If you want a competent 4x4 but you are on a budget then don't miss the Suzuki Grand Vitara. The styling is handsome and it's good to drive, while the interior is well put together and as attractive as the exterior. Unlike many similarly sized 4x4s, the Grand Vitara possesses some genuine off-road ability, so it can cut it in the rough stuff. The downsides are that it lacks refinement and the petrol engines are very thirsty.

I bought a mint conditioned Suzuki Grand Vitara, one month ago, in the exact same color and model year as this, but mine is 2.0 auto. Done alot of mods to it, mounted bonnet guard, wind deflectors, mud flaps, 3 x 60 watt xenon aux light, 2 inch lift springs/shocks, camber adjusting bolts, Asfir 4x4 alloy bash plate, bigger 245/65/17 Yokohama Geolander AT on 8 x 17 black alloys, and mounted same big wheel on the back door, as a spare wheel, full anti corrosion treatment inside all doors, door sills, bonnet, inside wheel arches, bonnet and whole underside of the car. Were happy with the car. Cheers from me in Norway

@@Usaamaaaaah Hi I have lifted the car 50 mm and also mounted bigger wheels on, those two combined are not great for fuel consumption. But have many other cars to use so fuel consumption dosent bother me too much. It likes some petrol, being a small jeep with permanent four wheel drive😃👍. Should also mention that the petrol version is the one to go for, no timing belt to worry about, , its chain driven. The 1.9 ltr Renault turbo diesel on the other hand, is not the most reliable engine out there...🤔🤔

Pretty nice review of a solid vehicle. I have a Grand Vitara and have been nothing but pleased by it. Really good seats, quality ride, handles well for me, and has nice cargo room. Looks good as well, far as I'm concerned (not that such is even my main priority.) I like the rear fridge style door too. It's nice not getting clunked in the head by a liftgate anymore. It's a real strong vehicle with an eye toward functionality.

I would think it's one of the most reliable 4x4s around today, they do a petrol two litre version that's got good mpg and plenty of power as it's got sixteen valves and variable cam timing with a clever self adjusting inlet manifold, there just so much better made than a range rover and do twice as many miles to the gallon.

you're not wrong. the best I ever got my 1.9 DDIS was 6.8L per 100km which works out to be something like 34MPG. That was a 2.5hr drive on the highway after a full service and topped up up tires. I still think it's fairly good though.

In her first review on the Renault Twingo, I wrote that she needed to do the rear passenger test, glovebox, side door bin and so on like Matt does. I think she is doing a big improvement on that! Very good review compared to your first Rebacca! But now you need to tell us which other cars we can buy instead -> Like Matt does. Like VW polo instead of Ford fiesta and so on. And make a bit more fun and jokes -> Like Matt does

I bought a black 2.4 auto a month ago, cannot praise it enough, I love it. I've driven BMW's for years, so was nervous about going Japanese but hired an SZ5 on holiday in the Caribbean; it was brilliant. Big enough but not too big (big SUV's are for chavs!). It's solid, faster than I expected, comfortable at 90mph, superb leather seats, cruise, keyless entry. I bought the model with no spare wheel, for less than £20k, a bargain. Can't wait for winter.

2008 2.7L V6 4x4 grand vitara in Canada. I have the car since day 1, and I love it, it handles very well, no issues, reliable in our -40C winter. And I do not feel it's under powered. Gas mileage is average, but you might see the gas meter go down fast, because this thing has a very small gas tank for a suv....

It's a compact SUV. Many/most from that sub class aren't geared toward seating a half dozen people plus. If someone wants that, they need to step up in size. For couples, even those with one or two children who still want to haul groceries, active things, and such, something of this size is usually fine.

My parents have a lower spec 2WD model(I wasn't involved in the decision to buy a 2WD body on frame SUV for commuting around central florida). I do echo most of your sentiments. The 2.4 gets around mid-20s with me driving like an octogenarian, the way it sounded at low speeds was my problem with it. It's like...a V6 breathing through a kazoo. Oh and the speed sensitive audio system is pretty slow to react.

US market (not American, 'cause America is a huge continent), usually goes by petrol instead of Diesel, because petrol engines are cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain. Diesel parts and services are way more expensive than servicing a petrol engine. Also, the Diesel quality here in America (as continent) is lower than in Europe, and many Diesel engines in this type of cars ends up requiring services more often. The Diesel is used on heavy equipment or transport, and some SUVs and trucks.

honestly, if you have the option then stick to the 2.7 or 3.2 v6. the 2.4 between 05-12 are prone for cracked heads/blocks and the diesel is the same. after 12(or maybe 14) they fixed the issue with the 2.4's. the 3.2 engine is also paired with the 5spd auto and only available in the top end prestige option so you get all the extras. mine is the 3.2 prestige and at just over 320,000kms and still running flawlessly. tows like a train too.

The Vitara is good, but it was really good few years ago. The problem with the Vitara is that it is getting old, the engines are old and the interior design is getting old as well. That car requires a good redesign, making sure to keep its Compact True Off Roader soul and improve the mechanic and technology. BTW, those blackish/gray careyish trim insertions in the dashboard look cheap and doesnt match the car style.

Luxury SUV it isn't, but it is extremely rugged, and you would be surprised just how much it can handle in the rough terrain departement. There is no direct rival to it because of this, not even the RAV
