I remember when I walked through the desolate streets of New York early in the pandemic. Rats were spilling out of trash cans and fighting each other for scraps on the sidewalks. I’m guessing it was because there was less discarded human food for them to survive on. Since then, the rats have retreated back into shadows. Now, Suzanne is reminding me that they’re still there, everywhere. 🐀

I hope this is the first single of a new album. I liked the Carson McCullers album but I miss Vega’s studio albums. I feel like she only records when she has something to say. And this is definitely saying something and it feels so necessary to speak about what is happening right now in the world and this song is a perverse wink at the disturbing things to come. To a new Suzanne record!

This is truly Suzanne Vega? Of 'Cracking', 'Freeze Tag', 'Some Journey', Tom's Diner', and 'Luka' fame? (If you're not familiar with any of those songs, Dear Reader, please do yourself a favor and give them a listen.) I would have thought it more likely an offering from the likes of rocker Debbie Harry (of Blondie), or maybe even Joan Jett, but WTH, everything changes... This is definitely a fun offering, in the style of Devo perhaps; goodonya Suzanne, for tossing your hat back into the ring. ;) -From a friend and bandmate of your old love, the dearly departed Frank C. Edit: BTW, the gym rats, with their Pilates magic circles, is one hilarious, priceless touch. Bravo! ;) This will obviously take several viewings to pick up on all the other wry inclusions. OK, another; Rats' Deli on Ludlow & Houston. I'm sure there will be dozens...

As someone who read Suzanne’s Passionate Eye, which included among many of her poems, Leonard Cohen’s interview of her about her works. I find it hard to believe this song is actually about Rats and doesn’t have a deeper meaning about our current state of the human experience or her beloved New York.

I could be wrong, but I think this song is about how they're running rampant in New York, at least partially. But it doesn't become apparent until the later half. And she doesn't reference NY specifically, but that was where I thought of when I was listening (I'm in Australlia, BTW)

This is great. Most artists who have been around for such a long time pretty much fall into a rut and just keep making the same type of song over and over again, losing a bit more edge each time. I love that Suzanne instead decided to drop a little post-punk ditty about vermin. Then again, I think she was always a little bit of a rocker underneath it all.
