I like your review. The DR would be perfect for me in Argentina. I don't see very many. Suzuki aren't very popular and parts are scarce. Your definition of adventure riding is perfect. Touring, going long distances and not worrying about road conditions. I ride a Honda NX4 Falcon 400. Same engine as a XR400 in a frame suited for more road riding. We don't have many interstates here so really high speeds aren't important. Dirt riding isn't important to me but we have a lot of gravel roads. The main highway ruta 40 from north to south is about half gravel and peaks at 16,000 ft elevation at one point. Thanks for your review and I'll be keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a DR

I did some of the same mods you did, larger tank, Seat Concepts seat, dropped the suspension like you did. I went with a 14 tooth countershaft sprocket and it does 65 - 70 no problem. I want to change to a 520 chain and sprockets that are more common then the 525 and replace the cush drive with something a bit harder. Maybe lower the footpegs. i love the simplicity of the bike.Great video!

Thanks for the video. I'm buying my second DR650 tomorrow' a 2013 in showroom condition for $4500. I'm tired of road riding...too many careless drivers out there...heading back to riding gravel and trails.

Thanks for the great comment. Like you I’m enjoying riding the gravel and discovering whats ahead. I still ride my Harley into town ( 60 miles round trip) a couple of times a week but my multi state interstate trips are done. Be Particular Ol Slick

Mine is a bit modded, aftermarket suspension a pipe and whatnot! But can completely see that in stock form it would be just fine. Just making it feel right for yourself is all you need to do! Either simple adjustments or giving it more poke! If I could get one more thing on mine it would be a kick start, as backwoods as that sounds just seems like something that would give it that completeness!

Thanks for the excellent comment. I will most likely continue to modify my engine and suspension in the future just to see how far I can take this bike. Be sure to subscribe and follow my build and me doing some other stuff. Oh and heck yea a kick start would be great… I carry an electric jump box. My son is 42 , big long time rider and has never kick started a bike. Keep the comments coming. God Bless Be Particular, Ol Slick

Love it. I really want one of the original Himalayan’s myself, and I know this is an upgrade pwerwise, but I JUST LOVE dials and meters. The more analog the better. I think, while some say the himalayan dashboard is too busy, its just perfect. I do love the dr650 though and its on my short list. If you ever see a dashboard modification that makes it a little more fun to look at and useful, I’d love to see it. A dashboard is like a control panel for me, and without a little more intrigue and information it feels more like a bike than a vehicle to me. Its just what I like. If I can save up I’ll probably still go with tha Himalayan (I hate the new one btw).

Thanks for the comment. Did you see my Himalayan videos… really wish I’d keep it for a friend to ride bike. I like the upgrades on the new Himalayan but liked the looks of the older one better. I’m sure they’ll be a lot of the older ones up for sale soon… Grab one they’re great. They’re just a little tractors. Again thanks for the comment. Please Subscribe Ol slick

My next bike. I'm 65 next year. I have a few bikes. For an adventure bike, it's the R1200GSA. I'm looking forward to modifying a Dr650 to the fullest..and it being my next adventure bike.

Thanks for the great comment friend. I retired my 1200GSA last year. See my video about TAT Mississippi mud claims two riders. This trip sent me to the lighter DR 650. I’ll also be 65 next year… what a ride life has been. Be Particular, Ol Slick

I agree with the gentlemen in the video. THough you can certainly mod this bike to death (mine is more aftermarket than suzuki) id recommend getting your armor, pegs and new bars. Then roll it for a bit. You can make this bike damn near anything and in my opinion, you wanna grow it over time to your needs. Its a great bike you can have a relationship with.
@mikeh.4087Ай бұрын
I have that same countershaft sprocket guard. I just noticed this week that when the rear suspension is completely compressed the chain gets into the top of it. Not sure if it is only my bike but i did grind some clearance for it. Im sure if you dont tax the suspension it wont be an issue. I agree my DR is without a doubt one of my favorite bikes i have ever owned!

Like you, I’ve had many motorcycles. And dual sports have always been my favorite. Everyone’s version of a Unicorn is going to be different. I learned that from watching KZbin. Lol.. But this bike is just really hard to beat, when it comes to dual sports, in my opinion. It’s not the bike that I have chosen to ride at this stage in my journey, but it remains one of my favorite dual sports of all time. I’m curious about your GPS. Which model you have, and does it accept GPX files? I need something to run Sam Correro’s maps, and I don’t want to break the bank...
@TommyWasHereАй бұрын
Thank you for this amazing comment. I’ve discovered you can’t purchase a dual sport or adventure unicorn bike, I believe that’s why they designed the DR 650 so you could make your own unicorn. The GPS is a garmin ZUMO 395. I have all of Sam’s tracks down loaded on it. However, his files had to be downloaded into base camp and transferred into gpx files. Not 100% what I did exactly, was a couple of years age, but I got his file into that GPS😆. Hope this helps friend. Please subscribe and follow my adventures, got some really cool things coming up in the future. Ol Slick

slide carby, airbox and exhaust makes a big difference. No, not needed. Big benefits though. You will get a little more power, but thats not the "win" you are after. Instead, its the low end torque which is very helpful when lugging around. It also makes the bike more "lively" as your power (torque) comes on much much sooner. Agree, this bike is excellent out of the box but there is a big return on investment for mods.
@TommyWasHere7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the great comment and advice. I’m thinking I may go ahead and do those mods this winter. That extra pep is nice. Thanks Tommy aka Ol Slick

Good, except for suspension, small gas tank, seat, not 6 spd, no efi, no kickstart. But other than that it's good. Same with honda. Kawi too heavy, still doohickey problem.
@TommyWasHereАй бұрын
Hey, thanks for the excellent comment. Yeah you hit it on my head. Those are items. I wish I would’ve mentioned. Have a great day friend. Ol Slick
@giovanhagarАй бұрын
Doesn't need a 6 speed, efi requires a fuel pump which can fail, suspension is good for me. The only other bike that compares is the XR650 also a 5 speed. Both bikes have easily adjustable valves.
