Interesting video, thank you! By the way the pronunciation of the river is :pah-ree-ah /pəˈriːə/, rhymes with “Maria”

I did this hike last year, its a great circuit. Something to note, when you're in the paria box area, if you go a mile or so west you end up at the Pahreah town site, which has some nice historical structures and a graveyard, and was a site where many westerns were filmed (the old set has unfortunately burned down). Most importantly though the cliffs at old Pahreah feature beautiful striped bentonite clay in a rainbow of colors. Its very similar to rainbow mountain in Peru and extremely photogenic especially around sunset. You can also reach Pahreah townsite by road but its a nice add-on to a hike to yellow rock and red top and makes for a great long day in Grand Staircase-Escalante
@justlookin3 Жыл бұрын
I often wonder about what sort of lives people had in the later half of the century. What that hermit was doing with electricity and being so far from anything. The structures were so exotic. Seems like the place has been looted so much that all the real clues are gone. Thanks for sharing this enigma with us.
@jefflunt9615 Жыл бұрын
I was at the movie set when a large rain upstream came through and the water mark was pretty near the movie set. I first heard the townsite burned down but later heard they moved it to higher ground. Do you have any information on that?
@cramias1 Жыл бұрын
@@jefflunt9615 from what the internet says the movie set burned down in 2006. When i explored there there were only some historical structures (graveyard and rock wall buildings) still standing, nothing at all at the old movie set site
@jefflunt9615 Жыл бұрын
@@cramias1 Thanks. Sorry to hear that. I've luckily been there several times in the last 30 plus years and have video and some very nice stills, so I guess that will have to do. It sure was a wonderful place to pretend you were in an old western.
@loudowning3393 Жыл бұрын
@@jefflunt9615 The original movie set (see: The Outlaw Josie Wales) was there when my kids and I visited in about 1992; it was burned by arson sooner after that and a real nice new wood set was then built. Unfortunately, somebody didn't like that there so it was also burned down by arsonists. Now only a picnic area exists. Rainbow Mountain is still worth the drive off 89 though. The main attraction in the area is the spectacular Buckskin Gulch

Wow, wonderful scenery. Back in the 30s, 40s and 50s, especially the 1950s there was a lot of survival pamphlets and material. Bunkers and caches were the thing. Pack mules and riding mules were fairly common up until the 1960s. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures.

19:16 That's a Sonoran Collared Lizard. I found one once, a long way from Utah. It was sitting on the rock next to me one day in Arizona, as I soaked my sore feet in Burro Creek midway through a hike. we sat side by side for more than an hour, and he barely moved the whole time. I got lots of great photos!

Looks like some places I hiked somewhat "off trail" north of Snow Canyon. Definitely one of the nicest less traveled back-country areas. As for the caches it does remind me of a few individuals who did (or do) those hidden caches and bunkers. Even had several "bunkers" with supplies, guns and ammo discovered during the big fires a couple years ago around Beaverhead. The old boy that set them up was in his 80s and haven't heard much about it except that he told them of several other caches he had dispersed about. Interesting folk out there.

Great find. Beautiful scenery. I believe Paria is pronounced like Pahreah as the old town ruin was spelled that way. Early European Americans pronounced it the correct way as it's Spanish, but didn't know how to spell it. In Spanish Paria means Outcast...not quite the same in English. Okay, I'm being a pain. Possibly originally a hunters, herders or miners camp. That big metal box looks like it was part of a truck bed- notice the lights/reflectors on the roofline. 60 years ago there may have been a dirt track, 4 wheel drive trucks could have gotten in, as could pack mules.

Fun stuff! Looks to me like perhaps a veteran coming home from WWII and decided he had enough of human society and just wanted to be left alone. Sites like this are so interesting! I found an undocumented (? I couldn't find anything about it at any rate) ruin site right next to a BLM campground near Virgin Utah, on the road to Kolob Reservoir. Just a series of well built dry stacked walls and a cleared and leveled space on a bench above the river; beautiful view, good water supply, hidden and difficult to access without being seen. Had a fun weekend exploring it while camped just below it, at the very end of the campground land.

I was driving up Shell canyon in Wyoming a couple of weeks ago and thought I saw a cave with some kind of ruins way up a ravine. There were no turn-outs anywhere near where I saw the cave, so I couldn't stop to check it out further. It was a steep ravine on the north side (opposite side from the road across the river). There may be a way to get to it from the gate area below it and cross the foot bridge and go up the canyon from there. I'm no mountain goat, but thought Tristan might want to check it out.
