Continuation to the motorcycle charging system video I uploaded a couple of weeks ago, the new regulator/rectifier unit arrived and now it's time to run a few tests on it prior to instillation & fitment.
In this video I also do a conformation charging rate test on the bike with the new part fitted.
Charging system faults on motorcycles are quite common and often wrongly diagnosed, I'm hoping that this video helps you to decide whether it's your battery, stator, wiring or reg/rec unit that's at fault.
If you have any questions then just add them to the comments section below & I'll do my best to get back to you soon.

I was leaning towards the meter myself. Awesome video, so informative.

Just tested mine. Exactly the same readings as your new unit

Great videos, came across you and find them straight forward and easy to understand. Why on motorbikes don't they use bigger gauge wire for the stator wires,?! Mine get hot but everything checks out and the bike runs fine. Cheers.

Hey Andy. Maybe the reason you did not get the correct diode voltage readings is because your meter cannont test diodes that require say more than 1 volt to conduct. Its a strange pattern that only when you were expecting a reading of greater than 1 volt you failed to get a reading.

+Mitch ah, thanks Mitch, that makes more sense. I think it may be time to invest in a better meter! Cheers for the feedback :-)

Hey Andy,I am only a hack lets get that clear. Do diodes store residual voltage,do they have to be plugged into the system first ?

Hi, I noticed that my GN’s battery is not charging. I replaced the old battery at about a 100 km ago the old one with a new lithium one. I checked the charge coming out of the rectifier end and get a few millivolts. I checked the current and resistance on the regulator rectifier and it does work according to specs. I checked the rectifier itself, resistance between coils = 0.5 Ohms , within specs. No Short to body. Started the bike, rev up to 5000 rpm, multimeter on AC current shows 0.5 volts on each coil of the rectifier - no good. I checked the wires and connectors - All OK. Any suggestions ?

Hi Possibly a defective flywheel - if magnet field strength diminished then won't induce a voltage into the stator. if stator checks out okay then most likely faulty reg/rec unit Hope this helps Cheers Andy

How much different are the readings for a 1988 GN250?

Hey Andy, what was the original issue with this bike? I am currently having an issue with my gz250. The battery keeps draining and won’t recharge when I rev up the bike. When I jump start my bike I’ll get it up to about 12.8v, then it will slowly drop to 11.80 after the jumper cables are removed and the bike will die. I was going to replace the stator, but do you think this could be my issue as well? Maybe I could just do the same as you here with the rectifier? I just replaced the battery and it shouldn’t be the issue. I’d be grateful if you’d get back to me and let me know what you think. Thanks man.

Hi Matthew, you most definitely have a charging fault. You'll need to test the output of the stator - I have videos on the GN250 doing this very check. If the stator checks out good then it will be the Reg/Rectifier unit that will need replacing Like you said, this is not a battery problem Cheers Andy

Andy Mechanic thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I appreciate it a lot, I’ll test out the stator first then. Thanks bud.

It’s the stator, thanks for the help Andy. Hopefully I can get this little thing fixed while there is still some decent weather left in the season for me to ride it. Thanks again. I subscribed to your channel. Much appreciated.
