbies, dual sport, or pavement) than the bike model. We find it much more fun to have knobbies on the dirt and MUCH easier to get out of mud than 50/50 tires or even worse street tires.
@jimhaley7496Ай бұрын
One more thing. I had a CRF250L, WR250, and now I ride a plated WR450F. Not sure how fast the WR450F will go but it is WAY lighter than a 250 dual sport. None of these are comfortable on the pavement for any length of time but all three are very competent even on narrow single track, muddy roads, technical rock climbs, and short lengths of pavement (under 20 miles). Riding on highways very far is just too noisy and it is too easy for heavy fast cars to kill or maim. The only pavement I ride is from where I park the truck to where the trail starts.
@dirtrider9268Ай бұрын
I'll third this advice. Getting Lighter and better suspension is the main reason to upgrade some day, but way off in the future if ever...

I went from riding a KLR650 to a DR350 to a BMW R1200GS and now I've got a Yamaha WR250R. I ridden and camped all over North America. It's a wonderful way to experience the world! Hauling an XT around on your Land Cruiser is a great way to go. Now, as my wife and are are aging and our bodies are becoming a bit lest resilient to damage, we've got a pair of fat-tire e-bikes and are looking to get rid of the motorcycles in the near future. I'd been hauling or trailering small motorcycles to the desert for years, and now will be doing that with our e-bikes, carrying them either on the back of a van or 4x4 pickup with a rooftop tent. Small bikes are so much easier to ride off road! Life is good. Thanks for the videos!

Hi Tristan. Love your videos. I’m an avid hiker living in St. George UT. I realized a dual-sport motorcycle would be a great way to explore deeper into the Arizona Strip (Arizona north of the Grand Canyon, south of St. George) and other backcountry, so a couple of years ago I bought a Yamaha XT250-same as yours. It’s a great bike for such explorations, but like you I found it to be not well suited to highway riding, so I bought a Honda CRF300L Rally, which is one of the bikes you said you are considering for your second bike. You said you are leaning towards the non-Rally version, but I believe that for the kind of riding you are planning the Rally version would be a better choice. It will be considerably more comfortable on the highway due to its windshield and wider faring. It will have easily over 100 miles of extra range due to its 3.4-gallon gas tank (only 2.1 on the non-Rally). It has a bigger front disc brake, which given all the gear you plan to carry could be an advantage. The Rally also has a good place to mount a navigation device like the Garmin Zumo XT. It is true that with the larger faring and windshield the Rally looks larger, but it's just 25 lbs. heavier, and about 8 of that is the extra gas. With either version you might want to consider an upgraded rear shock absorber, given the gear you plan to carry. Also, I hope you carry a Gamin inReach or similar satellite communications device-just in case.

Tristan I think your hooked. I am one of those guys that rode in my youth and stopped and started again in my 60s. I am 73 now and own a Honda CRF300L Rally. I love the bike I can go out camping and still ride on the highway at 70 mph. I think you would like the CRF 300L better because it is easer to work on. My Rally is very complicated to work on because of all the added plastics on the bike. Although it is more comfortable at Highway speeds because of the plastic fairings. I do like the larger tank but both bikes easily get 70 mpg or better depending on how you ride. I also ended up lowering the bike because it is so tall. If you haven't already check out Moto Camp Nerd, they have lots of motorcycle camping gear. Great video!
@dirtrider9268Ай бұрын
How did the suspension work for you, if you are over 70 kg loaded? It is one of the weaknesses of the CRF 300L and I warn shoppers on this as it will have to be addressed if you are looking to upgrade from the XT. Also be aware the 300 is made in the offshore plant in Thailand as i recall, it is not from the Japan factory known for their excellent build quality.

Weird people would say not to share too much but America or lots of it is PUBLIC LAND. Meaning everyone can enjoy these areas but pack im what you bring. Let's leave these places the way we came in. Don't litter people. Let's be good stewards of what we still have.
@jmpattilloАй бұрын
The problem is that people tend to focus on what is familiar. If an area has been “endorsed” by someone they trust online, then more people are likely to go there and use the resource. Even public land can have access shut down or restricted if it gets damaged by overuse. For example, the BLM recently closed around 300 miles of popular off road routes near Moab. The only way you can access them now is if you are able to hike in the desert or if you are rich enough to use a horse.

I loved this video Tristan! Based on my many years of dirt-biking and dual-sporting, I can tell you that you have opened a new chapter of life that you will love and not regret! I quit when I reached age 74 and now only ride street bikes (I ride a Harley PanAmerica-same as the guy you rescued). It really got my juices flowing to watch this video and I will be right there with you on all your future videos like this. I have two suggestions: consider a Honda CRF 450X. This was the best of all the many dirt bikes I owned. And, secondly, develop a riding partner to go with you on rides to remote areas. Don’t do it alone. I know that’s not your style, but believe me, at some point in the future some event or circumstance will occur where you will absolutely need help (like the guy you rescued). Keep going man! I think you are hooked already. I will be vicariously experiencing each adventure with you and wishing I were young again. Oh, one last comment: try off road geocaching. I found plenty of off-road caches and it was great fun. Best wishes !

