For anyone asking: A steek is a guide to help you define the cut line. You reinforce it so the stitches don't fall apart after you cut. Especially great for working colourwork patterns so you can maintain tension, and you don't have to purl or interrupt the knitting in fair isle. The lines are usually knit in and a button and, or whatever band you want, is applied after.

Thank you so much for this! I've watched about two dozen steeking videos to prepare for my first cardigan steek and yours was definitely the clearest - I feel a lot less nervous now! Was originally planning on using a sewing machine because I'd heard that was the most secure way to reinforce, but I'm not very familiar with sewing and was not looking forward to it. I do know how to crochet though and this looks so much easier and definitely looks secure enough for me!

Still kind of investigating what do do at the end with the folded over sections to keep them laying flat and smooth - do you have instructions for that too? Just baste them down with some stitches or something more serious than that?
@SuzanneBryan4 жыл бұрын
Once you pick up stitches along the design edge, the steeked stitches will naturally fold to the back. YOu can whip stitch them in place, or do nothing. If you used the crochet edge prior to cutting, the edge should be just fine. Try on a swatch and see what you think.

@@SuzanneBryan Dear Susan, i've got another question about steeking: I've got eleven Steek stitches and I feel it's too much because that will get bulky. So my idea ist to make two cuts in the steek. One on the left side and one on the right side of the steek by securing them with a crochet Line. Ist that possible or do I do a thinking mistake? I hope you understand what I mean😂 Many greetings from germany 🇩🇪 Andrea

Thank you for the tutorial Suzanne! I've done Norwegian style knitting and steeking before, but I'd forgotten how to do it and your method was so easy. I will definitely take advantage of your pickup stitch calculator you mentioned. I'm attempting something a little crazy. I knit the tube with the steeking for the cardigan and the armholes, but instead of just picking up the stitches along the edge I'm attempting to slant them so that I can do a wide buttonhole band in a long cardigan style. Wish me luck!

I have tried both and compared (not on video), the checkerboard looks cool, but in reality it makes it more difficult to see where you are going to reenforce, so I stick with the stripes