Nice bike Tristan. BE CAREFUL when loading all your gear. Think of it the same way you load a backpack, paying careful attention to weight distribution being careful not to load it too top heavy. Also learn to shift your own weight, always trying to move YOUR weight uphill as much as possible. Lean forward going uphill and back going downhill (so watch what you load in those areas to keep from impeding your movement). Dirt bikes are great fun, but keep your guard up when mixing with car traffic. ALWAYS REMEMBER that car drivers are trying to KILL YOU. Not maliciously, but carelessly…negligently. I rode dirt bikes for 50 years, including dozens of off road races; great choice for a first bike, it will serve you well. My passion was, and still is, exploring the desert backcountry, now in a SxS. My motorcycling tip - learn how to use your front brake competently, it's the most important safety control on the bike. Use it frequently, gently at first but you want to develop threshold braking (panic stops), muscle memory - you want to know where it is and how to use it when you don't have time to think. Be careful, it's a slowly developed skill but very important.

But just remember safety first , respect the motorcycle and respect the land you ride it on. Most people these days are distracted by cell phones so be careful out there & never assume they see you . Happy trails 🏍️ P.S. As a seasoned rider let me give you some advice, keep both hands on the bars when the bike is in motion ! That gravel your on is incredibly unstable. If you go down , that gravel will chew you up & spit you out . I know this from experience.

I'm ridden dirt bikes off and on for over 50 years. Recently spent time in Utahs Escalante and Capitol Reef area with my KTM 390 Adventure. Two pieces of advice, 1/ learn to ride on the pegs. What I saw in your video, you where taking quite a chance with what you where wearing.

You'd need a bench and hammer to bend my O'Neal .. good point I think your right ? I do miss the feel of the pegs a bit tricky to get good feedback with boots but I guess I'll learn.. I'll never ride without them again. Maybe higher end stuff gives better feedback, thanks for the tip... Which Alpines? Yep

@@pairofjacks1006 I must have missed were he mentioned boots. I was just going off what I observed. I currently wear Alpinestar Tech 5s.

Great video, thanks for posting it. I also have an XT250(2023) and absolutely love it. I started with a Honda 250 Nighthawk back in 2002, then a Triumph Boneville, then after riding the Boneville from San Diego to Laguna Seca(Monterey, CA area), I wanted somethiing a little bit more built for long distance riding, so I bought a Kawasaki 650 Versys, which I loved. Then I gave up riding for a good 8 years after my riding bbuddy moved out of state. Bought my XT250 in 2023 and couldn't be happier. It will handle anything I could possibly throw at it, with my limited off-road skills!

Excellent choice for a bike! Just the beginning of a new addiction. Yer fixing to make a lifetime of great memories, welcome to the motorcycle community. At 70 years old, it’s unlikely I could hike to the areas, that my motorcycle will take me. Adventures are endless, and I’m able to visit areas that most people will not visit in their lifetimes. I live in SW Idaho, and find something new and beautiful every ride. I recommend taking your Tenkara pole with you on every ride too!

Great start to something new on your channel while still using the SUV as an important part of the adventure. If you ever do the Nevada section of the original Pony Express route (Prairie Gate to Lakeside), I would call you an expert dirt bike rider after that😀

I like how you transported into the future (Date Filmed),...😀 I think we'll enjoy watching your new mode of travel. There's about a million things to learn, you'll look back in a few years at this video and think How did I ever make it! Enjoy the journey.

0:25 Congratulations on the motorcycle I hope your lovely wife was happier than mine when I bought mine. 😂

Congratulations, you chose well. The XT 250 is a capable and dependable bike and with the mods, needs little else. I'm sure a seat pad will be in the future. I wore out 3 DT enduros in the 70's and 80's riding all over northern ID and western MT. Since retiring 4 yrs. ago, I've purchased a TW200 and KLR 650, and ride the heck out of them. Keep in mind not to buy a bike that you can't stand back up by yourself.

Love it! I have ridden many dual sports, and we were watching and I told my girlfriend that the XT was great as long as you were not doing much highway. Then you said you needed something slightly better and I was going “CRF300L!!!”. I suggest not doing the Rally. It’s got more crap to break. You can get a 3.6 gallon tank for a couple hundred bucks. And those Hondas have a ton of suspension, fuel, exhaust and luggage goodies. Plus they have long maintenance intervals. I plan on getting one too. Enjoy the new adventures!👍
